Well colorado can get down to -30 on a good day. Now if you get a freeze it will be worse. MN was like that when I live there. So winter pads I would run in your area Exped-8 Then the exped thermrest to go under that. Under that the gossomagear. Then I would use your sleeping bag. Thats a 3 layer pad system 1 it protects the main pad and provides more insulation. WOW goto the exped site right now you can get the r8 for $125.00 and wide and that's a steal. You can go down to -40 °C / -40 °F with just the exped8 now combine the thermarest and you get 2 more for r rating so now your good to -45 and you protect the main mat. Add the gossamer gear pad and now they are prevented from sleeping. Those other 2 pads are cheap. That would be your perfect setup. I run the thermest r7 which is like 10 degrees less but I am in TN. :) You take this pad and put it with your bag you will never be cold. PAD video it will help you

When you sleep in a bag the insulation under you does nothing because your laying on it. So the western bag you are carrying more weight for no reason. A camp pad is more important then the western bag. I have a video explaining pads just search my channel for it. So a proper pad for the weather and a quilt will do more for you. Summer I run 1 quilt in winter I run the same quilt and another. So 2 pounds in quilts and 1 pound in quilt I am in 3lbs.
You are correct about not compressing your feather bags. I hang mine. My tent is a dn durston tent you might want to check out.

I'll check it out. The pad I use had limits around 32 degrees. The bag is 15, so the weakness is that pad. When I go to Colorado, I use a foam pad, and then I place my camo on top of the foam pad for extra cushion and some warmth. I'll check out what you're doing. I'll try anything to have less weight
