    Carl, really a brilliant critique and analysis. To those of us who believe Jimmy Page was the best, you prove the point with every video. He was the master of the guitar symphony...there might be faster, more technically proficient players out there, but none of them have Page's command of the melodic progression, his instincts and pure taste...every song is a guitar journey to be cherished....there are lines within lines that could fuel entire songs. There are great players out there, and there is Page.

      Beautifully said. 100% agree. I knew Page was different when I first heard Zeppelin at age 14, in the mid/late 80's.
      His style, sound and placement of notes put him above anyone else, IMO

    • @manictree5436
      @manictree5436 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Why the need for the slightly negative speed/technical comparison? If that's where you insist on going, Page is in a league by himself with his IMPROVISED, inventive, incredibly emotional, rhythmic, FAST, and TECHNICAL playing on the live version of "Dazed and Confused" from "The Song Remains the Same" film for example.

    • @miketan3398
      @miketan3398 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @manic tree5 It was not a negative comparison in any way. It was an acknowledgment that Jimmy Page was/is not the fastest, most technical player in rock, and that the overall evaluation of greatness must focus on much more than the superficial.....and Page embodied those more expansive attributes, and stands alone as the best.

    • @j_freed
      @j_freed 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jimmy wasn’t about being technical, he only cared how interesting he sounded to the listener. He would do weird unorthodox things.
      This is exactly why EVH is great and people that imitate him are boring. He only ever played what to him sounded exciting and fun. And same thing with Pete Townsend from the who, he played really simple things that still sounded so interesting.

    Jimmy Page's solo on "Since I've Been Loving You," is one of the greatest solos ever in the blues field. Since he was a studio musician for so many years he understood how to put tracks together to form a whole. That's a hard thing to do. There are other guitar solos in other genres like jazz and pop but as far as the blues goes, this is one of the greatest songs ever written. Jimmy could also win an award for all of his acoustic solo work with Zepp. Jimmy is a big fan of original blues. But "The Ocean" is wonderful.

    I'd like to add "I'm Gonna Crawl" solo, the last song from "In Through The Out Door". It is a very emotional tune because of incredible Robert Plant's vocal range and Jimmy Page's guitar tune. This song really have such a unique feeling of the last song they ever recorded together with Bonham. Like this is the end of their path. So I always feel myself encouraged when I hear this solo.

On a very Tele dominated album (Strat on "In The Evening"), he busts in on "I'm Gonna Crawl" with that wonderful Les Paul + Marshall tone (very reminiscent of "Presence"), and seems to match the bittersweet lyrics/vocal performance by Plant with an evocative, emotional poem of a solo there--WAY underrated!

    Achilles is the greates single Page lick he's ever performed and his chops are legendary.
    The solo is epic and mesmerizing with it's blues rhythm riffs and speed metal leads.
    Along with Bonham's crushing double base and tom tom pounding and cymbals assault topped off by speedy rounds of machine gun drumming makes this the single most epic song in a history of epic legendary music.
    Definitely my favorite and they're all my favorite.
    I was fortunate to see Zep perform at numerous shows in the 70s when their shows were 4 hours long along with Bonham's half hour drum solos in the middle of their sets.
    I still vividly remember their tour where they included a 1 hour acoustical set and how so many people were upset about it and freaking out and now 50 years later it's obtained legendary notoriety while recieving historical acclaim.

      Guys, highly recommend: April 27, 1969 at Fillmore West (just filthy, dirty early Zep power blues), Blueberry Hill (LA Forum, 1970 - I forget the month), Osaka and Orlando 1971 (I think this is Page’s all around peak for psychedelic blues rock - blistering work by the whole band - my personal favorite period), HTWWW (but I think Kevin Shirley’s production of JP’s leads are kind of dry), and best recordings from 1973 Europe (Vienna, Hamburg, Munich, Offenburg, Essen - just crazy, wild interplay between Page and Bonham - Page’s peak “shredding” era - Plant’s voice now permanently shot though). Of course there’s tons of cool stuff later but I think Page’s overall chops peaked in 1973. I think rock and roll caught up to him in 1975 and beyond (but wow, In My Time of Dying at Earl’s Court is something to behold). Please point me to any great 1977 recordings.

    This has always been one of those sneaky little guitar interludes that has always knocked my socks off! I have always felt that nearly orgasmic feeling that Plant exclaims about at that very point. It is one of the juiciest, most electrifying phrases I’ve ever heard in any piece of music. The fact that it occurs almost as the song is playing out seems to leave you just craving more! I’ve played this part of the song over and over trying to recapture the magic of that musical moment again and again but it’s hard to figure out where to best start the record over to get the full effect because it’s so perfectly woven into the overall composition. I have never heard it analyzed before and you do it so wonderfully here. It’s like the sun bursting out at the top of a mountain after an extra beautiful and thrilling hike. It truly is a masterful piece of composition that sings out and places you somewhere you rarely get to go, it gives you a feeling, a thrill that makes trudging through hours of mediocre music worth all the trouble. It’s the kind of moment that I’m always looking for but only rarely experiencing. Your tutorial is fantastic and really pulls back the curtain on the magic being produced but you do it in a way that’s clean and not tedious but allows you to still experience the joy of the music. A truly fantastic job of analyzing and explaining a deceptively simple sounding solo. A hardy thanks!!!

    Fantastic analysis, Carl! You have quickly become my favorite content creator on TH-cam. Yes, you've picked my favorite band and guitarist as your main subject matter, but my appreciation goes much deeper, as does your analysis. I'm a guitar player, and like you, have enjoyed and studied Jimmy Page for 50 years. But your work, from the composition perspective first, while also calling out the technique and theory, are unmatched in any analysis I've ever seen. Long winded way to say your work rocks, and I hope you keep on doing these. Thank you.

    Thanks for that breakdown Carl. Always perfectly communicated lessons. For me the second is the key to what’s uniquely creative about “The Ocean.” As a teen when released, it became ubiquitous so quickly that most of us were tired of hearing it. Add to that, there were so many amazing Page compositions, that one could easily move off of one to another. Looking back, most of us never appreciated “the embarrassment of riches,” Zeppelin and others gave us, until it was gone. Thanks for keeping great music alive. Regards

    The Ocean is one of those songs I've heard a thousand times, but with the layers of overdubs, and Page's studio magic, I always feel like I hear new things going on. As a guitarists who just loves zeppelin. I was introduced to page in high school. In the evening was the first zeppelin song I ever heard. I play by ear and would introduce a track into software that slows down the pitch but keeps the tempo and would just dive in and drown in his playing. To this day it's zeppelin all the way. You are a breath of fresh air. Thank you for your love of pages music.

    Great vid! I've always loved the major pentatonic/major blues solos with the really expressive "happy" bends. I'm a huge Page fan. I spent more time playing along with the zep 10 disc box set than in class and studying at university. Some of the greatest times.
    Watching this actually brought tears of joy to my eyes, remembering the feeling of being young and jammin to my favorite tunes with my friends.

    Just a fantastic analysis! I'm actually waist deep in BB bending at the moment. Always wanted to go back and upgrade my fledgling Blues playing, so it's the gift of 'The 3 Kings' for me: (BB, Freddie, and Albert). My ear is so much more diatonic and modal, so 'The Blues' is a real healthy challenge for me- sort of the opposite of most guitarists...

  • @sethtube13

    Thanks for posting this lesson. I like the way you reference Page's influence (BB King) in this solo, how he changes the phrasing and the 6th intervals related to Heartbreaker. I don't know any guitarist that uses repetition as effectively as Page does to create tension and release in a song. If you could post a video on this that would be great. I'm a guitarist also.
