  • Thank you for watching!
Sashiko thimbles are not essential for Sashiko, but I think it really helps your stitching speed and the quality.
As it's not always easy to find Sashiko thimbles at local shops, I've been making my own thimbles.
Some viewers asked me about my original thimbles so I thought it may be helpful to share how I make my thimbles for people who are experiencing the same challenge.
I have made 2 different types so far - one is a soft type which I show in this video and a metal type which I will show in the next video.
The reason I chose faux leather is because it's inexpensive and easy to stitch on. Thick fabric like denim might be a good alternative but you need to make sure that you have enough layers to protect your palm and you stitch around it to prevent it from fraying.
If you are a Sashiko beginner, please watch my Sashiko basics video to learn Sashiko tools and their substitutes!

Lovely. I made one and inserted a coin in the centre. It works beautifully. Thanks for the lesson. I’m hoping to work my way through all your videos.

Thank you for sharing such a fantastic idea! A coin would be perfect to insert between the layers❤️😊🪡🧵

Wow. I just watched the covered-button thimble video, and now I can’t decide which one to make - I guess I’ll just have to make both! 😊Thank you for making and posting this most informative video tutorial!❤

My favourite one is the button one because it’s more solid but many people are also used to using this soft type😊 I hope you’ll find what is best for you👍

This makes me want to take up Sashiko more than any other Sashiko video I've watched recently... there's something about making my own equipment that I find really attractive. I'm just wary of spending money on special thread and needles and then just not keeping it up - it's happened before with other things - because money's so short at the moment. Is it worth practising with normal thread and needles first, just to see if it's right for me?

I totally agree with you. Sashiko was originally used by poor people to mend and reinforce their clothes because they couldn’t afford to buy brand new garments. So I have a mixed feeling about buying expensive Sashiko tools.
They are cheap in Japan but I live overseas now and it’s not easy to find them at local shops.
I sometimes use embroidery threads and needles instead.
I have a video about Sashiko tools and their alternatives, I hope it helps you find something locally.

I am finding that I need to have one like this one because the needle keeps hitting below my current thimble.

      That’s how I started making this one!😊

    Do you use heavy thread?

    • @thegreenwrapper
      @thegreenwrapper  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I used a Sashiko thread for this one. I think a thicker thread such as a denim thread would be good too😊 Thank you for watching!
