  • "Dark Eyebrows, Dark Eyes" by Mikhail Vysotsky performed by John Schneiderman on a Russian guitar. I have been exploring the Russian guitar music of Mikhail Vysotsky recently. His works are almost exclusively theme and variations. I have chosen twenty-one pieces to work on and my colleague Oleg Timofeyev (the world’s leading authority on the Russian guitar) has kindly been coaching me. These are all works in progress and I decided to video some of my attempts.

Bravo for this beautiful performance... This may be my favorite piece by Mikhail Vyssotsky... Unfortunately I can only play the theme since most variations are quite difficult to play... By the way, I thought the second neck would make some basses easier to be played (I am about to by a similar guitar next week in Russia), but I see that you always prefer to play them with the frets... Is it because Vyssotsky played without the extra bass ?

Yes, I tend to play the basses all on the fingerboard.

Not sure but ?? Does he play with NO protruding nails? At least, I don't see a thumbnail.
