    "Trunks, you couldn't fathom the amount of dead men behind me."
    "Does Gohan know by the way? That you let him die." Cell's lines are actually PERFECT. So cold that I almost confused him for Cooler. We see that while Trunks did attain a new form from his father, he didn't necessarily attain a BETTER form. Stronger isn't always better. Especially if you can't hit your opponent.

    • @Arkayjiya
      @Arkayjiya ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Cell's line about dead men is made even better by the fact that I actually loved Trunks retort "and behind that insufferable smarm is a dead man" so the fact that Cell topped that line immediately afterwards with something so chilling felt incredible. He just recaptured the mood.

  • @Omega6489

    I don't know if you noticed, but Cell, particularly in the original show, is implying that the 3rd Grade form Trunks is using here probably could be used by Vegeta, but Vegeta recognized its weaknesses like Goku did, and so he didn't use it. This made Trunks assume that Vegeta didn't know about the form and so he assumed he was stronger than Vegeta when he actually wasn't. In the original, this is particularly what made Trunks so embarrassed that he practically gave up, because he misread his power and the situation so badly.

    • @saltyk9869
      @saltyk9869 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      Exactly. Vegeta achieved Grade 3 as well, but immediately recognized its problems. Trunks only saw the power but was too inexperienced to recognize the weakness of speed. Suddenly he realized he was wrong about everything. His strength, that he surpassed his father, and that he could bear Cell. Probably just one more reason for him to respect his father. To know that Vegeta saw what he didn't and wasn't blinded by more power. This is something Dragon Ball on the whole could do better in though. Too often power levels beat skill or intelligence.

    • @Omega6489
      @Omega6489 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@saltyk9869 Yes, and Vegeta knows Trunks made the mistake but doesn't criticize him directly for it. You see that later when Trunks misunderstands what Goku and Gohan's Full Power Super Saiyan form means, and Vegeta does criticize him from not learning from his own experience. That is what makes the Cell arc a breed apart from the other DBZ arcs, is that it really showed a kind of critical thinking you typically don't see. Super has a bit of this, but its usually caused by Whis giving tips instead of Goku and Vegeta figuring it out organically, which cheapens the experience. Still, Super's utilization of technique and fighting style shows that Toyotaro favors the Cell Games sort of power growth over other arcs.

    I don't know why but even when I know it is coming the "what channel?" line from 16 gets me every time. Somehow it's so simple but it gets the biggest laugh out of me of anything in DBZA without fail.
    Also, the saddest part about Trunks' whole experience here is that the whole time he thought he was holding back and he had reached some deep power that even his father couldn't. The revelation that Cell was aware of how to utilize Super Saiyan 3rd Grade and Vegeta probably knew about it too just didn't bother with it because of the weaknesses mean that Trunks was not just beat down on power, but everything he thought he knew going into the situation was wrong and he had to come to terms with that while fighting a fight he had no chance to win. That's just depressing.

    Let's appreciate the fact this is one of the only times, arguably the only time in all of DB where significantly stronger didn't also mean significantly faster as well.

    • @christiancinnabars1402
      @christiancinnabars1402 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oozaru also - while not being slower at all - doesn't gain quite as much speed as it does power over base form. It is also very lightly implied through some guidebooks that SSJ3 might not give the same amount of speed as it does strength, but iunno about that one. Then you have the the opposite, where speed is greater than power as seen in Burter and Dyspo.
      So out of the entirety of Dragon Ball, we have only 4, _maybe_ 5, examples of power and speed being non-linearly related. Which is a shame, because I love the dynamic it adds to a fight when they are mismatched (Dyspo vs Hit being probably my favorite ToP fight that doesn't include a main character).

    So to clear up any lingering confusion:
    This Cell is from a *different timeline* than the one that this Future Trunks is from. In that timeline, a different Trunks had successfully gone to the past (also a different timeline) and helped the Z Fighters defeat the Androids, then came back to destroy the ones in his future.
    Later, Cell ambushed that Trunks, killed him, and took his time machine to travel to *this* timeline, exactly one year before our Trunks arrived from *his* timeline.

    6th Rule of Popo's Training - if you remember, the other Z Warriors trained with Popo and were traumatized by it, often quoting the various "Rules of Popo's Training"; Goku trained with Popo in the original Dragon Ball, so this is just confirming that he *also* got the Rules burned into his mind, next to the PPTSD (Post-Popo's Training Stress Disorder)

    14:30 15:25 Respectfully, Ken is correct in this instance and Bethany isn't. Cell was inferring that Future Trunks's Super Saiyan 1.5 was more powerful than Vegeta's Super Saiyan 1.25 but he gained too much muscle mass and, as Goku also realised, the extra bulk made SS1.5 too slow. DBZ has official names for the new forms that Vegeta and Trunks used but you don't really need to worry about that.

  • @taecampus

    I do wanna say that I really did appreciate TFS massively cutting this plot point and fight by just one episode 😅
    In the original show, I believe Trunks powered up multiple times and fought Cell for like 4 episodes. The beginning of the fight Trunks (and at the end of the day Cell), didn't go all out at first because he was trying to lead Cell from Vegeta. That way Krillin could swoop in and save Vegeta while Cell was pretty much distracted by the fight... However, Cell obviously knew Trunks's plan and was just toying around.
    Not to mention, the OG show actually showed Goku achieving both Vegeta's form (Ssj Grade 2) and Trunks's form (ssj Grade 3).

    I remember the first time watching the actual DBZ series as a kid and noticing when Vegeta powered up the first time against SemiPerfect Cell, that he actually powers down slightly right after. It happens in a quick cut shot... like maybe 1.5 seconds. But you can see Vegeta shrink and the yellow flames get toned down a bit. Then in this episode when Goku explains it to Gohan I was like OHHHHHHHH! Fore shadowing in DBZ? :O

A new level to be sure, but not really a new “form,” per se. I can’t say any more than this without potentially spoiling something, so I’ll leave it for a future episode.

    You may not remember, but early on (I think in episode 4 or somewhere close to it), Yamcha, Krillan, Tien and Chatsu went to the lookout to train with Popo. Later on, Krillain makes a joke, having PTSD from the training saying "Number 1 rule of Popo's training". It was mentioned earlier in the series that as a child, Goku went up to the lookout to train (when Goku mentions he had been in the timechamber) under Popo. So when the clock broke, he had PTSD about Popo's training and thus the "sixth rule of Popo's training"

  • @lordgenerias

    The form Vegeta was using was basically him using a lesser form of what Trunks used. It's known as Super Vegeta. Trunks built on it, and it's known by fans as Ultra Super Saiyan, but it's not so much a new form as it is an enhanced version of a technique known as Power Stress. That's basically using ki, their power,, to force their muscles to expand and grow, giving them more striking power. But due to it growing in size, it causes the body to slow down.
    This leads to what Goku said. A 50% boost in power and strength, but a 75% decrease in speed and mobility. This is basically the "Square Cube Law". The basic explanation is that the bigger something is, the more energy it needs. Example, humans aren't anywhere close to as strong as a T-Rex, but we don't need anywhere near as much food for basic survival. It also explains that the bigger something is, the more durable of a frame it needs to keep from collapsing under its own weight.
    So, bigger muscles, more power, less speed due the bigger muscles. Vegeta found the sweet spot where he gave himself a considerable boost in power without sacrificing as much speed. Trunks, having no real experience in battle beyond being clobbered by cyborgs and a single easy win against Frieza, King Cold, and their soldiers due to a very large power gap.
    And those things Cell said Goku did as a kid? All true. Goku as a child tore through the Red Ribbon Army, defeated King Piccolo (Piccolo's father) and several of his children (Piccolo's brothers), and sent a person known as Monster Carrot to the moon to make mocchi for children (Monster Carrot was a humanoid rabbit with the power to transform any person he touched into a carrot, which he did to Bulma, so Goku used the magical size changing staff known as the Power Pole to wallop him without touching him directly, to force him to turn her back).

    As cell said, all of the Z fighters could do what Trunks did, they just wouldn't because it makes them slower and there is no point if you can't land a hit. Goku is dumb, but he's a genius at fighting (thus the math) so he would never try to pull what Trunks did. As Cell said, Trunks didn't really fight much compared to everyone else. I do like this Trunks. He's kind hearted, and is very normal compared to everyone else. And I love perfect cell because he's funny has great wit, but very intimidating and you can feel it by how much he is playing with everyone.

    The forms Vegeta & Trunks took are called Super Saiyan Grade 2 & Grade 3, or you can just call them Super Vegeta & Super Trunks. As you can see, while these forms are cazy in raw strength it comes at a cost which is the loss in speed & mobility, exactly as Goku described it. Cell even stopped mid-battle just to explain that to Trunks, basically saying it takes more than just raw strength to beat him, you got to have at least the speed to back it up.

    6:00 it’s future Trunks and future Bulma’s fault Cell was able to get here by inventing time travel in the first place.
    Trunks present was the Z-fighter’s future, their _actual future,_ until Trunks came to the past and created new futures with his actions, including a future where Cell hadn’t been encountered and so Trunks, believing he had already ended the only threat to Earth in the androids, wasn’t prepared for Cell to ambush him to death and jack his Time Machine.
    If Trunks hadn’t broken the future, Cell could never have done that. He might’ve been able to kill Trunks, he might not’ve, but he definitely wouldn’t be able to travel 17 years into the past, acquire his perfect form and stand a great chance of destroying the planet and killing everyone 16 years before Trunks’s present. That was only possible through Trunks and Bulma’s mistake.

    Something that I think TFS capitalized on much better than the original: Cell knows everything about all of our heroes. He knows exactly what buttons to push to cause each of them maximum pain and he takes every opportunity to do so. It's not just about strength. This version of him is the best kind of villain: someone uniquely qualified to challenge the heroes. It's the same principle that makes the Joker/Batman and Superman/Lex Luthor dynamics so great.
