- In mid-June 2020, we went to Otori-ike, located at the foot of Itodake in the Asahi mountain range on the border of Yamagata and Niigata prefectures. It is a favorite place that we have visited many times in the West, as it is a place where you can enjoy nature to the fullest by climbing, fishing, and staying in tents in one trip up to an altitude of about 1,000 meters.
Fishing tickets can be purchased at Ryokan Asahiya (1,050 yen for a one-day pass), located just before the trailhead. It takes about 3.5 hours to reach Otori-ike with tent equipment. After 2 hours along a gentle stream, there is a final ascent.
At Otori-ike Pond, which is also famous for "The Legend of Takitaro" by Sanpei Tsurikichi, we have fished for rock trout and cyprinids with lures, but this time we tried fly-fishing as well. Please watch the video to see how it is done. We also introduce the fly-fishing system.

かなりの大自然なのでアニマルプルーフをしっかりしないと危険そうですね…
地元の方からもクマに注意するよう、よく言われます。
各自、熊鈴と最低でもパーティーに一つは熊スプレーが必須かと思います。役立たないに越したことはないですけどね。
アプローチもそれほど長くはないのですが、ガレ場や沢をいくつもわたるので雨や残雪の状況など下調べはしっかりしていきました。
色々装備や準備は必要になりますが、現場は楽しいですよ～。
