Animal Collective is my favorite band of all time. Listening to AC throughout hs/college was one of the defining parts of my youth. Thank you for diving into this song and appreciating it. I know I'm a year late, but check out Panda Bear's individual works as well. He is one of the members behind those chants in the background but AC also has songs with him as the primary vocalist. He was featured on Daft Punk's song "Doin' It Right" a few years back. "Comfy in Nautica" is a beautiful song of his imo, but if you want to take a journey as a composer, check out "Bros". Bros is a long song, but about half way through it gets VERY interesting from a production standpoint.
You could do a whole week on just Animal Collective songs. The songs aren't always hits but they are always interesting. And the ones that do hit? Oh boy. Amazing tracks.
This band is definitely known as being one of the craziest vocal groups out there with their weird psychedlicized harmonies. Each of them has a bunch of solo material and collaborations as well that does demonstrate their other talents.
You nailed it by saying this is childish. Animal Collective is all about combining the youthful energy and fun with adult thoughts and burdens. And their music does (usually) have a deceptively simple stuff going on. Fucking shoutout to Amanda. Idk who you are, but ya did good with this recommendation. Love Animal Collective, second favorite band of all time. Wildly creative, changing sound with every damn album. Everything they released up to Centipede Hz is pretty much gold. I'd HIGHLY recommend listening to their song Alvin Row (really, I recommend their albums, but Alvin Row really showcases their experimentation, awesome composition, playfulness with pop form, noise, concept, etc. It's kind of their mission statement song, off their very first album.
Regarding the ending anlysis of the lyrics; the lead singer who wrote many of the songs was married to the woman who played piano on this album at the time. They have since divorced but they released a duo album called "pullhair rubeye" - Avey tare & kria brekkan, which is like a much more stripped back version of this album. Unfortunately, they released the album in reverse so not many people have had the chance to enjoy one of my favorite records.
AC is my favorite band. I love looking for reaction videos of em on TH-cam. But I really loved how thoughtful, thorough, and open-minded you were. Somebody else said it better in the comments, Animal Collective's music can be deceptively simple, but your lengthy read on the broad concept of the album from just one song was pretty dope. I really really hope you check out other songs of theirs from other albums they have. They're such a diverse band. I'm certainly gonna check out more videos of yours.
I’d recommend checking out What Would I Want? Sky to get a good sense of what this band is about (although it’s almost impossible to pin AnCo down). It’s a dense, complex harmonic masterpiece.
This was the first track by Animal Collective I ever heard. A friend showed it to me back in 2006 when I was 14 years old. It blew me away and change my perspective of music forever. Still one of my favorite bands of all time, but definitely not for everyone!
If The Residents and The Beach Boys had a baby, it'd be Animal Collective. (this era and the Sung Tongs era's vocals bite heavily from The Residents' Eskimo album, not gonna lie)
Thank you so much for whoever recommended this, it's definitely my favorite animal collective song. And I absolutely agree that the album artwork is fantastic. If you wanted to classify the genre of the song, I think it's considered "freak-folk" There is a lot of repetitiveness in the track, but thats a lot of what makes Animal Collective's sound great imo, they use repetition a lot to bring an amazing sense of transcendence (they do this incredibly well with the song Daily Routine as well, really the whole album Merriweather Post Pavilion is a transcendental masterpiece)
a lot of the songs on the album Feels have a folky feeling, but theyre all so different but also cohesive?? every album has its own disticnt sound and vibe, but each song is so unique in and of itself. Animal Collective makes no sense and all the sense at the same time and it wrecks my brain but i love it.
At that time they used to develop their songs by writing the outline and then jamming them on tour until they got the final thing. It really shows on songs like the purple bottle and it’s why it has that jam sound.
Thank you for talking about Animal Collective! They are definitely my cup of tea, but I like unconventional brews 🙂. Avey Tare (David Portner), the singer/songwriter, wrote this for his then-wife, Kria. She's a musician also, but the relationship didn't last. I love how imperfectly-perfect the songs are in their own cocoons, the layers are really fun to explore.
Heard of Animal Collective but this is my first time hearing them. Really interesting track. At first I thought that this was just going to be a typical indie rock track from a band that went more for quirk and tone than musicality, but as it kept going and kept changing and adding a lot of musical layers the more I found myself impressed and entertained by what was going on. This is definitely one I feel I could listen to a few times and keep peeling back layers of everything going on, and yet the same time it's still quite accessible. There's still something in the tonal "quirkiness" that turns me off, but that's probably just because of my association of those elements with bands that try to make it on personality alone.
The rabbit hole of animal Collective is quite a versatile journey they do anything from this feel good vibe to psychedelic soundscapes. You should check out songs from the strawberry Jam album. A lot of Beatles and Grateful Dead influences. Thank you for reaching.
I think purple represents passion. The way green represents greed and I think red is rage or anger. I think that's where he was going with the purple references there.
That's weird. I listened to this song and rest of the album it's from 2 days ago. Interesting album I suppose. Hey, when is your birthday again Bryan? Sure that it's either 10th,11th,14th or 4th of January, I think. I said I'd try to remember it, but that was a long time ago I said that. Happy Birthday for whenever..
@@CriticalReactions Oh damn, nvm. The thought that counts I suppose. I'll remember it properly next year. Wonder if you give yourself a day off for other things on your birthday. It would not be unreasonable to do this.
@@PEGGLORE Naw, I don't usually treat my birthday as anything special. It'll be just another Thursday for me. I might feel different about it if it were later in the year but having Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, and 3 kids birthdays (between my own and nieces) all within 3 months I'm ready for just another boring day 😅
This isn't my cup of tea, either. But I love stretching my borders. Just like training, if you do some peak performance exercises, you will push your borders out- and upwards. Next time I may find this or similar music more and more enjoyable. I didn't dislike it, though.

The Purple Bottle is 'straightforward' by the bands standards, The Burglars is absolutely mental.
@@chrisbfreelance brings me joy to see someone also loving that track, I listened on repeat when I first listened to PW
But PB hits probably as hard as any AC song@@chrisbfreelance
At 22:21 you say "Kinda Bonkers", which is the name of another Animal Collective song lol
That's awesome. I feel compelled to check that one out now :)
@@CriticalReactions there are some other very interesting Animal Collective songs that would be great for future videos, would love to see it
This band is definitely known as being one of the craziest vocal groups out there with their weird psychedlicized harmonies. Each of them has a bunch of solo material and collaborations as well that does demonstrate their other talents.
Love coming across this! This song was the song my husband and i played after our wedding ceremony, for walking back down the aisle in celebration
AC is such a special unique band. Esp in the time when this came out. Their whole discography is just plain fun chaotic music

I second Alvin Row
perfectly nailed it post-rock/folk on this one. it was obvious in your realtime reaction that it was genuinely interesting

It's fun and fast. A little folky. I'm glad i got to listen to it. I like jam music. You can feel the music.
Keep the animal collective reactions coming!!!

from what i remember, that song is the only time the grateful dead have allowed their music to be sampled!
I'd say brothersport and fireworks show them off well.

Please do more AnCo songs. There's endless unique music ideas to analyze. Been doing it for 15 yrs now

Seeing a first time listener to my favorite animal song. MADE MY DAY.
You are so good at this I'm actually pissed you don't have more views

You gotta listen to Alvin Row
He did and was NOT a fan lol the frequencies killed it for him. I love Alvin Row so much tho hhaa
youshould see them play live acoustic its good af!
Animal Collective is so much fun!

22:19 do that song next 😏 also animal collective kinda bonkers
My favourite band formed after 2000. I’m old though!😅
I think purple represents passion. The way green represents greed and I think red is rage or anger. I think that's where he was going with the purple references there.
Do esspolde on Danae manatee 😊
Hey I got a question
Can I tell you that you are the purple in me?
I would classify them as progessive psychedelic experimental post rock lol
That is easily one of the longer genre classifiers I've seen for a band I've covered -- but it's so accurate. 😄
and its crazy you call them "kinda "bonkers" they have a song called kinda bonkers
Well now I gotta find out what they consider to be bonkers :)
PLEAAASE do banshee beat. instant subscribe, this is awesome

Your speaking voice reminds me of John Frusciante's speaking voice.
I love this song but it is a little strange! you might enjoy "my girls" or "summertime clothes" by them, they are both a bit more normal.
No right in the fire listen to panic and then start up danse manatee lmao
