    Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

    I was a graphic arts major in college HELLA days ago (early to mid-80s), but I never picked up oil paints. I recently had to make some decisions for my mental health and realized I've never worked with oils, so I got to searching a few weeks ago. YOUR videos gave me the confidence to dip my toe into the oily waters, so to speak.
    I still haven't picked up a brush yet (need that all-important ventilation installed first, and I'm working on my super rusty rendering skills) but every time I watch your videos I feel even more confident, even if it's just giving myself permission to royally fuck it all up.

    Thank you for this video! The past few days I’ve searched for something exactly like this! It’s nice to have a starting point, some kind of guide with bullet points to keep in mind when starting out and being overwhelmed by everything. I would love to paint along with you with one simpler video demonstration for beginners one day! 💗

    i had no problem withdrawing the tomatoes. right size, big brush, squint, a paper cut is helpful, book ordered. the behavior of paint on canvas, time short painting, form, value, light sources, 3 D not flat, shape value=3D, value take a picture black and white, what is darker, underpainting, sky lightest value, tree, bushes, houses. color: how to darken "color mixing video" light sources, changing direction, reflection, portrait especially.

    One tip I was given was to take your image and put it in grayscale (b&w) and then use odd colors to paint your study.
    Purple barn with orange sky and black clouds and grey grasses.
    Blue apple with pink leaves
    Orange mountainside with purple sunset, etc.
    Forces you to understand value

    I love these videos! My only concern is whether to start with doing this, or should I learn to draw first. I don’t want to start painting and they turn out bad because of the composition, but I also don’t know how well I need to draw before I can start painting. If that makes any sense...

    Hey paint coach! Question, I've learned so far, that one should not use more than one medium in a painting. So if one starts out with linseed oil, stick to linseed oil. When using small amounts of liquin(original), stick to liquin.. But if I am more or less done painting, and want to lightly glaze certain area's, on a linseed medium based painting, is it really best to delude my paint just with linseed, or can I also ad a little liquin for faster drying and making the paint a little less runny?
    Thanks for any answer👍

    Hi Chris. Can you try the medium gouche. I want to know how you approach this medium. I see all of the art videos using this medium. I bought one cause i think you can aproach like oil and its much cheaper. But when i finally tried it its so hard. Hopefully someday you can try this medium as well and you can share your wisdom about it. Your the best at giving painting advices for a beginner like me .Thanks for sharing your knowledge to everyone for free.Keep safe Chris💜

    • @DianaMaggard
      @DianaMaggard 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gouache is more like watercolor meets acrylic. Start with your lights and work toward the darks. Try to keep your whites white, it’s easier than adding white gouache at the end.

    How do you clean your brush before getting a new color

    • @NatashaB000
      @NatashaB000 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You use paper towels or. Solvents

    • @atelier_nona
      @atelier_nona 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      He said in another video, that he rarely cleans them at all. I assume he uses more than one brush per painting session. Many people do that, so one for lighter colors and a second brush for the dark ones, to not get the light colors dirty or muddy.
