This is totally unrelated, but wanted to let you know that I like your new hair style! I had been noticing it getting longer and longer and you styling it a bit different - It looks great on you! I do love the Tempo dress variation with the sleeve.
Wonderful video, even if it included some things that didn't work out (makes you more relatable to the rest of us, though 😁!) . Hearing you talk through everything is a big help as your viewers learn a lot. Love your fabric and pattern choices - they are so pretty and fun!
I appreciate you being mindful of not triggering anyone when talking about health/fitness. As sewers we obviously have to think about our bodies and fit, but I’ve had to unsubscribe to some individuals that are constantly talking about weight loss and making things small to fit into later. I want to sew not hear about all that when my hobby is meant to distract me from other things so thank you! I also love you saying you’re working out for your old lady body in the future lol!
The plaid dress is stunning and the perfect colors for you ... bummer it didn't work out. Thanks for sharing, it's very relatable that we all have those days!
Excellent pattern matching on Vivi dress. Thank you for sharing fit fails. It happens to all of us. It’s a beautiful dress. Love your Rhapsody blouse fabric with cute skirt.
Just this video brought me a ton of good sew-jo. I hav dreamt of a Briarwood dress and I am happy to hear it can be done. I think your new hairstyle compliments you both visually and emotionally.
You could wear a tank top underneath the dress and leave the top part unbuttoned. I have done that. when you accessorize it it looks like it was meant to be.
The Vivi dress/blouse --- you are an evil enabler and I went and bought it. I have this wonderful blue and green plaid shirt fabric from Mood I have been sitting on. Now I think you have convinced me to make this out of that fabric. Thanks for all the tips to check, Today I am making the SA Nova without a muslin, but I took dresses out of my closet and measured what I like my fit in that type of fabric. I will do the same with this pattern, as I have a wonderful button up shirt dress that fits well. As always, love your videos. So, I have to tell you some thing funny --- or encouraging. If you cut your hair, dyed it black, I think you could pass for Liza Minnelli!! Can you sing and dance????💋💋💋
Love the dresses .. as for fails ... I made a beautiful white cotton shirt and washed it .. oops .. it shrunk then I realised why .. I made the shirt from the piece of fabric that I hadn't prewashed yet .. very smart! But it fits a friend 🎉
I had to pause the video when you were holding up the striped cotton. when I came back my first thought was it would make really cute bias binding. Then I started the video back up, and that’s what you are planning 😂
I really like how your Tempo dress turned out, and I think it's even better without the lace inserts. The plaid dress is adorable...so sorry it doesn't fit right now.
Thanks for showing us the fails too. (I mean…. your fails are still wins 😂) but it is good to help us see that you aren’t always utterly perfect 🤩. Thanks for avoiding negative body talk stuff too. Super important for those of us that spend a lot of time behind the sewing machine that we could spend in the gym 😂
It's my pleasure! I am very much against the negative body talk stuff, mostly for my own mental health, but also for those that are watching. It can be so toxic and the reason we sew is to help us love these bodies we've blessed with, not make them fit into a piece of clothing (we make the clothing fit us!).
Can you wear your plaid dress unbuttoned above the waist with a tank top underneath? It is a great looking dress and I want for you to be able to wear it.
I so appreciate this video. I cut two left side front bodice for a wrap top I was making and had no extra fabric. My mom (who also sews) suggested that I get another solid piece and do color blocking. Problem solved 😊 Blessings.
😂 sorry, I just did a Pattern Scott pattern, the vest, love the pattern, but it was too small. Like you I needed the next size up. I got lucky because it is a vest I added a 1inch strip down the side and now it fits great. No gaps at the armhole, which is an issue with sleeveless tops. Anyway time to update your pattern fitting guide. I also had the same issue with the Sew House 7 skyline tee. I can wear it, but the next one will be a size large. We get so used to pattern companies cutting with a lot of ease when we sew something that fits, we forget.
Thank you so much for sharing the fail(s). Nothing kills sew-jo like a fail! Please share your swimsuit top journey! At least share the patterns and what worked and what didn't. For a Breton top, check out the Sinclair Patterns Adele top. The neckline is beautiful. It has become my tnt pattern for striped knit tops. Thank you for sharing your "oops!" with us. We all make them. I just made a pair of shorts and I also forgot to check for the amount of ease, but fortunately it came out okay. Your dresses are beautiful! For the orange plaid one, is there any chance placing a gusset of some type in the back would help? I know it's probably not the best option but just wondered if it might allow a little more space to wear it.
Although you, too, sometimes have struggles with sewing/fitting, somehow you always pull off a great make. The fabric of the LN dress is really pretty.
Thank you for video - weirdly gratifying that even the great Whitney makes fails. The Tempo is cute and summery. Opinion on sleeves: I am small and puffed sleeves look too “ precious “ on me, so I am always on the lookout for sleeve interest without gathers at shoulder - making Nepheline blouse now - statement sleeve with flat shoulder.
I was going to tell you that I am enjoying my projector sewing sooo much! I cut out a t-shirt today and it was so easy and fun! Anyway, when you were talking about cutting some bias tape from your striped fabric, it occurred to me that I could make a file that had bias lines on it in whatever width I wanted and use it to project directly onto fabric. No more hoping my ruler doesn’t shift as I am cutting. If that kind of file would be difficult for you to manage, let me know as I could send you one. It’s an easy make and I’d be happy to send it to you if you think it would be as helpful as I’m imagining.
This video is fantastic for me. I have had these exact sewing moments. I try a pattern and I work so hard on finishing everything nicely, and I put it on, and it doesn't fit, or it looks weird. Or, I make goofy mistakes because I am rushing. Those things have made me lose my sewjo ! Especially when it's a few projects in a row. I am trying really hard to figure out the silhouettes that I feel comfortable in. Just because I think an outfit is cute, doesn't mean it's a good fit for my body. And that's ok. Mistakes help me learn. Thank you for your honesty, Whitney. It is so powerful for other sewists to hear about the projects that don't work too. Happy sewing!
My daughter has the same problem with bathing suit tops so hopefully you find something and let us know what the pattern is. My daughter is a DD but an XS. All the bathing suits they sell they don't do the DD until like size 16 or something.
Both dresses a beautiful. The LN sleeves look great on the dress and on you. I hope the plaid dress works out too. I'm excited to see how the new fabrics come together. I love a nice eyelet and I'm interested in seeing what you think of the t-shirt pattern. Good luck with the swimsuit top!
You're right, the insertion lace looks GREAT on the video. Darn. No you have me wondering if I should scrap it too. I've been waiting for your version so I can decide what I thought.
@@TomKatStitchery Too be honest I'm not sure the style of top would look that good on me. But I want to try it to learn the technique and then find ways to use it with different tops. I think that is one of the big reasons why I wanted to see yours to see what I thought about the top - in general.
Patterns for Pirates or Made for Mermaids (I can never remember which) has a boat neck shirt for knits. It is the Pepper if you need another option because of the stretch.
I am so grateful for you sharing even the fails. I made a T-shirt last weekend, should have been simple- I made it before and that version fits….nope somehow it’s about 2 sizes too small😂
Insertion lace is an heirloom sewing technique. Heirloom sewing by machine can be easy enough but it is definitely its own skill set....love the final product that dress is wonderful
the plaid dress looks lovely - do you have any spare fabric ? if so could you do a shirred panel insert in the back? cut the back into 3 sections like princess seams and for the centre panel substitute a shirred panel.
If I just don’t feel like sewing, I sew for others. Even hemming pants and tailoring their clothes to fit them better helps. Their appreciation that they can wear clothes for the first time, or again boosts me up.
I enjoyed this video and your sharing the different types of fabric and sewing pattern ideas that you will use. I also love that you list the patterns in the description! Thank you
Great video! I truly appreciate your transparency and willingness to share your whole sewing journey. Also, really appreciate the fabric-as-bias tape idea! ❤
Thank you for showing us that a fail is not the end of the world and that you would donate if it doesn’t work out. I have had several projects that don’t work out, mainly due to my ocd and perfection complex! 😳. My daughter volunteers regularly at a clothing store for women who are victims of domestic violence or women entering the work force and don’t have suitable clothing. She now culls my donation box before I move things out for useful items for this shop.
Love the tempo dress. I’m sticking together a pattern for a grandad collar shirt but boy sized. I have never seen a male shirt before or a grandad collar so fingers crossed it will not be a fail!
I get it. Sometimes things have to be reworked. I have the Vogue button up blouse in a muslin on my table. Sorting out a car accident this week, so probably no sewing until next week.
Love the orange fabric! Looking forward to seeing the finished dress in that. Fingers crossed the Pattern Scout Vivi Shirtdress will fit you by the end of summer. I've just finished a teal T-shirt with a V-neck (large busted lady here too!) The rest of my summer sewing will have to wait because I'll be on holiday for the next two weeks! I will take my knitting project with me though: I've only recently started knitting again for the first time in 40 years.
I think I used that bias tape cotton to make boxer shorts for my 6’ 7” son. The store bought ones that fit his narrow waist were obscenely short on his frame. I love your completed dresses & I know just how you feel with the fails. With all the best intentions, it doesn’t turn out sometimes.
Love your dresses and your fabrics. I’ve started dieting & exercising more myself. I’m both diabetic & hypothyroidism. So far I’ve lost just a couple of pounds but that’s a start. I’m just about finished making my first leg of the Bootstrap pants form. Once you get past interfacing the fabric, cutting out all the pieces, and labeling each piece it’s not too bad. I got a little confused on the lower leg but finally got it. I’m tickled pink all my seams are matching up both vertically and horizontally. Still have quite a bit of work to do on it.
For many months, I wanted to work with a Style ARC pattern so... ...I have in my hand, my first Style ARC pattern!!!!! The Hope Woven Dress AND the Hope Extension Pack. Let this fun begin. I envision this dress with so many options. I might even try this pattern in a boucle for the coming Autumn. I feel like a mad scientist--hahaha.... Have a beautiful day, playing.
I love both dresses! Too bad about the plaid dress. I’m all too familiar with this type of error! 😮 I’m in the middle of a linen Itch to Stitch Celeste. It’s been on my list since you tested the pattern 3 years ago. I’m excited I’ve finally gotten to it!
Beautiful makes! I follow a lady that designs patterns for Styla Patterns she just released her St Tropez suite that if I was 40 years younger I would of liked . maybe she would like that
Would your daughter like the Cali from Green Style. It might be too old fashioned for her, but I think it's cute. I'm wanting to try and make it. I also wanted to know the pattern name for the dress you made from that Tokyo City fabric? Also the pattern name for the tiered dress you made in oranges (I think). It might have been different fabric's but close in color...maybe Kaffe fabric...I just remember thinking I needed to write it down and didn't. Saw you in it at University of Sewing, you were doing a class/talk.
Insertion lace. Ah, yes, it brings to mind my classes in heirloom sewing. I'm wondering if the lace problem has to do with the fabric because usually lace is inserted on fabric with less drape to it. Fabric with more drape might need more support beneath it such as tissue paper. The results for wearing might not have been ideal either since fabric with lots of drape wouldn't "follow" along with what the lace would do meaning the garment might not have flowed over the body properly. Matching up lace to a fabric can be tricky business but it's lots of fun trying.
These are great points and make me feel so much better 😂. You're right about the fabric choice. While I haven't done any lace insertion, now that you mention it, I also haven't seen any lace insertion garments on fabric with drape. I might try it again on a linen or cotton lawn/batiste. I have done very little heirloom sewing (just some smocking when my kids were little), but it could be fun to incorporate some into my wardrobe in small doses!
That is so too bad about the Vivi dress. It is beautiful. I love the colours and the Madras like print. Nice to know we all have the occasional fail. Not fun, but❤️❤️❤️
I’ve got a tiny underbust and a large bust. I wear 30HH-32H I’ve had some luck buying bathing suits at lingerie stores; the same stores where I can find bras that fit, not the chain stores. They’re expensive but it’s worth it to be comfortable in a bathing suit, in my opinion.
You sound just like my daughter! We just had her fit and bought her some VERY expensive bras at a lingerie shop close by. I know they sell swimwear as well so it's probably worth a look!
Hi Whitney - Sorry to hear about your low-sew-jo. It just stink sometimes when the garment doesn't work out. I believe you did a big favor to the newer sewists who watch your channel by making (and posting) this video. If I recall correctly, the rule is for every garment that doesn't work out, you are supposed to purchase fabric for two more. Thanks for a great video.
I don't know that that would be my fabric of choice. While you could totally do it in chiffon, it would be very see through so you would have to wear a slip. I would also be worried about the fabric not being strong enough at the waistband.
@@TomKatStitchery Thank you, that is a very good point and the finish would also be hard to make it look nice I expect. I’m being to adventurous for beginner 😁
Hi Whitney, I’m trying to get my sew-Jo back by challenging myself to sew Chiffon. Crazy as I never sewed anything this fine. What love notions dress pattern would recommend?
I certainly understand body fluctuation. I have been deciding on how to have the same garment work for ranging sizes. Your pretty orange plaid dress...judt alter it on the sides. It is too pretty to not wear.
When you make bias tape from old silk ties, do you pre-wash the ties? I have started cutting up a bunch of ties and I did not pre-wash them so now I am worried that when I use the bias tape in a project the first washing will ruin it.
I do prewash the ties before I cut them. I'm not worried about shrinkage with the ties, but I do worry about colors running. Silk almost always bleeds when it hasn't been prewashed. I would try putting what you've already cut into lingerie bags and running them through the wash!
What size bias tape do you usually cut out of your scrap cotton fabric? I have a hard time deciding if I should cut 1", 1.5" or 2" strips (I also like to batch cut continuous bias tape out of fun remnants I find at fabric shops). Do you find one size more ubiquitous in patterns than others?
I am turning 80 in July and making some vibrant table cloths for the tables. 5 with some broderie and all white 5 with super vibrant colors. I am happy. We are having a nice party.
The plaid dress would be a great skirt.
Yes! Or a skirt/top combo. Although I’d love it as a dress, skirt, top, or summer pants.
It would!!

I hope you love it as much as I do!
Use the plaid dress, open, as a topper.
That's a good idea!
That is so too bad about the Vivi dress. It is beautiful. I love the colours and the Madras like print.
Nice to know we all have the occasional fail. Not fun, but❤️❤️❤️
We ALL make mistakes!
Do you have extra fabric for the plaid dress? I do alterations for a living and would just add extra fabric to the side seams.
That could work, thanks for the tip!
I hadn't heard of this rule but I will be sure to abide by it from here on out! Thank you for the kind words
Thank you for your help. Could I do a caprice skirt with chiffon?
I don't know that that would be my fabric of choice. While you could totally do it in chiffon, it would be very see through so you would have to wear a slip. I would also be worried about the fabric not being strong enough at the waistband.
@@TomKatStitchery Thank you, that is a very good point and the finish would also be hard to make it look nice I expect. I’m being to adventurous for beginner 😁
Loved this! What width t m you make your bias tape?
I make mine 1/2" single fold so I cut my strips a bit larger than 1".
What if you made a tank top and shorts in a knit that coordinates with the dress, and then wore the dress open over the set like a duster?
great idea!
Someone suggested you could wear a tank under the dress & leave it open.
I could!
Hi Whitney, I’m trying to get my sew-Jo back by challenging myself to sew Chiffon. Crazy as I never sewed anything this fine. What love notions dress pattern would recommend?
The Harmony Top or Rhapsody blouse would both be lovely in a chiffon! You would need to wear a tank or cami underneath, but they would be lovely!
I certainly understand body fluctuation. I have been deciding on how to have the same garment work for ranging sizes. Your pretty orange plaid dress...judt alter it on the sides. It is too pretty to not wear.
Elastic back on pants are a game changer!
Love the plaid dress. How about a minimizer?
Thanks for the tip!
I find that I use 1/2" single fold the most. I like to cut my strips 1 1/8" as I find that's a better width for my bias tape maker.
Wear a tank top under the orange plaid dress and leave the bodice open.
I could do that~
What a shame tgathe gorgeous plaid dress doesn't fit. I feel your pain😊
These things happen.
TH-cam will NOT allow me to SMASH LIKE button.

I have no idea why, but when you said May Destashify Makes, I heard Dismay Makes. 😅
Oh no!
No! Don’t deface your machine with stickers! 😅 unless they’re clings.
There's always double stick tape!
I am turning 80 in July and making some vibrant table cloths for the tables. 5 with some broderie and all white 5 with super vibrant colors. I am happy. We are having a nice party.
That sounds beautiful! Happy Early Birthday to you!
Wear shoes in the house.😢
I should!
What? Surely you hear! I try but never make it for long.
Have you tried Keto diet? Dr Eric Westman
