Along with Cydalise et le Chevre-Pied, this short ballet is a favourite of the orchestral works by Pierne that I know. I particularly like the Divertissement section which had already existed as an independent composition before its incorporation into Images.
Rhythms and textures are playful and the orchestration is colorful. The harmony seems to range from late-Romantic (e.g. Chausson) to post-Romantic styles (e.g. Debussy). At times, it points to (or is similar to) harmonic styles in Stravinsky's neoclassical music from about the same time period (e.g. Apollon Musagète); also, it never seems to remain constantly at tension.
