  • Rick of The Luminary Shoppe has decided to retire and has agreed to place some of his lamps and equipment into the gift store we are remodeling, so he will remain a part of Joliet's history. So we're taking a quick tour through his shop and will show the progress on the gift store. Thanks for coming along!
Check out his videos at The Luminary Shoppe here on TH-cam

I was always a real pleasure watching Rick building, repairing and restoring those beautiful lamps. A real shame he won't be doing any more but he certainly has earned, and deserves, a happy retirement. Thanks Rick, for many happy memories. And as someone else mentioned here, Dave and Rick, a pair of real craftsmen.

To you and Rick, we are in a different era where computers have taken over. I am completely different than you fellows, millwright. I have tried to pass on the knowledge I have accumulated but people don't want to work with their hands anymore, very sad. They seem convinced that they know everything already. I tried to create some interest in basic knot tying but the so called sailors had zero interest, after all, they can make up their own knots on the spot. Im in an area that they have outlawed plastic grocery bags but if I want to replace the switch on an otherwise perfectly good Dewalt drill , they price the switch at 10 dollars less then a brand new drill. So what choice do you have but to dispose of the drill entirely. This is just a small example of a larger trend that makes little sense to me. Emotions run high regarding conservation yet we have created a throw away culture.

Redirect your talents to something new, something you have wanted to do for awhile. You think now that you are retired you can sleep late, watch TV take naps etc.,but at least take walks and be active! It’s been shown retirees don’t live nearly as long as those who are still up and doing things every day! I’m sure you will slow down some, that’s to expected, just don’t stop. Enough of my ranting. I get you need to retire and shut your shop down, but you will be missed. When you do the kind of work you and Dave and a handful of others do and no one to carry on what you do after you’re gone, it hurts to know no one is gonna continue your work.thank you for your work!

I'm a retired carpenter and worked with a partner who was a third generation carpenter. Together, we had 80ish years of carpenter experience. We looked for one or two people to apprentice under us so we could pass on knowledge and teach skills. Over the years we had only one young man want to learn, but he only stayed for one summer. I am more of a framing carpenter with plumbing, roofing and siding certifications as well as business and project management. My partner was more of a finish carpenter with flooring, electrical and code enforcement experience so our skill sets offset to make us a very well rounded construction company. So much trade skill and knowledge is being lost at a very fast pace, it's a sad world we live in.

I understand completely the emotion of closing down a business that ends an era. My Dad spent 69 years as a radio and later radio and TV repairman in a small town in NW Iowa. He was known as a man that could repair anything electronic. He never retired and went to work at 90 years old on the last day of his life. When we cleared out his shop I felt horrible watching a lifetime of equipment and experience vanish. Like Rick, no one wanted the business. The auctioneer that specialized in closing electronic business said, "you Dad was one of less than a dozen repairmen in the US that had a full time repair shop, and we'll not see anyone take over to run a shop like that again." So the emotion in those last minutes of this video tug at my heart as I know how that feels. Good luck to Rick and we look forward to seeing the shop you are working on, perhaps next year when we travel to Philipsburg, MT to visit out sons.

As you likely know, there is a huge amount of disposable cash in the country. The trick is tapping into it.
May I suggest yachts. Owners not necessarily 'rich' but looking for that particular flair. And willing to pay for that unique item.
As I watch this video of two men discussing their respective trades, I am struck with the notion that an even more recent technology is suffering the pangs of being outdated.
I mean aviation. For every success story, there is a thousand who tried but did jot achieve their goals. However, like the two trades discussed here, there are pockets of them who have held on, scratching out an existence by tooth and claw.
Maybe this sounds too esoteric to most. But consider the finish carpenter who took pride in that he had over 200 planes for fashioning every type of trim.
It is a sad commentary of present day that even recent technology and its history has become unmoored.

As a lover of things historical, I’m going to correct you on your use of the word “Wainscoat”. The word is pronounced as it is spelt; Wainscot. Wainscot is a Baltic word for their native Oak. Much of this oak was imported into England for use as interior paneling because of its superior workability to the native English oak. So much of it was used that the paneling eventually took the name of the timber it was made from. Reference; Woods in British Furniture Making 1400-1900. An Illustrated Pictorial Dictionary. Yeah, I'm sorry to see it go. When my old partner and I sold our original shop property. I bought up a lot of the tools and equipment and started my own much smaller motorcycle shop. My thoughts were to hand it down to my son in law. As time went by, I did just that and helped him along as much as I could. Well he just didn't have the patience to try and build his own business so it eventually failed. The next closest "motorcycles shop" was 30 miles away, when we closed ours down. The next closest motorcycle mechanic probably much further. Everything else is just motorcycle "techs" who don't know how to repair parts, they only know to change out the parts that a computer tells them to. Another dying trade. Since it's all been filmed and logged onto the internet, it's not lost, it's just logged into the books of history as accurately as can be.

I am not sure how to react to Rick retiring because I liked how he did his work and explained it. I retired in 2013 so I applaud him for that; you too when you decide. I still will miss both of you showing what you(plural) can do and explaining it. Both of you, have many enjoyable years to come. I am 77 as of 11/30/23.

I have a great shop but no one to pass it on to also. Much of what I do is one of a kind, unique and fun. Never was a business - just enjoyable to make things. It will be very said to let it all go at some point but that is life. We can hope that someday the trades will make a comeback but for now it’s rather bleak. Thanks to both of you for sharing your skills and recording them!

All throughout this Vlog one can feel a calm but undoubtedly sadness A craft passes away, also the mutual respect towards each other is bittersweet in someways. Hopefully Mr Engels plans to continue hir craftsmanship. Very impressive vlog. Best regards, Albert 🇳🇱

What a sad thing to think that this skill will be lost. This is what young folks think their cell phone skills are vastly superior to. This not only effects those folks who still want to fiddle with horses and carriages, it also effects the antique car enthusiasts. Beauty just isn't appreciated anymore. The fellow I worked for back in the day had something like 30 pairs of carriage lamps, and I was polishing those every week and putting them on whatever carriage we were using for weddings that weekend. I only ever had to use them once. We did one night wedding in the two years I worked for him. It was about this time of year and pouring rain, and that was when I realized how very little light those actually put out.

As long as TH-cam survives then you and Rick will be immortal.
    That is quite the legacy.
Bravo to you two for your effort in this matter.

It's a shame non of today's kids or young adults would want to take on a traditional trade like the lamps repair or the coach work. When I got out of HS I wanted to do something similar but living in Sacramento there were no old trades going on to get into and I didn't have the means to relocate. Of course that was more than 50 years ago. Side note: I have the same pan and block brake.

Over the decades I have seen so many specialty shops close that was so much needed in the past. Shoe repair, watch repair, small appliance repair and such, And I almost forgot the battery rebuild shops, radiator repair, and Generator repair shops. I'm sad to see the old ways end.

It's really sad that Rick is retiring without having someone to train to continue his craftsmanship. It is really sad to see all these getting out. Perhaps it is our fault we let youngsters stuck in computers only. Wish we were able to bring youngsters to follow our steps. But, that's life.

Too bad he couldn't find a youngster who wanted to become an apprentice and learn the trade with the idea of taking over the business. It makes me wish I was about 20 years old. I would love to learn a trade like that and keep it going. But at my age, it wouldn't go on very long.

I had no idea what it took to repair and restore these old lamps. didn't even think it could be done and now it can't be. I followed Rick and enjoyed watching him work but now I wish him well in retirement. It is going to happen to all of these old trades someday.
    Cheers to both,
    Lee
