Mrs Bennet: ‘My husband does not understand the gravity of the situation.’ Mr Bennet from Pride and Prejudice: ‘An unhappy alternative is before you, Elizabeth. From this day you must be a stranger to one of your parents. Your mother will never see you again if you do not marry Mr Collins, and I will never see you again if you do.’
Speaking of you thanking us for still being here: thank you for taking us on this journey (again)! Most of us binge watched the show, and it's really fun to see the story unfold little by little - to have a better sense of the passage of time in LBD
It really does make sense for Mrs Bennet to be obsessed about Lizzie getting a job. Especially since she likely knows that Lizzie isn’t interested in getting a husband to provide financial stability and while that’s the goal, Lizzie getting a job is a close second and she just saw her daughter turn down a chance to gain that financial stability. It must rub Mrs Bennet the wrong way to see her daughter turn down that chance when that’s what she needed at the moment. Not that Lizzie should have taken that position. It would have hurt her more in the long run. But I don’t think Mrs Bennet knew that.
For me, the post 2008 economy paired with your parents' own panic about money really reminds me of what it was like. For a few years there, you just took whatever job you could get. I think people watching with that mindset are the ones who thought you should have taken the job. I was a little older than Lizzie was when these came out working at Starbucks after graduating from college and would have taken the offer if it were real life.
I'm not surprised Laura was mistaken for Ariel at Disneyland haha I love her hair and hairband look in this episode. I think it probably is the only episode where Lizzie introduces it as one of her characters, but I guess we'll find out as we watch more!
Every time I'm obsessed with Laura's eyeliner in this episode. And that little "I know ;) you too :)" from Charlotte is like a little jerk at your heartstrings before it gets ripped out, knowing what Charlotte's planning in the next episode
"I'm sorry, Lizzie, you deserve unconditional love and acceptance." Thanks Ashley I needed that :) and also thank you subtitler for reminding me that that goes for me too
I'm a bit crushed I didn't catch the Look Back Diaries when they started! TH-cam recommended it after a rewatch of the Lizzie Bennet Diaries, and it's been so fun to bask in how much LBD meant to so many of us, even if not in real time with you!
I remember being on Tumblr at this time and #LBD being a 50/50 shot for Lizzie Bennet Diaries fandom or Little Black Dress pictures... before the fandom took it over!! The interactions between cast and fans was amazing and so much fun! I really loved that Ashley had so many questions about it that she shared where her outfits came from every episode XD.
As to the concept of having a costume-theatre version of a character address the audience, as that character, saying hypothetical things... I think you're right; off the top of my head, I think this is the only time that happens. However, in one of the final episodes, Lizzie finds herself alone when she needs the support of her loved ones, so she puts on costumes of her friends and family, and says the hypothetical things she assumes her friends would say to her. So, that's not exactly the same, but it's close.
I don’t know why people Had any issue with Lizzie being biased or not being all about the truth… Lizzie is not a news journalist there. Everyone on the planet when they talk to one person about another person, aka gossiping, they describe this person from their point of view. Everyone talks about their points of view.
This is such a sweet episode. I think it’s the 1st 1 that makes me a little teary (at the end, half b/c of what’s coming, but half just b/c of all the BFF/sisterly love). A great balance of Lizzie being strong/annoyed/hilarious & also tender/appreciative of the people in her life
Honestly Mrs. Bennet kinda has a point in this episode. Lizzie is 24 years old, living in her parents' house, and not bringing in any income for herself or her family when she is well aware of the family's financial difficulties. It's one thing to marry someone horrible like in the book, but I think it's different to take a job you aren't passionate about to build your resume and make some income. You don't have to stay in one job for your whole life.
She did have to quit her almost finished studies for this job, so the job would probably lessen her resume. Not passionate is also weakly put, she hates the concept and can't stand listening to he (would be) boss. Taking the job did make sence for Charlotte, it didn't for Lizzie (she would not have lasted very long if she would have taken it)
She would also have had to give up her degree, which was what all this sacrifice was for. As Collins points out in the previous episode, the degree gives a leg up on building a career in the long run. So it's a short-term pain for long term gain plan, which I'm pretty sure Mr. Bennett is on board with. And what is the source of the family difficulties? Could it be Mrs. Bennett?
Yeah, as others have said, we’re ignoring the value of an advanced degree (statistically more likely to lead to higher income) with the double hit of still having student loans regardless. Also, I’ve clearly followed the “passion over security” path so I’m biased, but I’m alarmed by how many people are telling Lizzie to just give up on her dreams and take a job with someone who has demeaned her publicly. We’re in dire straights when even the young people have no idealistic hope.
This arc is reminding me of the real panic that some fans (including myself) had because the Mr Collins wasn't a marriage proposal that Darcy would also not be a marriage proposal/romantic proposal
“I’d like to offer you a job at Pemberley Digital!” 😂 Would’ve been a very different show. But the truth is that Collins is making a business proposal in P&P, while Darcy and Lizzy are a love story.
does the episode with darcy doing costume theatre count as a "costume character" vlogging /and/ reenacting? because when hes "being" fitz, hes mimicking how fitz interacted with the camera/audience?
I must say that I watch this intro of this episode on repeat at leas 6x every re-watch because I mean Lizzie's performance of Mrs. Bennet is just Oscar-worthy I mean *cough* of course Ashley's performance on acting Lizzie acting like her mother. I really forget sometimes (let's be honest, most of the times) that Lizzie is not a real person in this diaries.
I remember in times like these googling Ashley's experience and going "how did she learn to be so good!" And looking over her school experience and resume. Granted this was in my period of "do I go into a performing art as a career?" Phase so it was normal for me at the time... not stalkery I promise
I always found people's engagement with the Collins episodes a little depressing. Like they laud Charlotte as a hard headed pragmatist (and I love Charlotte, don't get me wrong), but they tend to take this very Mama Bennet approach towards Lizzie. They say things like "your feelings are not important. Grow up and make the hard decisions." And these are people younger then Lizzie. Their lives must be miserable.
It’s much easier to judge others than to self reflect. That’s what Lizzie does, after all. And ironically, they don’t even really mean it! They don’t actually wish Lizzie had taken that job, because then they wouldn’t have gotten the rest of the story.

This! I’ve never watched it in real time before. They had to wait so long to see Darcy 😮
I had the aaaaagony of watching in real time and lemme tell you it was so painful 😂
@@thewordshifter I shudder to think!
Exactly it was real suspense even when I was binge watching it. So I cannot imagine the pain waiting for Darcy so long.

Misguided but well meaning: A Mrs Bennet story
@@TheAshleyClements honestly. Even in the original P&P, she was misguided but well-meaning.
