I really enjoyed Middlegame and it was one of the favourite books of 2020 so far :P But then I have loved every single book Seanan McGuire has written and love Neil Gaiman. Those two are very similar authors and have crazy vivid imaginations. My favourite of the Wayward children books are books 2 and 5 with Jack and her gothic weird science world of vampires and Doctor Frankenstein like mentor. I really enjoyed Lundy's book which is nr 4. It is my third favourite. Really looking forward to the new book coming out in January 2021.

There's a lot of name dropping in A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. I vaguely recognized most of them, but having not read the original trilogy in many years, I couldn't remember what role they played in the future books. I don't feel like this detracted anything from the story, so you can definitely get away without re-reading Hunger Games, but it might add an extra layer to your reading experience if all those characters are fresh in your mind.

Yes to all the reading vlogs of books including the new one about President Snow. I am of two minds either I will loathe it or I will secretly love it if its creepy villain vibes done right there is not in between. I feel like you don't need to read HG again to remember. The way of kings has such good characters curious to see if your loves are also mine! Good luck busting your slump - I am slowly climbing out of that hole. I am reading 2 which is decent considering before I would just buy books and stare at them! And read children of ruin already :P

Every time I hear you talk about loving the concepts in Three Body Problem I rub my hands with glee thinking how much more your mind will get blown away by the even more bonkers concepts in Death's End.
Newest favourite character so far in 2020 is definitely one of the easier questions for me having just finished Gideon the Ninth but alas it's not the main titular character but the amusingly cold, schemeful and arrogant Harrowhark that stole the show for me. I missed out on the bandwagon when it was released but it came under my radar again after it was nominated as a finalist for the Nebula Awards back in Feb. Didn't win but still such a fun read and a good enough set-up that I'll be jumping right on the sequel, doubly so with it being titled after Harrow, the moment it releases!
Speaking of the Nebula Awards (I'm not sure if you follow them) This is How you Lose a Time War won best novella just days after you mentioned it in your summer TBR vid. As if you needed more incentive.

I read A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes as soon as it came out without rereading the Hunger Games. There are references, but they aren’t exactly subtle so you’d probably get them if you don’t reread it. I actually enjoyed to book if you look at it more as a character study. As a read it I was looking into his actions and questioning his empathy and that was kind of interesting. The book definitely didn’t follow the plot that I had expected so it gets points in my book for being surprising.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes- I'm in the last 1/3 of the book and it's only gotten better and better. As long as one understands that there's only a couple characters who are "good" people that you are supposed to like, I don't see why anyone has a problem with it. I mean, it's President Snow- and you think the main character is supposed to be someone you root for? Of course not. It's a fascinating book so far, and I'm definitely enjoying it. You can start to understand how he got so effed up... how society got so effed up.

I also love art but couldn't go to art school because nobody took me seriously. The two characters were basically me cut in half. I sympathized with both of them. I'm really glad you raved about it so much that one day I told myself I have to read it. After reading it, I felt like drawing something.

So I read the ballad of songbirds and snakes and I would recommend you reread the hunger games because you forget some of the things that President Snow did and it makes the book a little lacking

As far as Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes goes, I would definitely recommend rereading the original Hunger Games trilogy before going into it. Not necessary, but I think it significantly improved my reading experience.

I LOVED middlegame by Seanan McGuire and I think it’s because I fell in love with Roger and Dodger’s relationship and characters. The feelings it gave me throughout the book.....It made me so happy, and it hurt at points too. But I can see why people don’t like it.

This video reminded me I also made a list of books that I wanted to read by the end of the year. Need to find that but I’m guessing I haven’t accomplished much haha

Brandon Sanderson is definitely my new favourite author! I don’t know why I haven’t read any of his works before but they are incredible! Also really looking forward to Addie LaRue in October and definitely want to read The Girl and the Stars by Mark Lawrence! 😊 although I’m not sure whether I need to read Book of the Ancestor series first 🤔

omg i’m so surprised you didn’t like Middlegame because it’s my only 5 stars book for this year yet ! I reaaally liked the characters and i prefer character driven stories so i guess that’s why i loved it so much ??
Also, i just finished The Name of the Wind (like literally 1 hour ago) and i liked it but i somehow couldn’t get invested in it ? idk it’s so weird bc i had no problem reading it but it didn’t interest me that much at the same time xD

I’m so glad you’re reading The Way of Kings, it’s so great! Have you read The Poppy War by RF Kuang? The last book in the trilogy comes out in November and I can’t wait! There’s military school, political intrigue, war, and gods *chef’s kiss*

I somewhat enjoyed Middlegame... When I put it down I never wanted to pick it back up again, but once I did the story carried me along. I hated the gaps in time, every time we jumped ahead a few years I lost interest and had to struggle to care anymore. The ending was also a giant letdown for me? It just didn't hit the emotional beats I wanted.

Goodness, I haven't had many 5 stars this year either. Only 9, but I've read 143 books so far. Ick. Of those, you've clearly read Skyward and Thunderhead. I would definitely recommend checking out a series by Sebastien de Castell. It starts with Traitor's Blade and the second book is Knight's Shadow. I gave both 5 stars, so good! Character-driven fantasy series with excellent narration (I listen to probably 95% of my books on audio.) I also love Molly Harper's book Changeling. Her writing is so easy to love, and her story is pleasantly non-cliche. Hopefully you find that one book that just reignites your reading drive. Best feeling in the world!

I had fun rereading Hunger Games before BOSAS because it reminded me of some specifics. I didn’t actually enjoy BOSAS that much though.
