- I hit a triple whammy on eBay two weeks ago: (1) I accidentally won an auction, (2) for an item I'd wanted for years, (3) with a remarkable life story and the credentials to prove it. This video is me being completely self-indulgent with my particular variety of nerdery, and I appreciate your understanding as we go on this journey together.

Would just like to note that I am aware there are a couple flubs and glitches (lol chroma key fail) which I could maybe fix but am not. I spent this entire video just being unreasonably hyped for this thing and not thinking very hard about what shirt I was wearing or whether I was using the same adjective twice in a row, so the video as is just preserves my exuberance.

😆 I guessed "car commercial" when CRD pointed out the car seeming to pull the semi. (I've seen similar-type scenes in US pickup truck ads.)

I figured it was a commercial with the Sephia pulling a semi. Even though every other car in that scene was 10x more capable of pulling that truck than the Kia. My friend drove his mother's clapped out Sephia in high school and it was a death trap piece of crap. Hell the Ford Econoline could probably actually pull that truck in real life, not up any inclines though.
The fact that it was a production you could actually find really does make that tape one of the coolest things ever.

Really makes you appreciate all the work that goes into a couple dozen seconds of final video. And for what? Did anybody buy a car because it hauled a semi in a commercial? LOL Marketing.... crazy. 😄

The decision for you to not tell us until then that there was a tape in it was the best decision you possibly could have made I cannot even describe to you how much joy you filled me with when I heard that there was a tape in it.

This is without a doubt the coolest thing I've seen for months. I feel nerds in general just enjoy any commercial/industrial/business process/equipment because of the natural curiosity about how object() _really_ works. I could easily watch 50 minutes about industrial brick kilns as long as its detailed and breaks down the process. I suspect you as well get the urge to understand the complete picture of any system you're presented with, even if that information will never be useful to you!

I should've guessed it was a car commercial when they had a shot of the semitruck chained to the car as if being dragged by it. Isn't that kind of a car commercial cliché?
It’s funny, as a camera operator in film and TV, my literal first thought when I saw the one picture from the eBay listing was “Huh, I wonder if that’s from Tyler gyro mounts…” It’s truly amazing that someone left that tape in there, and your explanations of video assist and how film viewfinders work are plenty accurate. Even the last 35mm camera i shot on, an Arricam LT, with an HD video tap still had flicker as you roll the camera (although the flicker settles out to a general “dullness” as the camera comes up to speed, thanks to the video tap’s electronics doing some wizardry).
Oh, my first guess was running the video assist at 24fps capturing one video frame between each 35mm frame, rather than getting a 6Hz beat frequency flicker from mixing 24fps mirror and 30fps video.

19:16 They probably spent days or even weeks setting up that shot, what with the location, the props, the time of day, the color of the ambient light, etc. They wanted to get the shot and didn't want to have to redo it, so he told the FX guy to hold on, landed and got the director to have a look. It's one of those shots you really wouldn't want to have to do multiple takes of.
This video was way cooler than it had any right being. Best "accidental" ebay purchase ever.
That travel case alone makes it a huge bargain!
When I used to live in LA I saw more than one JDM or KDM cars driving around downtown LA followed by camera cars, likely for commercials. It was kind of neat -- but then again, the road closures from TV/Film/Commercial productions ends up just being annoying after a while. :-)

Hey CRD! I'm a pilot, but I've also shot a little bit of air to air photography of aircraft from another aircraft (a Piper Cherokee Six with the aft door off) before, and it's definitely pretty cool. The camera work itself is a tiny part of doing stuff like this, and you have to understand what the pilots are capable of and what they want to avoid. I've learnt the hard way that the 'choreography' really matters in stuff like this and can make the difference between an epic shoot and one that can go horribly wrong. Very cool video, and what an awesome, lucky find.

The Kia Sephia apparently had a long list of "wacky" commercials in the mid 90s. Sometimes it would chase a Honda Civic around for 10,000 miles. Sometimes it would pose as a taxi cab. Maybe this was one of those?

I am loving the completely tangential yet perfectly integrated and completely deadpan roast of traveling sales people. Also that exact thing happened to me the other day, I bid on a very special watch, not terribly expensive, it was a seagull 1963 reproduction. Very very cool watch but not terribly expensive. Regardless, I bid 1333 on it as pretty much a joke like you said, and then the main buyer apparently forfeited andI got it. Nor Lily they cost $170 to $200 and I got a great deal. I made my best efforts to contact him to give it back but got no response so night and now the owner of a super cheap seagull 1963, which is a marvel of engineering of a watch by the way if none of you have ever seen it before.

When you play a tape and press memory the player will put that timestamp in memory. If you rewind the player will only rewind to said timestamp. Let's say you pressed memory at the 5 minute mark. It will rewind to that point and start playing.
Probably nothing that high-tech. Typically you just zero the tape counter at the place you want to return to, then if Memory is on the rewind will stop when the counter reaches zero.

The RF interference appears to be correlated with the voice, suggesting it's an AM radio so could in principle be the helicopters air band radio causing the interference. Camera guy was obviously using a close talk microphone on a headset to get that kind of voice quality in a helicopter.
It could also be a 27 MHz CB radio considering the era, but it would almost certainly have been wired into the helicopters intercom system since he would also need to talk to the pilot through the same headset.
Yeah it looks just like when you view an AM waveform from “above” instead of the usual “from the side” doesn’t it? :D

Yup, and I bet you can often set the punch-in to it, so as the vid plays, it punches in at that exact point. Many studio recorders have the feature.
Man, you are such a great speaker and storyteller. The way you present magnifies the neat backstory of this monitor. I would love to know what my little PVM-8045Q’s backstory was… but without built-in media storage, there’s no way. That’s part of what makes your Combo so neat.

Sealand shipping containers do this. These are hefty 200 sqft boxes designed to bump around on anything from a truck to the worlds largest ships. With convenient doors on the end. Almost everything is shipped in these boxes, including refrigerators. Some even _are_ refrigerators.

I know this isn’t at all the subject of the video but good god JFK is an insane masterpiece. Only Oliver Stone could make a film that is so immaculately crafted, in the dialogue, acting, cinematography, music, etc. that also happens to hinge upon one of the more bizarre JFK conspiracy theories. Love to base my entire movie around convincing the audience that the ultimate proof JFK was murdered by the CIA is that there were two gay guys being gay with each other.

What an incredible tale! Honestly at first I was disappointed that more time wasn't going to be spent on the item it's self, but the story more than makes up for it. Its easy to forget how much effort goes into videos, but that video8 tape is a great reminder of the coordination and cooperation required. What an amazing surprise!
Perhaps the absolute crowning gem of all "tape left in the deck" finds EVER! All I ever get is some family's boring vacations from the 90s!
EVERY time I buy a deck or camcorder this is what i want to find in the slot, and it never happens. It has to happen to someone, and this time it was me, and you better believe I ain't takin it for granted, hahaha. This might be the only time anything like this ever happens to me.

Man, I felt that in my heart. I've had reel to reel units, record players, film projectors, film cameras, clocks, radiation counters (still have that one), oil lamps, radios and a million other things that were never used just to have them sit on a shelf and look pretty and for me to feel crushing guilt for buying things for too much money that I didn't use and feel even more guilt for giving them away for free.
But how boring would life be if we didn't collect beautiful things, but things that once had a purpose.
You can stuff your art where the sun don't shine, old electronic or mechanical junk is a thousand times more beautiful.
Really good engineering is indistinguishable from art, but I say it's much better and way more interesting.
alright, so yes this find is absolutely incredible and you’ve knocked it out of the park with work/content, yeah yeah. however, my biggest takeaway is that it’s, once again, just too easy to get me with “two of them.” 10/10 internet image, masterpiece.
it's the perfect image, really, and there's no bad way to use it.
Not only is that cool in and of itself, but the fact that it actually had that tape in it is awesome!
And holy crap, that Kia commercial is like one of the most late-'80s/early-'90s period thing ever!
And the fact that it was for a quick commercial kind of explains why they just pulled the camera & monitor out of the chopper to put on the chase car; they already paid to rent it and it was there, and they probably didn't have the budget for more than a couple cameras so they had to make the most use of all the ones they had.
5:27 Technicolor / Funai CVC was around 1982. They never work without attention. I have several PAL ones including the combo units, and an NTSC portable here in the UK. They show up on my channel occasionally. It wasn't really the same quality as Video8, running times were shorter and the tapes suffered lots of dropouts.
I got lucky and found my pvm on the side of the road, destined for the land fill...and it is in like new condition!!!

Having owned a 90s Kia, that car would have a difficult time pulling its own weight, let alone the semi truck.
Later models weren't too bad
My buddy's 99 Sephia, had plenty of giddyup. It just lacked refinement. I had a 200k mile Corolla at the same time. I showed him how solid the Corolla was after after all the miles. At idle the shifter was stationary. Idle in the Kia the shifter had Parkinsons. Clutch bite was damn near impossible to get right in the Kia as well, so it was a very jerky ride every shift. Assuming too light of a flywheel. I believe the engine was related to the 4g63 from Mitsubishi. It could almost keep up with my V6 Probe GT when it was stock. Pulling a semi, no way, unless it was downhill. How would the semi's brakes work without a running engine anyway?

we had one of these vcr's hooked up to our oldest refueling tanker in the finnish air force, it was a sisu truck from the late 80's. it was connected to a rear vieving camera and had another channel for the top side of the truck. a funny thing we noticed is that the screen would flicker with the same frequency of the signals when a search radar of an anti air unit fired up.

I LOVE when there’s a tape or some other equivalent in a piece of equipment I buy on eBay. The other day I got a camcorder and there’s a tape of someone’s vacation in China on what appears to be the Yangtze River. This was an exciting story! Getting a glimpse at a profession and the things they care about is so interesting.

Makes me want to pursue dubbing all of yu-yu hakusho to Hi-8 using my buddy's hi-8 deck and making sleeves for all the tapes. A possibility that could have happened but never materialized.

Apparently this is the case and I've just never learned about it! I know my way around a VCR, but never saw that particular feature before.

The Audio was almost definitely intentionally recorded. The interference in the video however was probably just that, interference.
Maybe recording the output from a walkie/radio to the tape, and the interference from the power supply is leaking in?

OMG I've been wanting one of these! I have a collection of Video 8 movie releases I've collected over the years but no way to play them. Next time I go down to my storage unit maybe I'll pull them out bring them home and put them on a shelf maybe that will further motivate me to get one of these. I don't have a lot, as I'd just pick them up every so often when I'd see them at a thrift store and I haven't seen any original release movies on video 8 at a thrift store in years. I think the last one I saw was at a salvation army in 2009 and it was watership sown, that animated rabbit one. Which I already had multiples of so I didn't buy it. For some reason that one is really easy to find. I have no idea why.

I love shit like this. Its the same feeling i get when I buy old reel to reel machines and they have tapes on them! You never know what you are going to find. My fav find still is a synth from 1984 that still had the original owners program cart in it! Had over 100 custom sounds that had been dialed in by whatever artist used it before me and it was a trip going through them all. Great Vid, please keep it up!

yeah SAME, I was certain this would be for some kind of late-model 80s-flavor Broken Arrow action movie and was shocked when it wasn't. a burning truck in a car commercial seems so off-tone!
I'll be honest, I don't quite share your enthusiasm for old video production equipment, but this story was very fun to watch! I especially love the collaborative detective work the Patreon supporters did.

I work with semi trucks as the profession I accidentally fell into. The car pulling the tractor/trailer is actually possible if the air brakes are released and it's a flat surface to pull. We use wheel chocks when the brakes are released so there vehicle we're working on doesn't roll.
