- The bikes are back but don’t worry, we decided not to scrimp on the clothing this time, but our budget bikes are ready for another challenge! With a few upgrades, how much faster can they really go? There is no hiding in a time trial, this will be a test of presenter ingenuity, determination & tactics!

Another idea is, to pick 3 people, who didn't learn freestyle swimming yet and try to give them best advices to train and see, which participant improved the most :))
I've been waiting for this since the ebay triathlon. Great job on the upgrades. I'd say Mark got it right, even if he did sandbag the first atempt.

@@gtn beyond the obvious (ie: entering a triathlon or time trial), is tri-packing a thing - like bike packing but spend some of the time/distance swimming and running?

With the massive change of bar height for Mark I am not surprised he managed such a quick time. The DIY disc wheel is something I plan to use next year on the local TT circuit.

Brilliant video guys really entertaining
Heather budget was like my grandmother used to say "the ruin of Palmyra" referring to the fact that you spend too much money ("this is the ruin of Palmyra" she used to say), but it proved its worth and it was fun to watch. She is the best even if she doesn't use the most shiny shiny materials. Mark's improvement is otherworldly, and I think he could go even cheaper with the Continental Ultra Speed III tyres which have very good rolling resistance for their price, and not the more expensive GP5000 just for this ride.

Three speed hubs have an illustrious history in time trials. Look up the prewar Raleigh/Sturmey-Archer team and the exploits of Sid Ferris, Bert James, Charles Holland, and Tommy Godwin.
I lolled like it was Top Gear at that 2500 £ budget bike upgrades reveal. TV gold I say 😅 Also Heathers approach to DIY was pretty funny, you could have exploited it more
Use washing mashine bearings like graeme obree on his old faithful! It's about as aero as a modern bike, and this is with almost round ish tubes😂

It'd be interesting to see exactly what the breakdown is on Mark's advantage over James. The big 3 for sure are good tyres, proper gears and budget disc wheel but I wonder what % each contribute.
Would be really interesting to see some other challenges in the other 2 disciplines like running barefoot/in barefoot shoes or similar things whilest swimming. :D ;-)

Heather's bike got the best upgrade, with the disk not necessary. She had to use warmer clothes to be faster: one layer short was she perhaps.
Next time, riders do all the mechanic work themselves (advice permitted).
