  • Jazz me blues Hackett 1938
Bobby Hackett and his Dixieland Band. This was part of a show called Saturday Night Swing Club in 1938, usually a presentation of the big bands from that time, but once in a while a jazz band was added as well.
The musicians I recognize in this clip are Bobby Hackett trumpet, Ernie Caceres clarinet, Brad Gowens on the valve trombone and Eddie Condon on the tenor guitar.
If anyone recognizes other musicians, let me know, I can edit the text of this comment.Yes, I've got control.

The clarinetist is my father, Paul J. Ricci. He worked with Bobby Hackett a lot. I happened to stumble on this clip last night on TCM.

Caceres plays with something like Benny Goodman's "youth" style, as BG played around 1930, with Teschmaker's and Pee Wee Russell's influence still audible. He is one of my favorites, both on clarinet and sax. Too bad that his records are so few.

Minor point but someone will jump you for it; Hackett is playing cornet, not trumpet. At least I think he is! :-)

Enjoying your videos very much! When you say it was part of a "show" called Saturday Night Swing Club, clearly you don't mean a television show, since the only place to see television at that time was the 1939 World's Fair. Where was this "show" seen? Was it in movie theaters? Or do you mean it was a weekly live show at a jazz club and someone filmed one of these shows?
