I weirdly got into a fanboys mind set when you were describing like a year ago back to TH-camrs and genres I really liked specifically the sense of denial the only time I over felt like I overstepped my boundaries was in one video by The Right Opinion that criticized the story time animator genre by saying what he was doing was going to be pointless as the majority of people will completely forget about it in a month even bringing up the Paul brothers fiasco as an example and I know that it was unnecessary and thankfully it was not given attention but I still added an edited Apology when I came to the realization of how unnecessary it was and to my knowledge I never pulled that stunt again even when I was in denial over the change the channel movement I never really said anything about it or on videos criticizing Nostalgia Critics work so I have thankfully improved myself on this account Although that never stops me from being pissed when someone doesn’t acknowledge the good in Disney Star Wars
I got to be honest with you Snake. MK2011 Complete Edition is still my favourite video of yours, because even if i don't agree with everything you say there, i can feel your passion pouring from the screen troughout it's entirety. Despite being angry for most of the video, your argumentation was good and even though at the time i only played MK2011 and didn't share that dedication to MK i quickly noticed you're huge fan of this franchise for a long time AND you're critical of it, because you want it to be good. That's the main of problem of fanboys - they can't see how much what they like can be improved and any criticism they immediately take as an attack. I felt the same everytime someone shit talked about Dead Rising franchise. I loved the games, but many people were complaining that they are shit because they have time limit or are too hard, which i never understood and right away thought those people are just stupid. Later i realized that most of modern games handhold you like a little baby and people are used to it, so a game that kicks your ass on your first playtrough is seen as impossible or not fun at all and they never give it a chance. What changed my perspective was understanding of the way people approach games and what they expect from them. DR looks like a dumb and easy zombie slasher, but it plays more like Dark Souls (which is upfront with what it offers). Now when someone says they don't like it i can totally understand why and instead try to explain how to get into the games. To convince people that MK11 story is objectively bad you need to explain how alternative would make it better for everyone. You mentioned that MK2011 story mode could have different ammount of rounds based on the context of the fight. Give a good example of that idea and how it would improve the game. People will be more on board with it than just saying it's bad and leaving it at that. Other than that, keep up the good work. I always look forward to your videos.

To be fair, the MCU has generated a lot of contrarians who shit on it for the sake of it, decrying it as "capeshit" when they've never even seen the movies. I don't deny there's a lot of MCU fanboys out there, but the contrarians are even more annoying.

That's my precise sentiment when I say that I partially blame brainless fans like HBTW or the people behind MK Wiki for the bad writing of MK11. When the MKX comic came out those fanboys accepted it as canon despite its many retcons. Of course that's because Netherrealm said it's supposed to be a prequel to the game, but just taking their word without even allowing yourself to criticize the choice is the kind of behaviour that hurts the franchise. And in this specific case it allowed NetherRealm to do the same with MK11, giving the writer of the comic creative freedom over the game.

Exactly. Take a look at Star Wars. Even the critics are toxic manbabies who whined when a large majority of the fanbase called out the sequels for being trash, and relegated it to Star Wars fatigue when Solo didn't hit box office. They didn't even give evidence either, further adding credence that the critiques about the Sequels were in one, largely validated, and two, prove they have no other arguments.
As a fan I totally feel this on so many levels especially with RE and other franchises. MK I loved to death but they really ruined a lot of my favorite characters from Smoke to Jade and Sindel. It kinda sucks the direction NRS is going.
I'm an NRS fan and have been watching your videos for a while. Your criticism for NRS' stories is very honest and your story revisions and wasted plotential videos are a lot better than what NRS has given us to be quite honest. I enjoy the series and MK's story, but it is flawed. Your videos make me realize how much I wish NRS steps up their writing and stop it with botching legacy characters (coughSINDELcough) with their random retcons.
We need people like you to continue making content that encourages critical thinking and reasonable discourse. It's two skills that have all but been lost today. It's creators like you that make me put that extra bit of thought into something when I'm writing a piece. Don't feel like you're alone in this endevour either. I'm pretty sure you know that every huge fandom of any franchise in any media suffers the same people who will unreasonably defend something absolutely awful just because they like it. It's happening right now with the new Star Wars trilogy. The entertainment industry these days is build to prey on people who don't care to give real thought about the media they're consuming. I've just noticed how awful it looks to see Johnny killing his wife and/or daughter. lol But yeah, I totally agree. In fact, being in a creative profession often requires critical thinking to improve on what came before. It's not just true for games. I feel like I can be a victim of passion too. While I try not to be too intense in discussions, passion takes hold and it might come across as visious. Passion is proof of love or enjoyment on the content as the opposite is indifference. Most who dislike something, usually wouldn't spend hours of work to talk about it. I've never seen a single Star Wars movie so my opinion on the new movies would be based on nothing. Also, as somebody that struggles with social cues and socialising in general, I often misinterpret things or say something that could be easily misunderstood. So this cancel first, ask questions never mentality would easily destroy people like me. People with Aspergers, many people suffer with it.
I feel like you cannot really say you “Love” something unless you can admit it’s flaws. For example, I personally enjoy the Uncharted series, but I can tell you if and when a Plot point in the series is stupid, or if something Nate and friends do in the game is dumb or something along those lines. Same thing applies to any other series I enjoy, such as No More Heroes and Mortal Kombat. Going back to my initial point, I don’t think you can truly Love something unless you admit it’s flaws because blindly saying you love something without being able to admit it’s flaws gives off the vibe to me that you’re just enjoying something for no reason other then to say you like it. Being able to admit the flaws of something and still being able to say that you love something even after those flaws have been pointed out is the real sign of true enjoyment of something because you have the ability to look at those flaws and say “Yeah, those exists. But I still love this thing because of X, Y, and Z”
The worst fanboys and fangirls are the ones who call themselves "real or true" fans when there's no such thing. They think you've got to blindly like and praise every part of a series whether it's good, bad, in the middle or whatever. When no you don't have to like every instalment to be a fan of the series as a whole.

Allow me to say this. I really enjoy your content if I may disagree with you at times. Personally, I loved MK11 and the story for what it was, but I can also acknowledge some of the inconsistencies of NR studios. For example, they stated that the Cryomancer brothers Bi Han and Kuai Liang were kidnapped at birth and raised by the Lin Kuei, but in MK11, there's an interaction between Sub-Zero and Noob where Sub says the name originally belonged to their Grand Father, to which my mindset is...how would you even know whom that is, but then again, maybe he did off-screen research into his heritage, but still, doesn't make sense. Personally, I like how the new Sindel plays but and I like the idea of an alternate universe Sindel that really was evil through and through and saw Shao Khan as her way to gain more power, but this Sindel isn't working for me story wise and personally, I preferred the tragic story of the original Sindel where she eventually came back from the darkness, into the light and died at the end of Armageddon for the forces of Good. It was brilliant writing that didn't need to be fixed and all NR had to do was copy and paste, update her fighting abilities, boom, you're good to go. They did that with a lot of character and a lot of aspects of the game. The NR MK games so far remind me of the new SW trilogy. MK 2011 had great potential and set the ground work for an amazing story for the 3D era despite inconsistencies that could've been addressed via comics or the sequel. The next two games, while I liked the story for both, had the same amount of inconsistencies and poor writing that The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker had and realistically would be better suited for a hard reboot after MK11 with better story writing and NR really taking a hard look at themselves and the franchise and realizing what the fans really want. Game Companies need to realize that they not only need to build games that they are inspired to make and will have fun with themselves, but also need to look at the fanbase of established franchises and think about WHAT THOSE FANS as a whole will enjoy and like/love. Making a casual friendly game is fine and all, but it will piss off the true fans. Appealing to the true fans will not only see high sales, but they will build a community to uplift the game instead of tearing it down. Look at Destiny. When the game was made (both D1 and D2), there was a lot of fan backlash on the state of the game. When Taken King (D1) and Forsaken (D2) came out, those two expansions appealed to the fans and caused the community to flourish and grow. That's what NR needs to do with MK and make it good for both audiences.

Bro don’t worry I have agreed with a lot of your point of views. One of my favorite characters has been continually shafted. Fujin is greatly uncared for or given the time of day. After what they did to Sindel I’m kinda of happy they didn’t PC my boy Fujin because left up to them. He will be Raiden’s gay lover that we never knew about and that is why he is so understanding to Kung Jin. Don’t worry about the Fanboys. I loved both the 3D and 2D era. But the recent run has been disappointing. Side note: I like what they did for Johnny Cage but I think it came at to high a price. Debate me lol.

The gameplay was never my main issue with the new trilogy. MK9 was and still is my favorite of the trilogy because it stayed close to what the OG style of MK was from both gameplay and its goofy shit. MKX and MK11 how ever ditched it and did alot of fan favorite characters dirty. MKX did alot of things that MK11 both tried to fix and fucked up on worse. I think NRS pulled a Disney SW with this trilogy....
I agree that there are fans and fanboys. But a lot of time it is hard to discern between the two. Person might genuinely care about franchise, but doesn't see issue with some things that other people might find bad. Of course, if their position backed up by nothing more than "no, U hater", than those people don't deserved to be listened to. I am myself often has views regarding stories and characters, which people might find questionable, so I know what it is like when you've written out as just a fanboy.
Tbh I'd say MKX was the weakest. Though MK9 is easily better than 11. But that's only for the new era games. If we count all the games I'd say 2, 4 & Armageddon are the weakest.
Anybody who likes sindel's retcon are fuckin frauds. When a company presents a story in a game, there's no turning back. The story should be good and shouldn't be half-assed when it's time to deliver. Over the years NRS has good ideas, but the execution was always fucked
persona 5 makes my head hurt because so many people praise it as a masterpiece of JRPG storytelling and yadda yadda when genuinely it's story and characters are some of the worst I've seen I really do want to like it but the characters are so damn flat and the plot is nothing more than a good vs evil power fantasy, and for the megaten franchise I expect much more
You did the right thing by critiquing NRS. Fanboys/girls who mindlessly defend serieses are not helping do to their inability to see the flaws of their favorite serieses. Then there's the other side who have NO justification in their hatred for the series and can't make a reason they hate it. The way you went about this is not only right but JUSTIFIED. Opinion on this Snake? -- i think that the generation (using that word loosely) difference of MK fans are where the split is. We, the Midway era generation (grew up on the trilogy, gold and 3D era) due to our age and perspective, assuming most of us are mature by our age and objective as possible... we know the real and what is the retconned. Whereas the NRS Era (hopped on the WB games train, 2011 and later) don't have an iota of a clue what the history is and who has been retconned and who was x aspect and not y alignment, etc. Due to their younger age they lack sense and maturity? Psychology basis. However, there are cretins in both camps.
I think it plays a part. I understand that MK9- MK11 is a reboot, and I try to respect it as It's own thing, but It's hard to stand by idly when NRS seems to be taking potshot after potshot at the OG series/fans, and in particular at anything that John Tobias had a hand in. Even as It's own thing, the reboot storyline creates a lot of plot holes (who killed Jerrod?) What is worse is that many of the changes to character design, personality, endings, etc aren't made because they want to take a different route, but because they are trying to atone for MK9 and the original series for how 90s edgy it was.

I really appreciate your opinions on the critiques because when MK9 came out, i thought and to this day still think its the best MK game ever made. However, i didnt think about the story whilst playing though i am a huge fan of MK lore, i didnt think about the inconsistencies during the new timeline. I just accepted it for what it was until i seen your critiques and realized alot of it was wrong. Alot of it was changed for no reason. Mk11 kinda explains the time travel bit a little when Raiden said he sent the visions to "A PAST SELF" assuming it was one of the many timelines and i guess i get it, tho im sure thats not what the developers were going for prior to making MK9. Now that I think of it, since Kronica rewinded time and and brought back good Raiden deleting Dark Raiden, did Armageddon Raiden become the Raiden in the current timeline? Anyway, before I digress, I enjoyed the story but at the same time, you brought alot of good points about everything wrong with the story. I been a subscriber ever since lol. Really lookin forward to the MK11 critique. I thought it was a good story but there were alot wrong with the lore there too. I really miss the original timeline. The new one sucks compared to the old one in my opinion. If Liu Kang, Kitana and Raiden reset the new timeline, I wana see 2 things: 1, The story of the Great Kung Lao defeating Shang Tsung and dying by Goro, and 2. The original timeline fleshed out properly. The first of the trilogy going forward can focus on Shinnok's betrayal of the Elder Gods, Shao Khan conquering Edenia and the great Kung Lao defeating Shang Tsung. The second can be a retelling of MK1-3 and the third can be deadly alliance- armageddon. Not sure if they can pull that off but id love to see them try it so we can get a full story. And you know what, fuck Quan Chi, because before you, I thought I was the only who hated that bald fucker. I hate him and Sektor. 2:01 A fan likes something but knows it's not perfect and there are things that can be done better about it, points out what's wrong and how it can be done better, can handle criticism of it and accepts that not everyone likes what they like and can take jokes about the thing they like and joke about it themselves. Fanboys and fangirls on the other hand are just obsessed, think it's perfect and flawless, that nothing has to be done better, dismiss constructive criticism as "haters" out to ruin the thing and their enjoyment of it for them, think them liking it means everyone has to and demand you take what they like 100 percent seriously.
It's people like that, the fanboys, that drove me away from using the mk subreddit, you can't criticize 11 for anything without getting insulted, downvoted, or critcized because god forbid I point out a flaw in one of my favorite franchises. I'm really tired of people bootlicking Netherrealm and it took until 11 for me to start realizing the problems, when they became much more apparent. I'm worried the future of MK will go downhill with all the bad writing and shallow characterization 11 brought us, but people won't point it out enough.
I sympathize with you, my Friend. This was my general feeling about the whole "DmC" debacle. I shudder at the thought of even having to relive those dark days. Sadly that seems to be the problem nowadays. Being able to critique something that you love/like is important. But no, you should kowtow and love it no matter what. I learned that from Bruce Lee, who was critical of even his own Martial Art, Jeet Kune Do, as he wanted his Art and it's practicioners to grow through constant learning. Likewise, just because I am very fond of something (I.E. Bloodborne, or perhaps my interest and practice of the Filipino Martial Arts) that doesn't mean I will not open myself to a conversation critiquing either of those. There's a reason why the yin and yang have two sides to it after all.
@@CourtneyWilliams-dr9tb Indeed. I'm no fan of the reboot but I recognize it had good concepts that influenced DMC 5's overall design to make it the masterpiece that it is. (One of) the main problems I had with the original series is that it was a total mess when it came to platforming. Much of my frustration came from the horrendously tacked on bits of gameplay when you had to make timed jumps around a certain area. I.E.) The room with blocks in DMC 3, the platforming in Fortuna Castle in DMC 4, etc.
DmC was the exact opposite, pissing on a game because it's not le gamer pizza dante just like when nero rolled in. the game has flaws but people turn a blind eye to DMC doing the exact same shit

But there are plenty of other reasons to criticize DmC as a game and it's protagonist than his not looking or acting like DMC Dante. There was animosity coming from both sides of the argument, yes. But Ninja Theory and their supporters were and are still blatantly tactless and, sad to say, a bit blissfully ignorant about the whole thing.
Here's where I think the issue lies, assumption on your part as you mentioned, and delivery. Rule number one is never assume anything. "It only makes an ass out of u and me," is a common phrase because it's not real communication. Which leads to inevitable misunderstandings and otherwise often avoidable disputes. Your definition of fan for instance. Personally I operate on the original definition given that fan is just slang for fanatic. Coined most notably in response to over enthused fans of celebrities and bands like the Beatles. Screaming so loud that neither they, or the band could even hear the music being played at minimum. Committing murder due to the refusal of an autograph and worst. With that, I generally treat people who call themselves fans in any capacity as a potentially annoying dickhead or psychopath. Stan as you mentioned it is just the name of a song and character from Eminem created as a thinly veiled metaphor for his own rabbid fan base. The misconception with it's usage these days being that because of the character's actions in the song they associate it with insane behavior, and an undying love for a famous person they'd hypothetically live and die for.... But as we established, that's literally all a fan(atic) already is, no subcategories needed. As far as delivery goes, I think it's one part verbal execution, and another part cultural miscommunication. See one of the things about your videos when you get impassioned or snarkily say "you're fuckin wrong," or "they don't have the intellect," You tend to sound like the typical American super nerd gatekeeper who no one wants to deal with over here. I get that this probably isn't what you're going for because you share a lot of parallels with a lot of the British content and comedy I've consumed that has a lot more of a dry delivery. But a looooooooot of that doesn't translate well, hence the Americanized remakes of shows like The Office with WIDELY different styles of humor. To a lot of people you probably just sound super bitter, pissy, and the jokes are lost. Speaking to my own experience, I had to pause a second and figure out what you were going for when I first discovered your channel. Whether you were being a cheeky dick for laughs, or unironically ChrisChan with a broader vocabulary. Which again isn't your fault, but due to the TH-cam algorithms, you pretty much got popular in the same way that a lot of content creators did being an English speaker in a densely populated non-US city. Aba & Preach, PewDiePie, Filthy Frank, KSI Pyrocynical, Every Frame a Painting, The Closer Look, Super Eyepatch Wolf. All of you have a lot of world wide draw which means attracting viewers with a lot of contrasting sensibilities and potentially even broken English barriers where nuances like sarcasm are already lost. Obliterated when not delivered a certain way. Which is why a lot of TH-camrs end up having to.... adapt, for lack of a better term, or else they tend to keep running into a bunch of backlash.... and even then there still mi(nevitably)ght be backlash.
I don't always agree with what you say but i do respect you having the courage to tell everyone what you really think and sometimes opened my eyes to some of those flaws. I do think sometimes we have to accept that the writers should take risks with some characters and let them go in a different path( like lui kang going evil as a reminant.) However they should not reckon a character like sindel and change her backstory that would change the whole character. I could accept lui kang as a evil reminant because we saw how the event's changed him, therefore he was the same lui kang but this time thing turned out even worse for him. Sindel on the other hand has her whole backstory changed and pretty much created a whole different character in sindel's skin.
I only liked the fire and ice chapter because of the bond between sub and scorpion and the ending because it's just one person going against three opponents and then kronika. Other than that, the story was awful and some parts was just stupid.
I respect your opinion on this topic. I can understand your anger and frustration with the modern story. Imo I feel that this story was ok minus a few things. I would love for Netherrealm to go back to how they did the stories pre reboot because they took risks. But it seems like they continue to hire writers who don't know the full lore and want to change stuff simply because they can instead of explaining it. But In terms of the reboot stories I liked 11 more than other two because 9 and X were just alternate tellings of 1 to 4 though I do love many of the new characters introduced in them. And I hope that maybe after this the next game has a unique feel to it especially with the whole Liu Kang becoming protector of Earth. I see potential there though maybe I might be foolishly hopeful but hopeful nonetheless
Thanks to YMS, I now approach things differently. To paraphrase him, I went from "This thing is good" to "I really enjoyed it". Makes enjoying/criticizing content much more better looking at things in a grey outlook.

Personally, I see fans as being dedicated to a thing to the point they'll do research on older entries in a series, than perhaps take that into consideration and reassess the quality of the entry that got into the series. Another thing I would count as making someone a fan is loving the characters for more than aesthetic reasons. I'm not saying people can't just love the appearances or gameplay of MK or any other game series, but calling them fans in the same way as people who are well and truly dedicated seems too much. I'd call them "casual fans." It's not much of a separation, I know, but it seems needed nowadays when these same types of open their mouths saying other fans should accept bad content because the former doesn't care about the old stuff, like the fanboys you pointed out. The distinction makes it a bit more clear that maybe these kinds of fans aren't qualified to make statements about the quality of the writing or the deep intricacies of the gameplay. I can admit it, im a fanboy, but i do see both sides of the game like mk11 story is garbage, i just like the gameplay and the gear costume crration thing, and i 101% agree with sindel, they messed her up completely, she WAS good, (in charater backstory) now she. "Killed Jerod" i think shaw kahn did that, oh wait he did, its the writers dont take into perspective their old stories, her gameplay in mk11 is good nevertheless.

I honestly love your opinion on the 3D Era of MK. I've heard people on TH-cam who genuine do not like it as if the new timeline and games are just absolutely perfect, and it drives me nuts.

I try not to, I really, really do. I was never a Sindel fan, but I agreed that she was handled poorly, since MK9. Even with some of the Earthrealm warriors back, I still hate the fact that she easily killed most of them, in MK9. In the PS2 era games, I really got into the lore, and I even played through MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero, for the story. Then since MK9 I feel like I don't even care anymore
Whole heartidly agree. The one aspect that Netherrealm Studios that has always gotten right is style. There are many "individual" aspects of the franchise at a whole (outside mechanics) that I believe are genuinely intriguing, most particularly the character development of Johnny Cage and to a degree, Kabal and Sonya. IMO, MKX and MK11 are a downgrade from MK9 in terms of what the games offer as a whole. Gameplay, sure, has been unique and interesting, but both MKX and MK11 were such JUMPS in story, both as a whole and for certain character arcs (that includes Johnny, but for some reason, it's more endearing and seems... deserved), and these games both left so much left on the table in terms of what we could've gotten. Is it hard to put more story in with the cinematic they have provided us? Yes, most definitely yes. But is it an excuse to cut corners?
This haopens to anything popular. Some people just can't help but emotionally latch onto a material object owned by a company that doesn't give two shits about them. Look a the RWBY fandom, they like something extremely flawed, but they don't want to hear anything bad about it.

As someone who does tend to fangirl over Neatherrealm Mortal Kombat, I can't imagine tearing someone down who doesn't agree with me. I like to hold opinions differing or similar at the same level neither are more "correct".
I'm still trying to learn a lot about the MK stories, both Midway and NRS periods, since at best, I'm a casual fan. But I can tell from your videos that there's a lot of issues in regards to the narratives and stories with the NRS-produced games. Problems that should be considered, critiqued and improved upon. Because there's still a lot of potential in making the world of MK really intriguing and fun, without having to throw out established backgrounds for characters in favour of stale, nonsensical and threadbare ones. MK isn't just about blood, gore and violence. This isn't the 90's

I weirdly got into a fanboys mind set when you were describing like a year ago back to TH-camrs and genres I really liked specifically the sense of denial the only time I over felt like I overstepped my boundaries was in one video by The Right Opinion that criticized the story time animator genre by saying what he was doing was going to be pointless as the majority of people will completely forget about it in a month even bringing up the Paul brothers fiasco as an example and I know that it was unnecessary and thankfully it was not given attention but I still added an edited Apology when I came to the realization of how unnecessary it was and to my knowledge I never pulled that stunt again even when I was in denial over the change the channel movement I never really said anything about it or on videos criticizing Nostalgia Critics work so I have thankfully improved myself on this account

I got to be honest with you Snake. MK2011 Complete Edition is still my favourite video of yours, because even if i don't agree with everything you say there, i can feel your passion pouring from the screen troughout it's entirety. Despite being angry for most of the video, your argumentation was good and even though at the time i only played MK2011 and didn't share that dedication to MK i quickly noticed you're huge fan of this franchise for a long time AND you're critical of it, because you want it to be good.
That's the main of problem of fanboys - they can't see how much what they like can be improved and any criticism they immediately take as an attack.
I felt the same everytime someone shit talked about Dead Rising franchise. I loved the games, but many people were complaining that they are shit because they have time limit or are too hard, which i never understood and right away thought those people are just stupid. Later i realized that most of modern games handhold you like a little baby and people are used to it, so a game that kicks your ass on your first playtrough is seen as impossible or not fun at all and they never give it a chance.
What changed my perspective was understanding of the way people approach games and what they expect from them. DR looks like a dumb and easy zombie slasher, but it plays more like Dark Souls (which is upfront with what it offers). Now when someone says they don't like it i can totally understand why and instead try to explain how to get into the games.
To convince people that MK11 story is objectively bad you need to explain how alternative would make it better for everyone. You mentioned that MK2011 story mode could have different ammount of rounds based on the context of the fight. Give a good example of that idea and how it would improve the game. People will be more on board with it than just saying it's bad and leaving it at that.
Other than that, keep up the good work. I always look forward to your videos.

That's my precise sentiment when I say that I partially blame brainless fans like HBTW or the people behind MK Wiki for the bad writing of MK11.
When the MKX comic came out those fanboys accepted it as canon despite its many retcons. Of course that's because Netherrealm said it's supposed to be a prequel to the game, but just taking their word without even allowing yourself to criticize the choice is the kind of behaviour that hurts the franchise.
And in this specific case it allowed NetherRealm to do the same with MK11, giving the writer of the comic creative freedom over the game.

Even the critics are toxic manbabies who whined when a large majority of the fanbase called out the sequels for being trash, and relegated it to Star Wars fatigue when Solo didn't hit box office. They didn't even give evidence either, further adding credence that the critiques about the Sequels were in one, largely validated, and two, prove they have no other arguments.
As a fan I totally feel this on so many levels especially with RE and other franchises. MK I loved to death but they really ruined a lot of my favorite characters from Smoke to Jade and Sindel. It kinda sucks the direction NRS is going.
I'm an NRS fan and have been watching your videos for a while. Your criticism for NRS' stories is very honest and your story revisions and wasted plotential videos are a lot better than what NRS has given us to be quite honest. I enjoy the series and MK's story, but it is flawed. Your videos make me realize how much I wish NRS steps up their writing and stop it with botching legacy characters (coughSINDELcough) with their random retcons.

But yeah, I totally agree. In fact, being in a creative profession often requires critical thinking to improve on what came before. It's not just true for games. I feel like I can be a victim of passion too. While I try not to be too intense in discussions, passion takes hold and it might come across as visious.
Passion is proof of love or enjoyment on the content as the opposite is indifference. Most who dislike something, usually wouldn't spend hours of work to talk about it. I've never seen a single Star Wars movie so my opinion on the new movies would be based on nothing.
Also, as somebody that struggles with social cues and socialising in general, I often misinterpret things or say something that could be easily misunderstood. So this cancel first, ask questions never mentality would easily destroy people like me. People with Aspergers, many people suffer with it.
I feel like you cannot really say you “Love” something unless you can admit it’s flaws. For example, I personally enjoy the Uncharted series, but I can tell you if and when a Plot point in the series is stupid, or if something Nate and friends do in the game is dumb or something along those lines. Same thing applies to any other series I enjoy, such as No More Heroes and Mortal Kombat. Going back to my initial point, I don’t think you can truly Love something unless you admit it’s flaws because blindly saying you love something without being able to admit it’s flaws gives off the vibe to me that you’re just enjoying something for no reason other then to say you like it. Being able to admit the flaws of something and still being able to say that you love something even after those flaws have been pointed out is the real sign of true enjoyment of something because you have the ability to look at those flaws and say “Yeah, those exists. But I still love this thing because of X, Y, and Z”

When I voiced concerned for the direction the RE2 "Remake" was taking I was literally called "not a true fan".
Allow me to say this. I really enjoy your content if I may disagree with you at times. Personally, I loved MK11 and the story for what it was, but I can also acknowledge some of the inconsistencies of NR studios. For example, they stated that the Cryomancer brothers Bi Han and Kuai Liang were kidnapped at birth and raised by the Lin Kuei, but in MK11, there's an interaction between Sub-Zero and Noob where Sub says the name originally belonged to their Grand Father, to which my mindset is...how would you even know whom that is, but then again, maybe he did off-screen research into his heritage, but still, doesn't make sense. Personally, I like how the new Sindel plays but and I like the idea of an alternate universe Sindel that really was evil through and through and saw Shao Khan as her way to gain more power, but this Sindel isn't working for me story wise and personally, I preferred the tragic story of the original Sindel where she eventually came back from the darkness, into the light and died at the end of Armageddon for the forces of Good. It was brilliant writing that didn't need to be fixed and all NR had to do was copy and paste, update her fighting abilities, boom, you're good to go. They did that with a lot of character and a lot of aspects of the game. The NR MK games so far remind me of the new SW trilogy. MK 2011 had great potential and set the ground work for an amazing story for the 3D era despite inconsistencies that could've been addressed via comics or the sequel. The next two games, while I liked the story for both, had the same amount of inconsistencies and poor writing that The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker had and realistically would be better suited for a hard reboot after MK11 with better story writing and NR really taking a hard look at themselves and the franchise and realizing what the fans really want. Game Companies need to realize that they not only need to build games that they are inspired to make and will have fun with themselves, but also need to look at the fanbase of established franchises and think about WHAT THOSE FANS as a whole will enjoy and like/love. Making a casual friendly game is fine and all, but it will piss off the true fans. Appealing to the true fans will not only see high sales, but they will build a community to uplift the game instead of tearing it down. Look at Destiny. When the game was made (both D1 and D2), there was a lot of fan backlash on the state of the game. When Taken King (D1) and Forsaken (D2) came out, those two expansions appealed to the fans and caused the community to flourish and grow. That's what NR needs to do with MK and make it good for both audiences.

Bro don’t worry I have agreed with a lot of your point of views. One of my favorite characters has been continually shafted. Fujin is greatly uncared for or given the time of day. After what they did to Sindel I’m kinda of happy they didn’t PC my boy Fujin because left up to them. He will be Raiden’s gay lover that we never knew about and that is why he is so understanding to Kung Jin.
Don’t worry about the Fanboys. I loved both the 3D and 2D era. But the recent run has been disappointing.

MK9 was and still is my favorite of the trilogy because it stayed close to what the OG style of MK was from both gameplay and its goofy shit. MKX and MK11 how ever ditched it and did alot of fan favorite characters dirty. MKX did alot of things that MK11 both tried to fix and fucked up on worse.
I think NRS pulled a Disney SW with this trilogy....

Opinion on this Snake? -- i think that the generation (using that word loosely) difference of MK fans are where the split is. We, the Midway era generation (grew up on the trilogy, gold and 3D era) due to our age and perspective, assuming most of us are mature by our age and objective as possible... we know the real and what is the retconned. Whereas the NRS Era (hopped on the WB games train, 2011 and later) don't have an iota of a clue what the history is and who has been retconned and who was x aspect and not y alignment, etc. Due to their younger age they lack sense and maturity? Psychology basis. However, there are cretins in both camps.

I think it plays a part. I understand that MK9- MK11 is a reboot, and I try to respect it as It's own thing, but It's hard to stand by idly when NRS seems to be taking potshot after potshot at the OG series/fans, and in particular at anything that John Tobias had a hand in.
Even as It's own thing, the reboot storyline creates a lot of plot holes (who killed Jerrod?)
What is worse is that many of the changes to character design, personality, endings, etc aren't made because they want to take a different route, but because they are trying to atone for MK9 and the original series for how 90s edgy it was.

I really appreciate your opinions on the critiques because when MK9 came out, i thought and to this day still think its the best MK game ever made. However, i didnt think about the story whilst playing though i am a huge fan of MK lore, i didnt think about the inconsistencies during the new timeline. I just accepted it for what it was until i seen your critiques and realized alot of it was wrong. Alot of it was changed for no reason. Mk11 kinda explains the time travel bit a little when Raiden said he sent the visions to "A PAST SELF" assuming it was one of the many timelines and i guess i get it, tho im sure thats not what the developers were going for prior to making MK9. Now that I think of it, since Kronica rewinded time and and brought back good Raiden deleting Dark Raiden, did Armageddon Raiden become the Raiden in the current timeline? Anyway, before I digress, I enjoyed the story but at the same time, you brought alot of good points about everything wrong with the story. I been a subscriber ever since lol. Really lookin forward to the MK11 critique. I thought it was a good story but there were alot wrong with the lore there too. I really miss the original timeline. The new one sucks compared to the old one in my opinion. If Liu Kang, Kitana and Raiden reset the new timeline, I wana see 2 things: 1, The story of the Great Kung Lao defeating Shang Tsung and dying by Goro, and 2. The original timeline fleshed out properly. The first of the trilogy going forward can focus on Shinnok's betrayal of the Elder Gods, Shao Khan conquering Edenia and the great Kung Lao defeating Shang Tsung. The second can be a retelling of MK1-3 and the third can be deadly alliance- armageddon. Not sure if they can pull that off but id love to see them try it so we can get a full story. And you know what, fuck Quan Chi, because before you, I thought I was the only who hated that bald fucker. I hate him and Sektor. 2:01 A fan likes something but knows it's not perfect and there are things that can be done better about it, points out what's wrong and how it can be done better, can handle criticism of it and accepts that not everyone likes what they like and can take jokes about the thing they like and joke about it themselves. Fanboys and fangirls on the other hand are just obsessed, think it's perfect and flawless, that nothing has to be done better, dismiss constructive criticism as "haters" out to ruin the thing and their enjoyment of it for them, think them liking it means everyone has to and demand you take what they like 100 percent seriously.
It's people like that, the fanboys, that drove me away from using the mk subreddit, you can't criticize 11 for anything without getting insulted, downvoted, or critcized because god forbid I point out a flaw in one of my favorite franchises. I'm really tired of people bootlicking Netherrealm and it took until 11 for me to start realizing the problems, when they became much more apparent. I'm worried the future of MK will go downhill with all the bad writing and shallow characterization 11 brought us, but people won't point it out enough.

This was my general feeling about the whole "DmC" debacle. I shudder at the thought of even having to relive those dark days.
Sadly that seems to be the problem nowadays. Being able to critique something that you love/like is important. But no, you should kowtow and love it no matter what.
I learned that from Bruce Lee, who was critical of even his own Martial Art, Jeet Kune Do, as he wanted his Art and it's practicioners to grow through constant learning.
Likewise, just because I am very fond of something (I.E. Bloodborne, or perhaps my interest and practice of the Filipino Martial Arts) that doesn't mean I will not open myself to a conversation critiquing either of those.
There's a reason why the yin and yang have two sides to it after all.

I'm no fan of the reboot but I recognize it had good concepts that influenced DMC 5's overall design to make it the masterpiece that it is.
(One of) the main problems I had with the original series is that it was a total mess when it came to platforming. Much of my frustration came from the horrendously tacked on bits of gameplay when you had to make timed jumps around a certain area.
I.E.) The room with blocks in DMC 3, the platforming in Fortuna Castle in DMC 4, etc.
DmC was the exact opposite, pissing on a game because it's not le gamer pizza dante just like when nero rolled in. the game has flaws but people turn a blind eye to DMC doing the exact same shit

I recognize that Nero wasn't as well received when he first came around, and for good reason.
But there are plenty of other reasons to criticize DmC as a game and it's protagonist than his not looking or acting like DMC Dante.
There was animosity coming from both sides of the argument, yes.
But Ninja Theory and their supporters were and are still blatantly tactless and, sad to say, a bit blissfully ignorant about the whole thing.
Here's where I think the issue lies, assumption on your part as you mentioned, and delivery. Rule number one is never assume anything. "It only makes an ass out of u and me," is a common phrase because it's not real communication. Which leads to inevitable misunderstandings and otherwise often avoidable disputes. Your definition of fan for instance. Personally I operate on the original definition given that fan is just slang for fanatic. Coined most notably in response to over enthused fans of celebrities and bands like the Beatles. Screaming so loud that neither they, or the band could even hear the music being played at minimum. Committing murder due to the refusal of an autograph and worst. With that, I generally treat people who call themselves fans in any capacity as a potentially annoying dickhead or psychopath. Stan as you mentioned it is just the name of a song and character from Eminem created as a thinly veiled metaphor for his own rabbid fan base. The misconception with it's usage these days being that because of the character's actions in the song they associate it with insane behavior, and an undying love for a famous person they'd hypothetically live and die for.... But as we established, that's literally all a fan(atic) already is, no subcategories needed.
As far as delivery goes, I think it's one part verbal execution, and another part cultural miscommunication. See one of the things about your videos when you get impassioned or snarkily say "you're fuckin wrong," or "they don't have the intellect," You tend to sound like the typical American super nerd gatekeeper who no one wants to deal with over here. I get that this probably isn't what you're going for because you share a lot of parallels with a lot of the British content and comedy I've consumed that has a lot more of a dry delivery. But a looooooooot of that doesn't translate well, hence the Americanized remakes of shows like The Office with WIDELY different styles of humor. To a lot of people you probably just sound super bitter, pissy, and the jokes are lost. Speaking to my own experience, I had to pause a second and figure out what you were going for when I first discovered your channel. Whether you were being a cheeky dick for laughs, or unironically ChrisChan with a broader vocabulary. Which again isn't your fault, but due to the TH-cam algorithms, you pretty much got popular in the same way that a lot of content creators did being an English speaker in a densely populated non-US city. Aba & Preach, PewDiePie, Filthy Frank, KSI Pyrocynical, Every Frame a Painting, The Closer Look, Super Eyepatch Wolf. All of you have a lot of world wide draw which means attracting viewers with a lot of contrasting sensibilities and potentially even broken English barriers where nuances like sarcasm are already lost. Obliterated when not delivered a certain way. Which is why a lot of TH-camrs end up having to.... adapt, for lack of a better term, or else they tend to keep running into a bunch of backlash.... and even then there still mi(nevitably)ght be backlash.
This reminds me of an old video that "The Archfiend" had posted a while back regarding differences between fans and fanboys.

I don't always agree with what you say but i do respect you having the courage to tell everyone what you really think and sometimes opened my eyes to some of those flaws.
I do think sometimes we have to accept that the writers should take risks with some characters and let them go in a different path( like lui kang going evil as a reminant.)
However they should not reckon a character like sindel and change her backstory that would change the whole character.
I could accept lui kang as a evil reminant because we saw how the event's changed him, therefore he was the same lui kang but this time thing turned out even worse for him.
Sindel on the other hand has her whole backstory changed and pretty much created a whole different character in sindel's skin.

I only liked the fire and ice chapter because of the bond between sub and scorpion and the ending because it's just one person going against three opponents and then kronika. Other than that, the story was awful and some parts was just stupid.
I respect your opinion on this topic. I can understand your anger and frustration with the modern story. Imo I feel that this story was ok minus a few things. I would love for Netherrealm to go back to how they did the stories pre reboot because they took risks. But it seems like they continue to hire writers who don't know the full lore and want to change stuff simply because they can instead of explaining it. But In terms of the reboot stories I liked 11 more than other two because 9 and X were just alternate tellings of 1 to 4 though I do love many of the new characters introduced in them. And I hope that maybe after this the next game has a unique feel to it especially with the whole Liu Kang becoming protector of Earth. I see potential there though maybe I might be foolishly hopeful but hopeful nonetheless
Thanks to YMS, I now approach things differently. To paraphrase him, I went from "This thing is good" to "I really enjoyed it". Makes enjoying/criticizing content much more better looking at things in a grey outlook.

This puts so many things into words I have so long struggled to summarize effectively.
To me, you state a claim you get people who agree with you and then you get fanboys, you just focus on the ones who agree with you

Personally, I see fans as being dedicated to a thing to the point they'll do research on older entries in a series, than perhaps take that into consideration and reassess the quality of the entry that got into the series. Another thing I would count as making someone a fan is loving the characters for more than aesthetic reasons. I'm not saying people can't just love the appearances or gameplay of MK or any other game series, but calling them fans in the same way as people who are well and truly dedicated seems too much. I'd call them "casual fans." It's not much of a separation, I know, but it seems needed nowadays when these same types of open their mouths saying other fans should accept bad content because the former doesn't care about the old stuff, like the fanboys you pointed out. The distinction makes it a bit more clear that maybe these kinds of fans aren't qualified to make statements about the quality of the writing or the deep intricacies of the gameplay.

I honestly love your opinion on the 3D Era of MK. I've heard people on TH-cam who genuine do not like it as if the new timeline and games are just absolutely perfect, and it drives me nuts.
The new games aren't perfect, but on the other hand... It was a return to the OG MK of the 90s, which fixed a lot of the 3D era mess

I was never a Sindel fan, but I agreed that she was handled poorly, since MK9. Even with some of the Earthrealm warriors back, I still hate the fact that she easily killed most of them, in MK9. In the PS2 era games, I really got into the lore, and I even played through MK Mythologies: Sub-Zero, for the story. Then since MK9 I feel like I don't even care anymore
Whole heartidly agree. The one aspect that Netherrealm Studios that has always gotten right is style. There are many "individual" aspects of the franchise at a whole (outside mechanics) that I believe are genuinely intriguing, most particularly the character development of Johnny Cage and to a degree, Kabal and Sonya. IMO, MKX and MK11 are a downgrade from MK9 in terms of what the games offer as a whole. Gameplay, sure, has been unique and interesting, but both MKX and MK11 were such JUMPS in story, both as a whole and for certain character arcs (that includes Johnny, but for some reason, it's more endearing and seems... deserved), and these games both left so much left on the table in terms of what we could've gotten. Is it hard to put more story in with the cinematic they have provided us? Yes, most definitely yes. But is it an excuse to cut corners?
This haopens to anything popular. Some people just can't help but emotionally latch onto a material object owned by a company that doesn't give two shits about them.

As someone who does tend to fangirl over Neatherrealm Mortal Kombat, I can't imagine tearing someone down who doesn't agree with me. I like to hold opinions differing or similar at the same level neither are more "correct".
I'm still trying to learn a lot about the MK stories, both Midway and NRS periods, since at best, I'm a casual fan. But I can tell from your videos that there's a lot of issues in regards to the narratives and stories with the NRS-produced games. Problems that should be considered, critiqued and improved upon. Because there's still a lot of potential in making the world of MK really intriguing and fun, without having to throw out established backgrounds for characters in favour of stale, nonsensical and threadbare ones.
