Jon Anderson (the lyricist/singer) explained the meaning of the song in this 2010 interview:
"... the idea of the lyric just coming out in a clear definition was basically what I was doing with “Starship Trooper go sailing on by.” For me, “Starship Trooper” was my higher self talking to me. “Sister Bluebird” - my higher self. It was my higher self saying “I know where you are, I’ve seen who you are, but I’m not going to tell you because you’ve got to discover it yourself”: “Though you see me, please don’t tell a soul.” What I haven’t seen, I can’t tell. It’s not very whole until I’ve seen it. So it’s all metaphors. That’s when I went through that very strong period of just sketching and writing whatever I sang as being a state of consciousness."
(You can read the interview on the web, Music Street Journal, interviewed by Scott Montgomery.)

I've seen YES six times in concert. It's truly incredible to see their performances! My first concert in 1976 was YES at the Inglewood Forum in LA. Seeing them live is so much different.....better that is. Glad we have these recordings to hear. Great reaction!

Awesome and genuine reaction, Tookie, to some of the finest music made in the last 50+ years! The lyrics don't mean anything in particular...but the more you grow to love the song, the more sense they will make to you! Steve Howe and Chris Squire are superb musicians and help, with Jon Anderson on vocals, to formulate that distinctive YES sound. Wakeman and Bruford / Moraz and White (keyboards and drummers) who also are superb musicians...but, for me YES will always be Anderson Howe and Squire plus drums plus keyboards. Explore more of Yes, Tookie - there is so much beauty out there! And, yes - Rush are the son of YES!!!

The Starship Trooper goes sailing on by. Catch my soul. Catch the very light. As it sailed by did it catch your soul and take you on your journey because having listened to this song for over 40 years this is what it means and does to me.. 😊

Original Yes keyboard man was Rick Wakeman!! These are not only great musicians / song writers, but great Artists!!! They paint with sound and motion!!!! Rick is alive at age 73 today! If you want to hear his work it is in all the albums Yes made. Also, check out his various keyboard works in the solo album , "Journey To The Center Of The Earth".

Alright! Note of interest: Steve Howe their guitar player is extremely respected. In the 70's he was voted in the Guitar Player Magazine ( a tech magazine) reader's poll best in the overall catagory 5 years in a row and taken out of the competition. This performance didn't show his energy.

Steve Howe kept his style as diverse as possible, even learning the pedal steel guitar. While I was aware that there was something like Ragtime guitar style, Steve Howe is the only guitarist I heard play in that style. Everybody knows The Entertainer on piano, but to this day, except for some shorter works Howe played on a solo tour, Clap is the only Ragtime guitar piece I've ever heard.

First-timers might like the studio version better. Or not, but give it a listen, the studio version melody is more precisely presented.

And for me, your reactions remind me why I love the songs I do. It’s like hearing the songs through fresh ears. It gives me even further appreciation. The song is essentially about small town mentality.
The narrator is addressing a traveler that passes through his settlement, and asks him to “sail on by. you might know a lot about the world, but please keep that information to yourself because I don’t want to know. I’m comfortable with my simple life in my little bubble, and I don’t want my bubble to change.”

I never wore a mask im in the hospitality state we love Freedom we did not take kindly to mandates so it didn't last too long. Yet the infections never really exploded like other states. Now I was one of the first time I catch covid in February 2020 before the crazy tyrannical political bulls@it took off had me down about 2 weeks but I had regular flu's worst than that. The crazy thing to me is before covid you could not GI into a store with a mask on but after covid you could not go into a store without one.. Crazy
