Sad moment. I loved that building. I've never lived in Northampton, but one side of my family descend from there and I used to visit some of my very elder relatives as a kid in the 80's and 90's. For everything negative said about it, I have very fond memories of the place. I can understand the bad side if things, now I'm an adult. But back then, I found it to have such a charm. It was so exciting, entering the dark void of the concourse. And going through to the Grosenor Centre, via the various bridges and subways. I think it was a fantastic building, one of the greatest bus station designs in the country. I know about the problems, the decay, and why it became hated. But that was mostly down to neglect. The functionality of the place was superb, the council should never have let it get in such a state and kept the investment in it. Improved lighting and spruce up, it would have been fit for purpose even today. Probably my fondest memory is how I'd virtually forget that daylight existed whilst in there, and the blinding re-entry from the mouth of hell back into the world.
The offices above were once the new UK headquarters of (Combustion Engineering) CE Lummus. Dad worked for them for years and was based there for a while - I was just a kid when they moved in. Somewhere I've still got the "Welcome to Northampton" pack they gave to all of the employees. Not the most beautiful building but a lot of memories.
It worked better than the one they have now apparently, now there,s progress for you.You can always rely on your council, they are always at a nice steady incompetent level.
I visited Northampton a few times and I experienced Greyfriars Bus Station, and I hated it. It freaked me out BIG TIME, and not many things freak me out. This definitely was The Mouth Of Hell
They should have re done the station. It actually cost them more to demolish, remove and then rebuild the new station then it would have been to fixed up the old one which lord i wish they had done
Great for travelling as it had a coach area,. Now people have to carry heavy luggage further away. There is not enough space for the buses, drivers often have to go to the wrong bay as theirs is often occupied. Glass ceiling on new one is now filthy with bird droppings.
It was always an incredibly ugly building, but it was functional. What are they going to build in it's place? I've long since left Northampton, but I still have family and friends there. I'm guessing they will eventually build apartments.
An ugly building, but aesthetics can always be improved without the need for demolition. The bottom line is that it worked and the new bus station clearly does not.
The very ruined northampton town centre the bus station is way to small should have kept the old bus station it was ugly yes I agree but at least you could catch a bus in the dry / warm
Well, it is a good thing that old bus station has gone for ever and I like the new bus station better, it is so clean and bright by waiting for my bus for home.
Also, it worked so much better than the new one. The current station is just no thanks. The one northampton has now, should have gone to somewhere like Daventry. Such a stupud council! The old station was rlly good for its purpose. Simple. Amd the one we have now is not suitable at all. Even if they were to place a new station back where the old one used to be, that would be better. So far there is nothing there and nothing is what will remain. Such a shame

And with this not only did the bus station come to and end, so did Northampton town centre

0:21 Hold up, I forgot my wallet inside the station, I need to run inside and get it lol
That tree at 0:32 absorbed all that smelly history lol
8 years and still nothing built in its place
The Site has some construction workers but still nothing...

The building falling down is an apt metaphor for David Mackintosh’s political career

Refurbishment would have been a much cheaper option and could have been done a bit at a time.
I was there watching it fall. Absolutely amazing to see. Scary tho. The dust was everywhere.
And in a flash, a part of your past disappears forever.

I got stuck in a lift in that place, once.
tim I can see you're ok
Always liked this station..such a shame
History & memories just gone!
The day northampton died
Yep 😔😔😔😔😔😔
Not really. It was a shit bus station, good it went. Trouble is that they replaced it with something equally as shit, just in a different way!
That new bus station was leaking
It was old, ugly, dirty, stank of piss and it was still miles better than the new bus station.

They actually put in a new bus station. It's a bit shite, and too small, but it's better than the one one.

They should have demolished the building behind it .it's ugly

@@jaysketch2476 I agree. It was warm in the old one.
