Small correction : the sample I received is an early prototype of the amber flare version and it looked like silver. Right now Blazar only plan to release Remus amber and blue flare version.
@@matthiasdeo Oh! Thanks for the reply! So the amber set you own more or less adopts the color of the light source? Without being overly amber-colored?
Is it me or do these lenses have a "higher than usual" amount of distortion at the edges. The 100mm was the least obvious but the other 2 really to me felt like everything but dead center was very distorted. The bokeh is not all that soft as well, but as a cinematic vibe it's really excellent. It may just be me but I felt like the Sirui did better when it comes to distortion.
IMO, the Sirui is too light on character… and once stopped down they might as well be spherical. The Blazar is much closer to what I want from an anamorphic… and the price!
This is typical for anamorphics not cropped to an aspect ratio you’re used to seeing. Crop off the sides to 2.39 and some of that distortion goes away. Use the extreme left and right edges of a Cooke anamorphic on full frame and you’ll see the same thing.
Dude, nice video, thanks. I do find the bokeh shape a bit weird being cut off on on side making is not oval. Another question, what is that diopter adapter you're using. Looks really convenient, instead of putting on or off every single time.
Playing with the different lenses for the appropriate artistic expression gives the mood in a story depth and touches us. Your videos are always exciting, not least because of your beautiful model.
Silver flare is not available on their site. Using the Meike PL to E or EF to E with VND/ND/and many more filters gonna be amazing as well! Well priced but not a fan of the 1.5x factor for non-open gate sensors like Sony. It should be great for cameras with open-gate or if you wanna use that extra width for reframing in a cinema standard ratio.
Great work, love the angles, subject and light. Really excellent looking results, very cinematic indeed. For a lightweight rig, these seem like a solid choice. That last extra squeezed clip is oozing character for sure, though losing the practicality somewhat!
Beautiful work, thank you Mathieu. These seem an absolute steal for the price, I'm waiting with bated breath for mine to arrive... The 65 in particular looks gorgeous. Its barrel distortion seems more pronounced than the 100 in particular. I might try adding some in post for the 100, but let's see. Hoping the short focus throw is useable, nailing focus on anamorphic T2 can't be a walk in the park ;-) Thanks again for these beautiful examples 👍
That’s barrel distortion. And these have some really weird strong barrel distortion Some are more noticeable than others. The good ones have a natural pleasing barrel distortion. The cheap ones have bad barrel distortion like this.
To me all look soft, compared to modern lenses. The CA on the 45mm seems to be quite heavy and the edges don't look good at all. I am also not fan of the strong horizotal lens flare line. So I'm not very excited about this. Maybe someone who wants a more vintage look will appreciate it.
They look really good to me. Is the 100mm stretching faces horizontally, or is that too desqueezed? I think these lenses have a better looking result than previous ones Ive seen that have less characteristics. I really like the black and metallic silver color on these. Hope they bring a 2x
I’ve been following these lenses since the development announcement awhile back. I ordered a set today. Can’t wait. But I’m curious… there is no silver flare version.
The images with those lenses are very nice for sure. But I must say you must consider the photographer and the use of light. Your model also enhances these image, if I may say. I'm assuming you used the Sony a7 IV for this right? THe crispnes of the camera and the softness of these lenses are a very good combo. I agree with one of the commentators, the chrome. ab. is a bit much, but it only shows in strong light and out of focus, which I don't mind. The slight vignette and edge focus blur help focus the eye to center of the image. The triangle bokeh is interesting. The price point? Outstanding. A good special use lens.

Great review as always! But the lenses are really terrible... that loca and hideous bokeh defeat the purpose of using anamorphic lenses for aesthetics. It just makes the image look cheap, even more than 2x projection adapters, which at least match the old-school cinematic look, even when backfocused. Chromatic aberration is even worse than the vintage glass, can hardly believe it was made that way on purpose... more like poor optical design.
I just ordered the 65mm "Blue" with EF mount. Could you tell which EF to Sony E converter are you using? I wouldn't want to make a mistake when buying one. Thank you!

were you shooting these wide open? look like you stopped down a little bit
Most ppl don't shoot wide open.. it's not practical
Find the 65 has a nice look. Which was your favorite? Did you have to shim the mount to achieve good focus?
I didn't touch the mount, but I tested 2 different adapters from EF to E mount and the Fotodiox was the better choice
I just can't with these aspect ratios wider than 2.4, even in test videos. Wish I could see them cropped to that more standard format.

Shot on A7III, maybe I will get the FX3 for Xmas :)
Maybe it's a total amateur question but why does there appear to be so much distortion on the 45mm?
because it starts to be really wide for an anamorphic lens
The lens provides very shallow depth of field which creates the blurry background effect. It's the same as portrait mode on iphone.
We are entering an interesting era for affordable and agile cinema. I want this set for christmas 🎄🎁
