Is it just me or does it feel like I’m watching a totally different fight from the commentators... I saw a cat on a totally different level pick t’other apart in spectacular fashion.
This the most "Normal" I've ever seen him fight. It just goes to show he was a solid fighter even without the crazy feints and angles that kept his opponents off balance. Absolutely the most unique boxer ever.
Emanuel was always at a disadvantage. He traveled to fighters took on any and everyone in short notice. Referees , score cards and boxers cheated him. Emanuel made little to no money for the amount of fighting he did. none of that stopped Emanuel from putting on a show every single fight.
Actually Emanuel did okay money wise, not what he deserved, but ESPN got him a lot of bouts.. and he fought steady, he lived very simply, and gave most of his money to his family and to people less fortunate than him.. good humble guy all around..
At around 11:20 in or so, the commentators remark regarding Emmanuel was spot on.....I really think that "The Drunken Master" was 100% pure warrior to the core, and fought for the actual reality, and not the "record", etc..... It's no doubt that the lad is an absolutely massive underground attraction, and couldn't resist the chance to roll the dice on the shortest possible notice, basically... Emmanuel Augustus Burton, "The Drunken Master" was among the most incredible Boxers of all time. He is an absolute reality; as real as it gets. Max respect.

He was and Thaxton made the stupid mistake by trying to knock Burton out in 1st round. Thaxton had a long lay off, he would have looked at Burton's bad record and thought he was a bum and wanted to make a statement

Not so much---- One of Burton's best, love the guy, but so many times he just pisses off the home crowd, the referee, the judges and the commentators... so many upon seeing an artist at work only see a clown laughing at them... but kudos to the guy for marching to his own beat and being an entertainer with real sharp skills... with that peculiar blend of defense and offence, and, err, breakdancing, it's not that he wasn't already a nightmare style-wise with a good chin... and it's not like he doesn't commit to his punches either, because this guy really knows how to dig, but if only he had a little more pop... then he would've been an outright terror ! Good timing by the referee on the stoppage too...

They must've bought his ranking, which definitely was a thing back then still (King did it all the time for some of his fighters, Arum probably did also), because no way he was a legitimate #1 contender. Yes, Burton was a very solid fighter and his record doesn't reflect that. But because of the way he chose to fight and taking fights on quick notice etc. he was never going to be more than a gate keeper, which he was very good at. But if Burton can so effortlessly pick him apart (despite styles making fights, that's only one part of a fight, albeit a major one), then there's no way he did shit to legitimately earn that ranking.
