Many thanks, James. You have videoed them several times over the years playing this tune, always most tastefully. This short but haunting piece, which was composed by Fletcher Henderson in 1920, is a simple 16-bar melody, played here in the key of B flat and mostly using the three basic chords, though the B flat diminished in the twelfth bar (heard here first at 00:29 and for the last time at 04:57) gives the tune its distinctive poignancy. Shaye's playing is so intelligent, whether in support, ensemble or soloing. Her instruction to her colleagues at 02:18 leads to their backing her with that unusual rhythmic pattern during her beautiful and fluent solo chorus. Aspiring traditional jazz musicians could learn so much from studying this video.
Anyone interested in seeing Shaye in a different element should watch the videos of her and her father Joe playing in a small band for her Mom's new CD release concert......
Hello James! Many thanks for filming Tuba Skinny once again. A great performance. The audio quality is superb. 🎉 I like their performances at the Maison. It seems that the acoustic is even a bit better than at the DBA . Many thanks and I stay tuned for more. Best wishes from Germany Dave 👋
The Maison is a bar/restaurant. I have no special privileges, I can't just stroll around recording blocking other people's view. I am lucky to get the seat at the end of the bar closest to the stage so that you don't have other customers blocking the view you see in my camera. Click this link to see, the stage is by the red curtain at the end of the bar. scontent-atl3-3.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t39.30808-6/255497469_5109624569052306_4276838812689550008_n.jpg?_nc_cat=109&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=127cfc&_nc_ohc=989Vh7M-QC4Q7kNvgHX403y&_nc_zt=23&_nc_ht=scontent-atl3-3.xx&_nc_gid=Al6WV8p1v8zdI86xq6TiQoE&oh=00_AYBMvWjGigB-J7Ov-5xiADqXO5mR36c6qVDcwosIK56RUA&oe=674FAD74
