- Today we find about what kind of churches Lemkos and Rusnaks traditionally belong to in America.

Please note:
1) Orthodox Church in America, not Orthodox Church of America
2) Although the word "Russian" is used in the name American Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Diocese, the word Руська (Rus'ka - Ruthenian) is used in the Lemko subtitles.
3) Where you see the words "Greek Catholic", "Roman Catholic" and "Byzantine Catholic" in capital letters in the Lemko subtitles, that refers to diocese and not individual parishes.

Thanks so much for this video!! It was very helpful in understanding some of my family history. On my dad's side, they came from the Lemko Region (present day Poland), attended a Ukrainian Catholic Church and identified as Ukrainian. On my mom's side, they came from the Sub Carpathian Region (present day Ukraine), attended a Byzantine Catholic Church and identified as Slovak or Hungarian. Both sides from Carpathian Mountain area but different churches.

You also forgot to include both ROCOR and Moscow Patriarchate.
St John Russian Orthodox Cathedral in Mayfield PA is ROCOR and has Rusyn roots. The former Metropolitan of ROCOR, Metropolitan Laurus, is Rusyn and was born in modern-day Slovakia.
The church you mentioned, St Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox cathedral in Passaic NJ, is under the Moscow Patriarchate.

@@theamericanlemko6537 After the Bolshevik Revolution, the Russian Orthodox Church in America was divided into three groups. These groups are OCA, ROCOR, and Moscow Patriarchate.

This was a great video. My grandparents came from the Lemko region of Poland. They did not consider themselves Ukrainian or Polish. The word Lemko derives from the word lem (Rusyn: лем, lit. 'only'). In the aftermath of WWII, Lemko finally supplanted Rusyn and Rusnak as the term of choice for the Rusyns on the north face of the Carpathians in Poland. We belonged to the Byzantine Greek Catholic Eparchy of Passaic. My maternal grandfather said he was born a Catholic & he will die a Catholic. My relatives belong to the two Byzantine Catholic jurisdictions (Ruthenian & Ukrainian.) Three Orthodox jurisdictions, OCA, Ukrainian, & Carpatho-Rusyn. We all went to each other's churches. I knew one old Orthodox priest that used to host a Pinochle Card Game every Thursday night & use to have various priests from all the jurisdictions over. They ignored the rancor held by church authorities and would say we are here to serve the people & not the politics.

This was so helpful for me and cleared up some things that have puzzled me for years. My (Lemko) father was second generation. He was baptized in the Greek Catholic Church and also received First Communion there. His parents eventually converted to Russian Orthodox in the 1930s. When my Dad married my Roman Catholic mother in 1953 he had to "convert" because he had been Greek Catholic. I makes much more sense now. Thank you.

Russians came from Galicia..... How did you get this one? Not Russians but Rusyns came from Galicia. Russians are Muscovites and Rusyns from Galicia (Галичина) to distinguish themselves from Muscovites started to call themselves Ukrainians around early 1900s. Muscovy switched to call itself Russia in 1721. What struck me the most that today's Rusyns in America call themselves and their churches Russian, abandoned their native tongue around 1950s and even keep portraits of Muscovite czars. Holy cow!

Another outstanding documentary here on Lemko and Rusyn heritage and background. Are there any Orthodox prayer books, service books or Bibles in the Lemko language in print or even online that you know of? I found Богослужебноє Євангеліє по-русинськы on a Ukrainian Orthodox website, but nothing in the Lemko language unfortunately.
I really appreciate the manner in which you subtitle your videos so that I can read the Lemko text and hopefully pick up a little of your forefather's language.

I personally don't know of any Orthodox prayer books, service books or Bibles in Lemko, and general rule of thumb is that Lemkos (along with Rusyns from Slovakia and Ukraine) traditionally used Church Slavonic rather than the vernacular. But then again I actually never made an attempt to look for religious texts in Lemko, so it's possible that they do exist
You may want to check with the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Passaic. I know they used to have various prayerbooks in Cyrillic & Western Alphabet versions, but that was back in the 1970s. The use of the old language is rare because the immigrants that spoke it have passed away. The custom of both Orthodox & byzantine Catholic Churches is always to have prayers & services in the people's language. Since 98% of the people speak English. The Curches do not want to promote nationalism.
Hello all these people are Ukrainian not Rusyn if you remember the first settlers, they were pioneers. They didn't have any organisation so the first that came were indoctarison by Russian Orthodoxy and your language is cross between Old Slav and Polish I've heard you say something in Rusyn and it was Polish. After 1947 over 305 Ukrainian Insurgent army Veterans entered the USA one Ivan Dymtryk in his book the UPA had to educate the locals of being Ukrainian.
