It's interesting you posted this video near New Year's Eve because it has connections to winter. Here's what's been told in my village. The original tale is said to have started during the 60s, when Japanese society was drastically changing. It is said that one man who was inspired by Western Films put on a red cape (aka Manto) for fun, but was ridiculed by the village and isolated. Soon this escalated into the village people bullying the man by painting stuff that he owned red like laundry drying outside or his door. After years of torment, eventually the man snapped and vowed revenge. Around New Year's Eve, he went around sneaking around midnight ithe winter solace to put red strokes of paint on the windows of the villager's homes. The next morning after the villager's woke up, they were surprised to see red paint on their window, but changed into fear when they noticed it was blood. The villager's rushed the the red cape man's house, where they found him hanging himself, with a pool of blood under him from what it seems like slits on his wrist. From that day onwards, it is said in my village that if the winter night is a little too quiet, you must not look or even think of anything red, or else the man comes back for vengeance. Typically, red and white are celebratory color combinations for New Year's in Japan, but my village does it without red unlike how most of what I wrote is a big red lie. Just thought it was a cool timing you posted this!
