I’ve been hunting for five years. Everything everywhere. This is the best video I’ve seen that actually encapsulates my experience. Well done. Well done!
I'm obliged to second this. I love this video! You, Harrison, put a lot of my thought process and watch analyzing into words, and it's equally fascinating and scaring (how much we care about timepieces). Thanks!
yeah, really needed to hear all that... 3 months into watch collecting and already with 8 watches where 4 i havent really used besides the week it arrived. now i'm putting so much more effort on getting the right reasons to build a smaller collection within a reasonable budget and uses in my life. right now i basically only use 2 on my day to day: a seiko 5 snk361 and a tissot prx. all of the others seems to be more of an eye candy in the storage box than any other thing... almost pulling the trigger in the bambino 38mm that i feel the need to have a more dressy watch in some ocasions but that's it for now
Owned several watches over the years, in retrospect ....mad that I sold some, gifted some and traded some. (Rolex, Cartier, Omega, Seiko, Apple, Garmin, Casio, Sailing timers) Wish I had most of them back. No video I have watched articulates the real essence of what brings you to purchase like this. You did a really good job here. We have similar sediment and I'm not as involved as you but your fundamentals are what sings true. Buy what your heart has you wear for each occasion, be honest with your self about brand and how it makes you feel. Enjoy the journey and learn along the way about how you feel when you wear or own it. Sage advice to new buyers, IMHO.
Personally, I think I’ve found the guiding principal for my own collection: the watches have to have some connection to movies/TV shows I loved in the past. Those watches are the ones that I find stays in my collection for a long time. Without the connection, I tend to get bored after 6 months no matter how awesome the watch is. Just got me a 5 digit Explorer 2 last week (Richard Hammond’s watch) to sit next to the Gen 1 Planet Ocean (Jeremy Clarkson’s). Now I might need to get either a Portugieser or a white dial OP to complete my Top Gear watch collection 😅
I like you man. As a new viewer to your channel I agree with everything. I’ve seen some of your other videos. You’r content is great. People like Teddy who promote hype watches and rant about non-issues in watches tend to hurt the community a lot. Keep speaking the truth!
Thank you for the insightful video on choosing a watch! Your emphasis on the art of selection, where deliberation meets emotion and passion, was truly eye-opening. It's not just about the practical aspects; it's about finding a timepiece that resonates with who we are.
I visited Vacheron and couldn't decide on which models to buy. The mistake was that I kept changing the waitlist, and I got the cold shoulder from the boutique. Eventually I visited them personally and they accepted my change one last time. I'm not sure whether it's worse to reject an allocation when it arrives, or change it midway.
I like your channel because I feel it is so fun to watch it as a collector who’s been doing it for a year but I’m sure beginner collectors enjoy it just as much.
I found the secret sauce - I managed to get bored of mechanical watches, realising that I wore G-Shocks 95% of the time. Now I'm down to just one mechanical watch - FC Highlife COSC (45th birthday present from wife). So, having liberated myself of the quicksand of mechanical watches I now find myself chasing the horizon of G-Shock MR-G and The Citizen. Easy... probably.
Great video. So right about step 2. I thought I wanted a Rolex explorer II. Went to an AD to look at some used examples. I expected to leave with the challenge of saving the money to actually buy one. What happened was that I was utterly underwhelmed by the watch in the metal. I just didn’t want it any more. I still like the look of it, I just don’t want to own it.
Great video idea. Can you do one on when to sell, and your preferences/best practices (ie eBay, vs Crown&Caliber vs in person)? I’ve got a few watches that have gone unworn (except at home) for a few years. But I can’t pull the trigger on selling them.
My next watch would be the one I'll keep coming to over the years. This was the case with Speedy. So I bought one after 8 years of longing. I've been enjoying and wearing it a lot. I've also learned to appreciate watches without actually owning them. One can't buy all the watches, but most importantly one doesn't need all the watches.
I've actually been thinking about this for a while and I was always in the camp of "buy what you like" but "buying what you LOVE" makes more sense. I've started to shift my collection into pieces I want to keep forever. Sure I'll have a rotation pieces here or there but I want the core of my collection to be the same 2-3 watches (OK 4-5 watches) that mean something to me. Also... are we just going to skip over the mustache? Great video!
Great advice Harrison, thank you! I agree 99% with everything you said, buy what you love and make memories and create those stories. The 1% I don’t agree with is that I wear my new Speedy nearly everyday and I don’t mind the scratches on the hesalite. They are barely noticeable unless you catch it at a very specific angle of light to see them. And even if I do see them, I smile and know that it was my 2 year-old that banged his hot wheels against it! Hahaha 😂 just adds to the memories! Cheers!
Form & function: can it survive any dings in the warehouse an look good in the office and possibly outside of work ? If hardlex - Seiko SNKL is worn in winter under a jumper or in summer out of work, 'Ray Mears' all year at work, Casio titanium Oceanus in summer- work & play.
Spotted a black Maurice Lacroix Aikon in this video (initially mistook for an AP). Is a nice looking watch - what are your thoughts on the watch and the brand??
I love my watch collection, and have chosen my collection based on my interests... I've got everything from cheap G-Shocks to Precious Metal horology. Choosing my watch each day, for the task in hand, gives me joy. Brands I love are - G-Shock MRG - Omega - Cartier - Grand Seiko - Rolex - Audemars Piguet
Been thinking about this a lot lately because I'm going on a delayed honeymoon (COVID wedding) to Germany and Austria soon...and I've been looking at Explorer 1s and 2s as a watch purchase for that trip. I want something I'll never be inclined to sell for obvious reasons, and the other day on a work trip I stuck my nose in a store that had a 36mm Explorer try-on in the case as well as a used 16570...hadn't ever had the chance to try both on at the same time and was originally all-in on the Explorer 1 as the obvious buy, but after trying on the 16570 they have flipped and that E2 is all I can think about now. I've had both in my head for a couple years but it seems obvious now. Bonus points...my dad was a watch guy and we never really talked about them much, but he had a couple dressy Rolexes and a Bucherer in his collection, and when he died my mom gave me a bag with all his other watches, and he had a Chinese 16570 rip in there, so clearly we were on the same page with regard to admiring that watch, and now I think it would give extra credence to that purchase if I bought the "real" version of it to honor him. At first I was waiting to see if Rolex would drop an updated E2 in the next year or so, but now I'm pretty dead set on the 16570 being the move, plus it would be my first foray into neo-vintage Rolex. That is absolutely the target now.
Very nice! I love this idea and the story behind it. I think you should definitely aim for the 16570 if you tried it on and loved it and given the personal connection. I really love my polar version of it. I think it wears wonderfully and is probably more contemporary of a wearing size too, so I do tend to gravitate towards it a bit more than my Ex 1 just from that standpoint. Good luck man!
Exactly the reason why Harrison’s advice of trying watches on in-person is a key point! Same thing has happened to me in the past, thought I’d like the Submariner, turns out I don’t. I much prefer the BB58 in Blue over the Sub. But totally prefer the Speedy over the Daytona. And I also thought I’d like the 16570 Explorer II over the newer 226570, but turns out I much prefer the new 9:50 36mm Explorer I 124270.
I can attest to acquiring “The” watch, cures nothing. I was fortunate enough to acquire 3 watches I lusted for; in only a few months. And it was too much, too soon, too fast. It might feel good for a month or a decade but there is always something else…..That said buy what you love, wear it in good health, and enjoy your trip through life with it on your wrist. A silent sentinel counting the minutes but storing the memories of those minutes.
I’ve been looking for a nice green dial on a 34-36mm watch. Without going over $1200. I’ve seen the PRXs, the Rolex options are out of my price range, the Tudor oyster dates are too much like a date just. It would feel too much like an homage. Then I found this omega seamaster cosmic. But it’s a redial. And they added a cyclops to it. It’s green. It’s my size. It’s below my average cost. But it’s a redial, aftermarket parts, vintage watch. And it runs a bit fast. But it’s so pretty. I’m torn.
I'd love to know the profit margins on something like a Longines vs a Rolex. Not making the value proposition, but rather what the premium for brand can be
The Iwc ingenieur is a watch I really want, but cannot convince myself to buy it at retail for $11,700 especially since it has the same movement as the mark xx which is damn near half the price .
Must Do: make sure you can afford to keep the watch. Sounds crazy, but the impulsive consumerism slides by sometimes. You can buy a grail, but if you can’t really afford it, it’ll just feel like a bag of cash on your risk and make you uneasy when you look at it. True buyers remorse. On the other hand, settling for similar alternatives never gets the job done (at least for me). I just make sure my wishlist covers a wide price spectrum and buy as they fit my circumstances and financial course. Don’t rush, watch consumerism should be gradual…all the fun is in the hunt anyway. *Unless you’re buying reps, then go crazy lol*
I've bought lots of watches mostly because I like how they look. Design is super important. Recently I was watching Antiques Roadshow. There was a Rolex. A man's one and only watch bought as a good quality tool for work. It happened to be one of only a few made, in original condition so it was worth a lot. I decided I wanted to own a Rolex because they are top quality. So I started looking at vintage ladies Rolex. I ended up buying 2. One from 1930s and one from 1970s. I love them. I really enjoy wearing them and looking at them. They give me such a feeling of owning something exceptional, special and rare.
First I usually separate by the prices. If it's over $2000, I only buy it to commemorate something, something big like a wedding, graduation to even something small like traveling to a new location. If it's under that price range, I usually follow my heart with some rules like, do I have any attire to go with the watch? or do I really want that watch? (aka searched/obsessed with it for over months?) Watches are not a necessity anymore so I usually don't care about "Do I need it?" I just have fun with it!
Having been doing this for 8 years now and with way too many watches, one piece of advice I would give is to NOT check boxes with your watch acquisitions. Don't think you need at least one diver, GMT, dress piece, chronograph, field watch, military watch, etc. Only buy a watch if you are certain you like the style and will wear it. I realized way too late I don't really like dive watches, despite nearly everyone saying you NEED a dive watch. I prefer something smaller like the 36mm Explorer and Datejust.
I just celebrated my first year anniversary of buying a Rolex. Regret is zero. It was the first very significant paid in full purchase for myself. It really meant a lot that this purchase wasn't something I could go and buy directly. I waited 8 months for the AD before i got the call. It was totally worth it!
Sometime we collect watch for remember somethingg,i buy my first luxury watch because when i was young all star in france appears in review with the santos, for me it was aspirational,i didnt regret the was was realy good, nice ...i sell it for econo ic problem and now years after i would like to buy it again...i would like to buy a mido comander they robe me years ago..i also look for a forget an old swiss brand who disapear because i saw this watch when i couldnt bye it,now its hard to find,i also research durind month a casio blue thunder from 198p because i worn it when i was teenager...so there is a lot of reason for looking a watch in particular, cool be sentimental, aspirarional or whatever
One of my friends is a big Tudor fan and kept telling me I had to get a BB 58. I went to the local AD and was under whelmed by it(to each his own and personal taste is just that, personal). I did end up going to the local Omega AD and grabbed an Aqua Terra in Summer Blue. I do really love and am very happy with thus far even though I hadn't considered an AT before that day. I actually get more compliments on the AT than I do with my GMT Master II. It's funny how you can feel about a watch when first viewing online than when you have it on your wrist...that feeling can change abruptly. That can be a good thing though and why one should always throw a watch on their wrist before purchasing, if you can.
I think “good” is a bit of an understatement. I think amazing or glorious would be more appropriate. Respect that stache, that mythical, mesmerizing stache… but that’s just me.
I love your group-acceptance theory, but it is exactly the opposite for me; I enjoy the group because it makes me feel like I’m not a total weirdo, despite what everyone in my life thinks!
lol I totally get what you’re saying and enjoyed the video , but this video kinda proves how much of a pointless circlejerk the watch collecting “hobby” is.

Excellent advice. I've been collecting for 55 years and will add this advice: never buy an expensive watch without trying it on first.

This was so well thought out and so well articulated. Nicely done.
Thank you!

Good advice! Especially about having a story.

Thanks man I appreciate that! Its a big hobby, so as long as I can talk to a couple people, I'm good
A really creative idea for a watch video. And well articulated too.
Thanks!

Great suggestion! I can do that
Something that’s worse then buyers remorse is sellers remorse 😂. I miss by bb pro but it was still to thick for my tiny 6inch wrist.

Great video - very well said!

Great video, not crazy about the mustache
Haha me either. It’s already gone. Worked for an 80’s promo for my company
Mustache looks good. Bravo
Thanks! It won't be staying. It was for a promo for my company that was 80's themed, but appreciate the Kudos!
I think “good” is a bit of an understatement. I think amazing or glorious would be more appropriate. Respect that stache, that mythical, mesmerizing stache… but that’s just me.
Hahahaha I'll be filling in for Tom Selleck in the new Magnum PI Reboot
Standard escapement is not the same as coaxial is not the same as spring dtive is not the same as quartz.
Talk to me Goose
Hahaha I should’ve used that

dude needs therapy...lol a spreadsheet? wow
All superficial purchases. Cmon get a life.
