You forgot to discuss Comte's most important contribution: logical positivism.

He almost had something going, but I thinkthe practice of venerating a random lady that Comte was infatuated with made it a bit weird. Encorporating useful, pragmatic, and productive ideals from various religions is a very promising idea, though.

Whenether somebody tells you to stop asking questions, there is always something wrong.
cult is a group of people that don't ask questions.
also cult doesn't have to be religious. Cult becomes when people stop thinking and blindly follow doctrines.
nationalism is also a cult that led to WW II.

Music, according to Auguste Compte, is the most social in all art forms.
Actualy, the influence in Brazil wasn't just in churches and social groups. The ideas of Comte inspired the military to take down the Brazilian Empire in a coup and forming the United States of Brazil.

When I was a teenager I didn't have internet, so I would go to the public library and read the classics. His work was so strange that I never forgot it. I was also an atheist, but to me it seemed to stupid to make an atheist religion. Then he was mention in university when I studied, but he was just dismissed as a "positivist". He wrote indeed a lot about positivism, which was anti-revolutionary, since France saw the violence and stupidity that happens in revolutions. As such, he was just dismissed by Marxists when I was in college. But his work is indeed the work of a madman. Just kidding, I know a person with schizophrenia and I know they are not eccentrics, they just go through phases of mental instability. He also, when talking about positivism, wrote the phrase "order and progress", which is written on the flag of my country, Brazil. I didn't expect it to be mentioned in the video, never knew he had influence here.

When you mentioned the calendar and honouring certain things on specific days and months etc. I was reminded of the book 'We' by Yevgeny Zamyatin, where the society us run solely off a 'Table of Hours'. Could you do a video on him as part of your LITERATURE series? It's an amazing book and he was an amazing 'Soviet heretic', and the book itself is very reminiscent of Comte's beliefs. The society he builds in 'We' has abandoned religion and focuses heavily on people, society and 'the now.'
This is surreal. I go to a Unitarian Universalist church which has a very wide gathering of beliefs promising to treat each other well, and help each other where we can. There is a large number of members who hold these ideas very dearly.
It is very nice to see some of the history of a line of thinking that is so much a part of my religious life.
Thank you for resuscitating Comte once again and for this clear depiction of his life and vision.
The religion was so important for Brazil that we still carry the words "order and progress" in our national flag.

wow, i was surprised watching this video by the mention of my city, Curitiba. All of these thinkers seem to be so far away but it's crazy how they actually manifest in our ordinary everyday lives.
As a pantheist, I've always wondered about the possibility of a secular religion. I'm so glad to see that someone already has established this. The idea is very appealing.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with this system. Perhaps I'm just eccentric. I can't imagine NOT supporting its development.
Most of the people hold very close and personal onto their religion. Comte was rejected for the same reason as Freud was; To most people, idea that all boys want to have sex with their mother is equally absurd to the idea of a religion without God.

+The Napoleonist I'd suggest that schools already do a pretty good job of that -- the "great men and their accomplishments" model of history classes. SoL's stated aim is to draw attention to ideas that can make life better, if we understand them. I'm not saying it's a bad thing to want to learn about Bonaparte and Caesar, just that SoL's charter is a little different.

Why is it that most "great men" are cut from the same cloth as Thrasymachus' great men? Butchers of humanity, liars, thieves, and adulterers? Makes one wonder if we have been defining great wrong all these years.
No wonder our culture and societies are so messed up, with these "great men" as our inspirations. Perhaps a better way would be to follow the leads of men who were peaceful, moral, loving, faithful and truth tellers? You know... like Jesus?

I've lived the life of a monastic-secular, similar to a monk for Humanism, but of other developments & views for 9 years now. It takes great ideas from; Comte, St. Benedict, Saint-Simon, Spinoza, Emerson, Nietzsche, Gracian, with many & more of the great Exemplars of Humanity you (The School of Life) so brilliantly explore in your video-essays & curriculum series/studies. Until about 2 years ago, I had thought I was the only one (or 1 of a very small number of people) who thought in these ways, aside from the very rare & few authors, philosophers & great minds from the past -- & then I found, The School of Life. It has exponentially & immensely increased my thirst & absolute need for continuing the endeavors of Humanity & the Art(s) of Worldly Wisdom. However, it is almost disturbing in a way that for all these years I had felt alone in my one & only pursuit, yet now, the entire world opens up with possibility and similar tastes. I am finding chapters of Buddhist temples in Texas & Humanist Associations online; Places like Zeitgeist, Ted(X), Project Lantern, Project Reason, The Khan Academy; People like Greg M. Epstein, Jason Silva, Sam Harris, A.C. Grayling, & yes, Botton himself -- & yet, I feel that there is still more to do... oh, so much more. I do feel extremely fulfilled in my efforts & works towards many of my goals & have no need to have any capitalist, social, status or selfish gains from any of it, just that it is a very fruitful experience to study & know any & all subjects known to man & learning it all from the brightest men & women Humanity has to offer. Now, that all being said, I have yet to find any organization meeting this specific criteria, though many have come very, very close. I applaud & have the utmost respect for people like, Botton, Grayling, Khan, Lao Tzu, Spinoza, Woolf, Dickens, Maslow, Einstein, DeFranco, etc. & so on; They are the Great Movers & Shakers of the Movers & Shakers. Now, is there anyway we can assemble "All This" with the intent to go further down the rabbit hole?? Is this already trying to become a "Thing", with The School of Life, Humanism, Secularism, Positivism, or even; Religion, Government, Military, Business & Societal paradigms already?? Was "All This" trying to be fully described (with great effort) by Einstein on his deathbed, in his dwindling years?? Or, by Gustave Caillebotte in his introspectively beautiful works on canvas?? Or, maybe Baltasar Gracian with his "Art of Worldly Wisdom", or the english translator, Martin Fischer who wanted to spellbind the english reading world with another man's collection of trivium gems through his aphorisms?? Or, how about Noam Chomsky & his decades of neglected intellectualism that are just now being widely accepted, as opposed to his "radical years" where in fact, his opinions & foresight have not wavered a bit since. These may be stretches, however, there are certain supplements to the cause I wish to eventually be addressed by some great Person. Why we're not more "openly" searching for these Persons and collectively assembling their aptitudes for solving "ALL" Humanly & Worldly Plights, not just some, few or less, is beyond me. We'd like to think that we are, but I truly believe that we are not. Our brightest minds are being auctioned off to the highest bidders in business, privatized & government programs that are, for lack of better terms, redundant or non-effective in the long run -- or worse yet, digressive or degrading to societal, national & global affairs, or just down-right in it for money or attention in some way. That's just 1 of many, many examples of "old metaphors running amuck", that are being blatantly played out before us everyday, and yet we still do very little about it. If you have honestly read this much of my blabbering, then you may sense a bit of hostility or negative views towards humanity by this very author, but I assure you, that is not the case. Though my texts here may appear to be ungrateful to the comforts afforded me by what Human Progress has already offered, or even unsatisfied with the works of The School of Life or the great ideas, men & women they so lovingly, and therapeutically teach, I am genuinely & mostly content with the current states of things. It is for the future generations & beyond that my urgency may seem more lively in this passage, or perhaps my lack of findings in souls of similar tastes out there/here -- No matter. I'll continue my path & wish the same for you all, however, if you have come this far with my words, then maybe you can sense me.... I want you to know that I Love You & I wish nothing but fulfillment for you. If you have any insight on how to live a "full-time" life attempting to contribute to the collective knowledge & wisdom of Humanity, please, do not hesitate to help out by commenting/linking something even remotely resembling these features. We can "umbrella" all this. I believe it's trying to be done -- it just needs more work & more people trying to "know & improve". Much Respect & Much Love

There's plenty of cynical films . George Orwell damned all Marxism as leading to Stalinism from his terrible experiences in Spain where he contacted TB,and was shot in the neck.
He joined the Partei Obrera Unification Marxismo,POUM which the Stalinists accused of being Trotskyist which Trotsky denied Stalin's game was to wipe out all revolutionary groups and bring the Spanish Bourgeois to an agreement with the Republicans. It didn't work but the Spanish GPU killed all revolutionaries.
Odd his prediction came true with electronic Capitalism!
Auguste Comte was tremendously influential in the Brazilian Armed Forces and I believe the moto "Order and Progress" that our flag bears is inspired by Comte.

The work of Comte is very interesting : he admits that science and modern technology have answered scientifically to problems that religions gave an unsatisfying answer but he admitted that religions were able to gather humans together through a community able to live on according to rules, laws, traditions, strong believes.
Funny how he was considered quite mad yet he was so sane regarding religion. All religion is so divisive. .
Positivism was so influential in the Brazilian cultural elite in the late XIX century that the phrase in the national flag "Ordem e Prgresso" (Order and progress) comes from Comte's phrase:
"Love as a principle, the order as a foundation, and progress as a goal"
Now, School of Life, it is time you revive this religion.
From Comte through Lewes to George Eliot, and through her arises one of the most incisive and kindly forms of literature.

I've noticed that there is no recognition for African philosophy or literature on this channel. But it is there, and not just art for art's sake. Check out the works of Okot Bitek, Chinua Achebe and Ngugi wa Thiongo. You will not be disappointed.
I am a unapologetic atheist but I when my city was destroyed by a EF5 tornado I noticed it was church groups showing up from all around America that showed up just to help people and that got me thinking if atheist groups would do that they would improve are reputations

Another example of why it is best that we build on our western religion, Christianity. A lot of the heavy lifting has already been done, to create a religion from scratch with the reach and power of Christianity would take another 1000 years. Build on what you have and reform it slowly.
I agree. The bedrock of western culture comes from Christianity. We should have an appreciation for it's impact on society and not be so eager to dismiss the past 2000 years of our history. Religious or not we all have a responsibility to fight for the ideals of western society.

This video should be watched in tandem with the one on Edmund Burke, even though Burke is under "philosophy" in Curriculum Part 2. Burke's ideas about "the sublime" are very similar to Comte's about what belongs in a church of humanism.
