Nice job guys. You are helping me break up some old thinking about bedding and wind direction and how bucks use it. Keep hammering that point home! I'll get it someday.
This series has been phenomenal! Love your work guys. I moved to a new state this year and want to use these principles to help me find new spots in my new home state of PA. Nice work.
really enjoying these mapping public land series. Ive recently started using OnX over huntstand and these videos have really helped with my aerial scouting. Patiently waiting for part 5.
OnX maps are quite outdated…and all of the layers are as well. You best use something else because you are hunting off of old data. Google maps is up to date. I canceled my onX subscription
Thank you so much for these teachings.I'm sure you hear this all the time but it's really changed the way that I hunt now I've been hunting for a long time and I long to be successful and now I feel I have a chance again I'm 63 years old and I'm out into the woods as often as I can ; 3 or 4 times a week. There was a moment in your hunting history where it all came together, where it crystallized, can you please tell me what did for you to put it all together, that one moment where you said" I got this"
Buck bedding. Dan Infalt, Greg Litzinger, Joe Elsinger, and several others proved to us that it worked. Then we tried it ourselves and saw great results.
Great stuff guys! Definitely helped me see how some of the puzzle pieces start to fit together! Felt like I was close and just missing a little something...really feel like its coming together now.
Dude, Ya'll are going to have dozens of guys hunting these bedding areas now that they all know where its at! nice to have a well thought through how to available like this though.
Informative and realistic. I don't know for sure of this location. But I think you just shot a nice buck there at the end of October (9 months) after the release of this video.
Here's what might be a dumb question. Let's say you kayak across to that spot at the end of the video and shoot a booner. How do you get him out of there? Do you strap him to your kayak and hope to not tip over while paddling back? Or is the plan to drag him over the hilltop back to that access road?
I’ve put a few deer on my kayak and paddled them out in the TN river. I have an Ascend 12 foot fishing kayak and it handles a field dressed deer fine but it’s not a very fun time.
I love you guys and this channel so much. You don’t happen to have a discord or IG where you help people evaluate land do you? I’d love to watch you go through a piece of property I hunt on onx with me so I can learn for myself.
Here in southern Louisiana when you turn on the topography nothing happens, we just live in a flat swamp. Not sure how to scout what looks like nothing but thick tree cover with no hills or valleys.
Great info.. But still feels overwhelming for a newbie... have you guys ever considered accessing requested public land and giving a couple of suggested areas to really look at. I purchased onX with your discount code. Thanks btw. I'm sure you guys kill it now your podcast and youtube have taken off but I would pay $ for your experience and suggestions just giving me 4 or 5 key places to hone in on in my general area and possible suggestions on accessing those points.
Im starting to think wind is such a crucial factor to finding these beds, how do you determine wind direction? Do you mostly assume prevailing wind from W to E? The examples you did showed a wind direction from N to S, just wondering if there is a wind map or something you are looking at. Awesome stuff! Can’t wait to learn more about locating buck bedding.
We just look at how a bed is situated and then decide what wind to hunt that bedding area based off that. For example, if the deer is facing south we will assume that he is bedding there on a north wind. That will also be the wind that we strategize to hunt that bedding area on.
Great videos. Quick question. If bucks normally are bedding on a side hill bench facing a east creek bottom on a westerly wind. Would they still bed there with a north or south wind? Thanks again.
I will be looking much more closely at topography this season than I ever have. We have always concentrated solely on food sources. Can't wait to get in the woods!
I'm going on a 5 day crossbow hunt next week. Will you give some advice. Gonna be at dale hallow state park in ky, I don't have on x and don't know how to read a topo map
I love yalls hunting videos but these videos like this are much needed. As i can see from the comments, yall are helping a lot of people, including me. Its also helping me to use the onx map and more understand what im looking at. Great info. Stay safe everybody
So I know this is an old video but down in Florida we got these things called alligators so you tell me if that deer will spend much time in that marsh...
in between the two branches of the stream, I see a high spot indicated by some trees where I assume there is marsh land tall thick stuff. there is a break in the water there in direct line with the hay fields. What is your opinion of looking for buck sign leading out of that low land headed toward the night time feed?
So with the first instance with a buck bedding on a ridge where should I be placed down in the bottom or off to either side of the ridge on a passing trail on either side of the bed?
That first area of buck bedding you found instead of finding the bucks bed wouldn't the easiest and best way not to bump him out of his bed would be just to find the trail he uses to get up that ridge to his bed and set up on that
Hunting public you guys have some great videos but you need a sign with your logo on it as a back drop for the podcasts. I have a small art business that makes signs out of recycled wood. Let me know if you would like me to make you one. It would look sweet!
I think you're show's are great ,they remind me how hunting was for me when I was young. I still think bow hunting is the best way to take a deer. I live in Michigan and always a challenge to take a decent buck. This year I've passed a couple of nice bucks because I've seen better on the trail cameras. I would like to meet you guys if you're still in Michigan . I know great public land spots. Love your shoe.
They will do both. Just really depends on how comfortable they feel in the bedding area. Most of the time though we find that they like to look down the river channel with the wind at their back.
If you guys can see trails from your online scouting maps (onX or google maps), but it’s close to access, do you still check it out? Or spend valuable time elsewhere?
When your watching a 4 year old scouting video and you start to realize your 4 years behind THP on stand Locations & all your summer scouting was just checking in for them. Lol 🤦♂️😂
If a spot looks promising from arials and while you have boots on the ground scouting, but you later find a stand. How do you use that information? Hunt it ifnit still looks good? Leave it due to pressure?
Ive been playing around with the free week long trial on the on x hunt app and its fricken awesome. Im definitely purchasing the service. Great video again guys. Thank you very much.
BowhuntingRoad yeah it’s really frustrating how they have totally high lighted an area just close enough to make videos on, but far enough away to make sure they aren’t giving up their own ground. Looks like all my public land is going to have many more new people in it from watching these vids.. really wish they would’ve just try to show examples without showing exactly where it’s at so it makes people actually go out and work.
We didn't go to these spots in an effort to hide areas closer to us. In order to show folks our thought process on new ground, we needed to find new ground. We've been on most of the public land close to Albia so every year we try to scout new areas. We would've taken the details off the maps but it wasn't possible.
I don't mean to be negative, I love what you guys are doing, so please do not take this as complaining. It's just a bit unnerving to see some of the places I have hunted on these videos. I'm not sure what impact that might eventually have.
so these public areas are on the mapping system already...do you really think a hunter that hunts public in that area doesn't know about this public land already? I dont see hunters flocking there all over a video...but thats just my opinion
When you are scouting, Are you scent free? Are you trying to keep your noise down, or talking normal? Thanks for the videos. great information, been very helpful!
How does the map in work when you're in like swampy areas the area I'm wanting to hunt is a river bottom / sunken land really want to know how you do raid the mapping in the swiper areas y'all are talking a lot about ridges on the flat land
Conservation Reserve Program. Fields that the government pays the land owner to not plant or harvest. They usually are covered with weeds and native vegetation.
Chanandler Bong as long as you are not making a habit of scouting an area over and over then it isn’t detrimental to the spot. We go in once then leave the area alone until we hunt there.
Do you guys ever take a look at someone's map for them to critique what they've done? I would love it if i could send you my scouting map and you could verify if I'm understanding correctly
Both 8x42 and 10x42. We'll use the 10x42's when we hunt open ground where we can see a long ways (marshes, CRP fields) and 8x42's in the woods. Thanks for watching!
Yes. A lot of times when the bedding area is trusted by one mature buck it is because the bedding location works. Once that buck dies then another is likely going to trust the same bedding area. Also, multiple mature bucks will rotate in and out of the same bedding area.
Yes we tried not to show the name of the areas but did not have that option. We had to decide whether the pros outweighed the cons before making the videos and concluded they did in this case.
You seriously just marked my tree at 6:15. Im not joking!!!! It's a good walk in and out, lots of racoon at night on the way out, they like to follow close behind. You're wrong on the wind also. If it's blowing from the northwest it will blow out on the northwest because it blows over the ridges and comes back up the ravine your in. The thing is to get in around 3:30-4am and wait until they come back from their nightly feeding from the East. That way your scent will be dissipated by 6-ish. Been there done that.
Pretty sure the code only works on their OnX Hunt App. It downloads to your phone and transfers all your data to their website. It also works like a GPS on your phone when you have no service.
We use several different ones. The majority of the ones that we have are pretty basic recreational kayaks. But we do have a sit on top fishing kayak that is very handy for carrying gear. That kayak is a 12 ft Jackson Cuda.
Scouting is tons of fun. Good job explaining this. You're a good teacher dude.
Nice job guys. You are helping me break up some old thinking about bedding and wind direction and how bucks use it. Keep hammering that point home! I'll get it someday.
Thanks for making these videos. I'm learning a lot.
This series has been phenomenal! Love your work guys. I moved to a new state this year and want to use these principles to help me find new spots in my new home state of PA. Nice work.
These videos have completely changed the way I hunt and scout.
This is a great video. I struggle to determine which bends are high and which are low. I spend more time trying to figure that out than anything
Awesome video. I'm hunting here in VA so most of this really pertains to my hunting strategy. Thanks 👍
Definitely a young man's game...canoes kayaks etc...better be a booner at the end of this effort!...hats off to you guys!
really enjoying these mapping public land series. Ive recently started using OnX over huntstand and these videos have really helped with my aerial scouting. Patiently waiting for part 5.

Buck bedding. Dan Infalt, Greg Litzinger, Joe Elsinger, and several others proved to us that it worked. Then we tried it ourselves and saw great results.
Thanks Fellers! Great viedos as always. I have a spot similar to the North end of the lake where it peters out in a swamp/marsh.
Great stuff guys! Definitely helped me see how some of the puzzle pieces start to fit together! Felt like I was close and just missing a little something...really feel like its coming together now.
Thank you for making all these awesome videos. I'm in Iowa and just starting to get into hunting. your videos have been helping me a lot.
Dude, Ya'll are going to have dozens of guys hunting these bedding areas now that they all know where its at! nice to have a well thought through how to available like this though.
Be doing some scouting and shooting next weekend. Hopefully I'll find a spot to build one of Ted Miller's horizontal rubs
Informative and realistic. I don't know for sure of this location. But I think you just shot a nice buck there at the end of October (9 months) after the release of this video.

Do you strap him to your kayak and hope to not tip over while paddling back? Or is the plan to drag him over the hilltop back to that access road?
I bring along an inflatable Barbie float. Put the deer on it and tie it to the back of the kayak. Gets some funny looks at the boat ramp.
I’ve put a few deer on my kayak and paddled them out in the TN river. I have an Ascend 12 foot fishing kayak and it handles a field dressed deer fine but it’s not a very fun time.
Great video and awesome work. Thanks for all the info you guys share with us, it means a lot.
Great job again and I can’t wait for the 5th episode to see your stand location picks! Now if I could only master the wind,
Really like your guys content yall do a really good job. Just a suggestion, I think you guys should do a segment on how to read a Topo map
I love you guys and this channel so much. You don’t happen to have a discord or IG where you help people evaluate land do you? I’d love to watch you go through a piece of property I hunt on onx with me so I can learn for myself.
I learned so much from this video, such as deer having access to GIS software and knowing where property lines are.
Here in southern Louisiana when you turn on the topography nothing happens, we just live in a flat swamp. Not sure how to scout what looks like nothing but thick tree cover with no hills or valleys.

Tremendous information, presentation with sharing screen and overall helpful video. You guys rock at putting this together.
Thank you for doing what you do. I'm a public land hunter and I've learned so much from you guys. Keep up the good work.

You guys are mentioning using a kayak to get in. If you get a deer how do you load It onto the kayak?
Joe Lizer we’ve loaded a few on the yaks and it works out alright.
"There's a white tail animal!!" He cracks me up 🤣🤣🤣
Great info to apply to my own area. Thanks!
I'm going on a 5 day crossbow hunt next week. Will you give some advice. Gonna be at dale hallow state park in ky, I don't have on x and don't know how to read a topo map

So I know this is an old video but down in Florida we got these things called alligators so you tell me if that deer will spend much time in that marsh...
Do you guys have any tips for escouting eastern turkeys?
in between the two branches of the stream, I see a high spot indicated by some trees where I assume there is marsh land tall thick stuff. there is a break in the water there in direct line with the hay fields. great content!
Definitely helping out a lot!!
Question on the topi view how many feet elevation between lines? Realize this not a real recent video. Thanks
That first area of buck bedding you found instead of finding the bucks bed wouldn't the easiest and best way not to bump him out of his bed would be just to find the trail he uses to get up that ridge to his bed and set up on that

Why not the oxbow a little north of your spots?
I think you're show's are great ,they remind me how hunting was for me when I was young. I still think bow hunting is the best way to take a deer. What Muddy climbing sticks do you guys use on the public land again?
Will bucks bed in an OX bow facing the creek/river with the wind at their back or face the land with wind in their face? Thanks!
They will do both. Just really depends on how comfortable they feel in the bedding area. Most of the time though we find that they like to look down the river channel with the wind at their back.

Haven't watched yet but I'm sure I'll enjoy it. Are any of THP guys headed to SD for the Sept 1 opener?
Ive been playing around with the free week long trial on the on x hunt app and its fricken awesome. Im definitely purchasing the service. Great video again guys. Thank you very much.
Sebastian Howard you should also check out the hunting beast , it's no nonsense real whitetail hunting as well without selling you any garbage.
Someone buy these guys a beer.
Does anyone else hit like before video even gets started?
Jason Brewton almost every time lol
Same!!!
Great video!
Man you are giving away locations of a lot of places I have bowhunted.
BowhuntingRoad yeah it’s really frustrating how they have totally high lighted an area just close enough to make videos on, but far enough away to make sure they aren’t giving up their own ground. Thanks. We usually don't see people move into a spot unless we show a really big deer or see a bunch of mature bucks out of the same stand.
How did you determine those "Area with likely hunting pressure"?
From what I could gather it was from the road access.
How would you do this for a bear hunt?
Hey guys i hear you refer to "CRP" pretty often. What does that stand for?
Conservation Reserve Program. Fields that the government pays the land owner to not plant or harvest. They usually are covered with weeds and native vegetation.
This is south of the state I live in Iowa I believe
Thanks!
What kayaks do y’all use?
So I'm having a hard time doing this. If I sent you the topo of a 67acher parasol I hunt could you help me learn how to read my area
What mapping software are you using?
Do you really need to worry about scent control when scouting near or in bedding areas?
Chanandler Bong as long as you are not making a habit of scouting an area over and over then it isn’t detrimental to the spot. We go in once then leave the area alone until we hunt there.
The Hunting Public thanks. Y’all give great advise and my dad and I love watching your vids!
Rick from memphis you cant hunt thare im allredy in there juut kidding good stuff as always out a here
Thanks
Do you guys ever take a look at someone's map for them to critique what they've done? I would love it if i could send you my scouting map and you could verify if I'm understanding correctly
Breath Of Fresh Bear! They do at a cost after the season email them or private fb message. At least they did last year
What is CRP?
Họw do u change to fall view
Did corndog get fired?
Awesome
What type of Vortex binos are you guys using?
Vipers and Diamondbacks
The Hunting Public 10x42?
Both 8x42 and 10x42. We'll use the 10x42's when we hunt open ground where we can see a long ways (marshes, CRP fields) and 8x42's in the woods. Thanks for watching!
Oh, and do you guys find that if a buck is killed in an area that another buck will come in and use the same bedding setups?
Yes. A lot of times when the bedding area is trusted by one mature buck it is because the bedding location works. Once that buck dies then another is likely going to trust the same bedding area. Also, multiple mature bucks will rotate in and out of the same bedding area.
Will we see Billy Bob's footprints in Part 5? Stay tuned ...
Thou shalt not show the name of any wma 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Yes we tried not to show the name of the areas but did not have that option. We had to decide whether the pros outweighed the cons before making the videos and concluded they did in this case.
One times not so bad because most people can’t draw Iowa just don’t do that in the southeast 😂
You seriously just marked my tree at 6:15. Im not joking!!!! It's a good walk in and out, lots of racoon at night on the way out, they like to follow close behind. You're wrong on the wind also. Hey. I just attempted to use THP discount code and onx said it was invalid. Did it expire already?!?
Chris Matthews no it should still work. Did you go to onxmaps.com to use it?
The Hunting Public Hi. Yep that’s the web site. I’m attempting to get the gps chip.
Pretty sure the code only works on their OnX Hunt App. It downloads to your phone and transfers all your data to their website. It also works like a GPS on your phone when you have no service.
Ok. Thank you
o downloaded the app on my p.ohome it never gave me an option for a promo code like you was talking about to 30 a year is that they charging me
It should have given you the option but you have to purchase it from their site at onxmaps.com
@@TheHuntingPublic guess it's not for the phone one dang
@ 4:19 How the heck did you measure that line so fast?
Haha! But seriously, how did you do that? I can only click the map and place a series of dots to create a line.
The action sped up in the video editing.
Sneaky - thought I was missing out on some onX functionality there. Nice job on this video series - very good info!
Garcia Sarah Perez Dorothy Brown Frank
What about the local landowners that also hunt the public land? That’s awful close to the house to be focused on that area.
Great video!!
What kayaks do y’all use?
We use several different ones. The majority of the ones that we have are pretty basic recreational kayaks. But we do have a sit on top fishing kayak that is very handy for carrying gear. That kayak is a 12 ft Jackson Cuda.
