I had to laugh when you said pre-Victorian can get more of a reaction from the general public. I dress medieval, including veils, on the weekends as I do living history. At gas stations, restaurants, etc., I think most people think I’m some kind of unusual nun. No one has ever been remotely mean to me, thankfully.
20:00 I think it's because there's so much photography by this era and there have been Victorian revivals (1970s and the past 10 years it seems) loosely based off this decade. Everyone here wears: leggings, sweats, or jeans. If I wear this one a sleeveless thick(3") strapped dress that goes past my knees with long socks and a long sleeve shirt under the dress I've been mistaken for Amish, 3 times now. I'm sure more think I'm Amish but only 3 talked to me, I'm polite and tell them I'm not. One was a highschooler cashier and his face was so expressive and beaming like a 5 year.. he was so sad when I said I was not Amish, I felt bad. I wasn't rude, he was just "so excited to finally meet one".
The only 'bad' reaction I've come across is when a guy friend of mine (who was wearing a white Medieval outfit) stopped at a gas station, had a pleasant though slightly mystifying conversation with some locals, then realized after he got back into the car that they thought he was going to a local KKK get together. He made a Guinness world book record of stripping off that outfit when he got on site and I think he burned it when he got home.
I mix and match clothes from various eras to suit myself. The retro pieces compliment the contemporary pieces. I started sewing to get the clothes I dreamed about; usually clothes with longer arms and fitted to a rectangular body shape. With that I started taking a few risks with design styles. I was really into Issue Miyake in the 80s. I did sewing here and there but really took off again 18 years ago. That is when I started mixing eras. Nor do I care what folks think 😊
I wear Viking era clothing I'm a man and I wear. Tunic belt and modern pants and boots. I wear tunics belt and pouch and I grew my facial hair and left my hair long. I feel so much happier living in this style and even living similar lifestyle. Just modern twist
amazing video as always! i actually just finished making my first chemise n corset n im hoping to wear it out w a dress i made today so this was nice to see
Older men are funny that way. I get exactly the same reactions and "funny" comments carrying a parasol in the summer (with modern clothing). Btw: will you please show us the brown with cream outfit you were in the thumbnail of this video? It is lovely!
I have the same sensitive stomach issue. And I’m a plus size person, so shape wear was pushed on me, but it was SOOOOOOO uncomfortable! I’ve recently looked into corsets because I also hate bras😂. COMFORT IS PARAMOUNT! I don’t play about being comfy, it keeps me confident as I love through the world
I always inspired and felt facsinated by vintage clothing and after my transition i decided to be a part of my clothing especially Edwardian era 20s 30s and 40s
I was waking through Chicago in the evening a couple of weeks ago and saw someone dressed similarly to how you are here. I did a double take and wondered if it was you (probably just someone with the same hobby!) or if there was a play going on (ha!). She had a hat on, which validates your thought about that being particularly noticeable! I didn’t say anything or linger any more than that. I half thought it was unusual and the other half impressed (most people don’t have that much of “a look,” vintage/historical or otherwise).
I want to start making and wearing historically inspired clothes but will need to start on a budget. Where are some places to buy linen for undergarments reasonably priced? Also, are there different qualities of linen? Which is best for making undergarments? Thank you in advance for responding!
There are many qualities and honestly most of it would be considered low quality in the past. As for were to buy it depends on were in the world you are situated but for underwear definitely a specialty shop online not your big chain fabric store, it'll be cheaper and better quality. And if you can find thifted bed linens those are excellent
Ikea (at least where I live) has white linen bedsheets and while those are definitely more expensive than thrifted ones you pay less per square meter than you would at the fabric store. I have made four 18th century men's shirts out of that so far and it worked really well for that; I also have enough fabric left for at least two more (I bought the biggest size they had). While it is not the highest quality linen you could find, it works absolutely fine and is quite nice for hand sewing. For the different qualities: the longer the individual fibres, the nicer the fabric will be and the less it will wrinkle
If I were to ever dress historically or historybound, I'd probably choose medieval, maybe 12th to 14th century France. You know, the typical "medieval princesss" clothing. I just love that look. It wouldn't even look too out there, if I don't do the 10ft trains, and sleeves down to the floor.
I love your videos so much! You are so fashionable and knowledgeable. I recently found your channel and have been binging all of your videos. Thanks for all the work you put into things!
I just found your channel and have subscribed. I follow many historical dressing women, my favs are SnappyDragon and Bernadette Banner. I wear my hair up in Victorian or Edwardian styles most of the time. Someday I hope I can see myself a few dresses. The
I thoroughly enjoy your videos and all the knowledge you share. but I absolutely love how much your personality is shown in this video! and I agree 💯 with the good feet!! lol
I don't really have metal bones in mine but the busk and the grommets do set off the alarms, they just feel it and once they realize it's a corset let me through.
I enjoyed this video. I understand what you're talking about. Most people assume I'm a Jehovah Witness or whatever because I prefer to dress modestly. I don't mind. I enjoy making my own clothes and wearing clothing from multiple decades.

Yeah people equate veils with nuns and caps with amish 😅

Awesome! Yeah that's one of the best things about wearing different eras, we can go as accurate or inaccurate as we want to, there are no rules!
@@sewthroughtime I love having some modern conveniences with my retro clothes.

Exactly! Honestly a well fitting corset is the most comfortable especially if you have a heavier bust
I dress up on Saturday’s for fun. It turns heads yes, but mostly it is with smiles and compliments
I always inspired and felt facsinated by vintage clothing and after my transition i decided to be a part of my clothing especially Edwardian era 20s 30s and 40s
❤️❤️❤️❤️ that's awesome
@@sewthroughtime it sure is and soon enough I get compliments like I get out of a vintage movie etc

Have u ever fly with a corset? I wonder how security would take the clothes specially the metal bones!
I don't really have metal bones in mine but the busk and the grommets do set off the alarms, they just feel it and once they realize it's a corset let me through.

That both ammuses and horrifies me! I used to be a Jehovah's Witness and would hate for people to think I was one!
@vivianbeckford3084 I understand. However, the JWs that I've met have been very nice people so I don't mind.
