  • Here is a finishing drill that combines an overlap run and a cross. The players will combine in a small space (5yards) and then play a through ball. Once the ball is played for the overlap, the player will cross the ball into the box for the strikers to finish. The strikers will curve their run to make it game like.
Take the drill up a notch by adding a central pass out wide - creating a more dynamic and game like scenario.

Can these be used for cenior or national teams

Of course! All the drills can be used for most ages, though some may require some modifications to better suit the age group.

Hi mate. What could be good as a Warm up to this, and then an SSG afterwards, with this skill in mind? Have you got any other plays/drills?

      Hi mate, appreciate you asking!
Typically when I use this drill, the session will start with either a triangle based passing drill, or an overlap passing drill. Then for the SSG afterwards, I have success with a simple 5vs5 with an extra player in 'wide zones'. No one else can enter the zone, and goals can only come from (or count as 2) wide players. The 'wide zone' is normally just 5 yards in width, but running the length of the pitch. The wide player can also be neutral. This helps the players get into mindset of playing wide. Can also progress depending on ability/age, and once the ball is played into the 'wide zone', allow one player to go in and complete an overlap. Hope that helps!

@@KSPerformance Thanks a lot for this. I've done the wide zone drills before and they work very well. I'm all for the wingers to draw out the defenders then slip into the pockets that they create. Good stuff. Will work the Triangles then into this finishing drill then the SSG with constraints. Cheers mate!

That would be a 3rd man run not an overlap

Technically, yes! Though I enjoy this drill as the principle of the first player passing the ball and overlapping that pass is the focus. I enjoy coaching methods that encourage indirect/independent learning. The players learn the overlap and timing, all while completing a third man run (unintentionally). They can then perfect the more simple overlap, while seeing how effective the third man run is! Hope that makes sense, thanks for pointing it out!

@@KSPerformance absolutely! I liked it as it’s simple as it is but complex depending on the coaching points. Thank you
