@knutjobgoblin True. All true. I guess what sets this song apart for me is that she puts so much emotion into singing it that there's no denying she clearly has a real life front row seat to the man she loves destroying himself with alcohol.

I just had to finally make a comment about this song after more than 30 years ago when this song came out. I lost my boyfriend in a car accident and his name was Joey. This song came out the same week he passed away. He never knew I was pregnant but now I am the mother of his almost 31 year old daughter. She is beautiful and she looks so much like him. This song has always been close to my heart and for my daughter who never got to meet her dad Joey. RIP my love Joey ❤️

All of us struggle with the bottle, some bottles have booze, some sex, some drugs. I got addicted to partying and beer stationed in Germany, for some strange stupid quirk of fate once I got stateside I quit. 30 years later I occasionally will drink half a beer. Once a week it’s a dram of scotch my preferred vice. Hang in there dixie I believe in you.

    • @murphyr31
      @murphyr31 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

Fellow Drunk here, well now recovering drunk. I’ll have 16 years sober on December 23rd. Your comment made me just want to say something. I’m 52 now, when I got sober I was wanted in three counties in two different states for probation violations. I was habitual violator DUI. I was 50k behind on my child support, it wasn’t a totally accurate calculation but I was substantially behind. I obviously once again messed up my opportunity to have Christmas with my kids as the sobriety date suggests.
I was a morning drinker because my body was dependent on alcohol and getting drunk in the morning made it virtually impossible for me to have any sort of normal life.
I had little faith on 12-24-07 that I was going to be able to quit drinking this time but here I am nearly 16 years later and I still haven’t taken a drink. I had been to 13 plus detoxes and at least half that many rehab stints and none of those or my kids made me not drink. I finally got sick and tired of being sick and hopeless inside. I wanted a better life. If I told you I now have a life I could only have dreamed about you might question me. But I really do and all those problems with institutions and people I told you about are not a part of my life anymore. All because I put the bottle down. You can do it! Message me if I can help in anyway!
I love you and I’m praying for you tonight.
      Rich Murphy ( rmurphy37@gmail)
PS. In 09 I met my now wife and we have a daughter who will be 9 on Christmas Eve. So that 23rd sobriety date is significant for us in more ways than one.

I'll go on...I used to be Joey. I almost lost everything to drinking. My now wife, Julie, put up with so much of my shit but she always picked me up, dusted me off and forgave me. She would cry herself to sleep and tell me to please bring back the great man she had met. One morning, I woke up with half of my body in the front door of our home and my wife, son and toddler daughter staring down at me with a disappointment in their eyes that I had never scene. Crying and in a whisper, my wife said, "what do you think of these memories you are giving your kids?" It hit me, it hit me hard!!! I sobered up & cleaned up that day. It's been 9 years. I thank her & my kids for saving my life.

My father told me he drank to drown his sorrows and pain (mental & physical). I told him I loved him and forgive him for our childhood without him, but that drinking knows how to swim. This took me a while to type out, my eyes kept spilling out tears and memories. All of you in recovery, I am holding you in my heart. Be well. Try to keep swimming.

That rough, raw, throaty contralto. Sends shivers down the spine. That weary, lovelorn, nearly-defeated lyric. Almost makes me cry. The tremolo-inflected guitar solo. A burst of uplifting melody and power. The drums and bass: a throbbing, gut-churning call to arms. All in all, a blistering song, and so painfully underrated, it's not fair.

Joey, baby - don't get crazy
    Detours, fences, I get defensive
I know you've heard it all before
So I don't say it anymore
I just stand by and let you
    Fight your secret war
And though I used to wonder why
I used to cry till I was dry
Still sometimes I get a strange pain inside
Oh, Joey, if you're hurting so am I
Joey, honey, I got some money
    All is forgiven. Listen, listen
But if I seem to be confused
I didn't mean to be with you
And when you said I scared you
Well I guess you scared me too
But we got lucky once before
And I don't want to close the door
And if you're somewhere out there
    Passed out on the floor
Oh Joey, I'm not angry anymore
And if I seem to be confused
I didn't mean to be with you
And when you said I scared you
Well I guess you scared me too
But if it's love you're looking for
Then I can give a little more
And if you're somewhere drunk and
    Passed out on the floor
Oh Joey, I'm not angry anymore
    Angry anymore, angry anymore

I played this song at my girlfriends funeral. She died of a drug overdose; and I remember when it was my turn to go and speak I was just trying so hard not to cry; I had horrible stage fright and my voice kept wavering but I got up there. I began by telling everyone that despite her mistake, I refuse to let it define my opinion of her. She was a wonderful, caring and giving person who had been struggling with horrible anxiety and depression for 7 years of her life. I went on to tell everyone there a few stories about our time together; like the time she sold her drum set to pay for an operation for my dog, just as I was getting ready to put him down. Like the time she spent her savings so we could go visit my grandmother when she was dying of cancer... I protested against it, but she had told me there will always be more money, but if I don't go see my grandmother one last time I will regret it the rest of my life. If only I had known how little time I had left with her... anyways, then I talked about how this song is about a woman who is deeply in love with a man, and has to live with his addiction despite being constantly hurt by it. I said I blame the drug, never my girlfriend; that I loved her just as much as the day I met her, even if her habit tore me to pieces... though what I suffered is nothing compared to what she went through. I ended off by saying that when I got the news I was angry, sad and terrified beyond anything I had ever felt in my life.. but I'm not angry anymore, just heartbroken. I love you Maya, and always will. I will never meet a girl as beautiful both and the inside and outside ever again. I will remember you until the day I die... I will be 90 and forget how to use the toilet and brush my teeth before I forget you babe :'(

Thanks for sharing this with us... it takes a lot to make me cry, but you had me completely choked by the end of it.
As someone who has struggled on and off with multiple drug addictions over the years and who is married to an alcoholic who is struggling to get control over his life, I understand that addiction does not make a person bad... it's just a very difficult challenge that some people have to fight. Indeed, I think that some people are more beautiful and compassionate because of the hardship they have faced through their struggles with addiction.
I'm very sorry for your loss... she sounds like a truly amazing person.

Funfacts (from songfacts) (Joey by Concrete Blonde):
This song is about being in love with an alcoholic. Concrete Blonde lead singer Johnette Napolitano wrote it about Marc Moreland of the band Wall Of Voodoo - the bands played many of the same Los Angeles venues in the '80s. Moreland died of liver failure in 2002; Napolitano discussed Moreland and writing the song about him in a concert known as the "D.C. Sessions."
The lyrics to this song didn't come easy, as they were very personal and intense. In our interview with Johnette Napolitano, she told the story: "We did a demo with no lyrics. It was just like scratchy vocals, just me making sounds, basically, where I knew the melody would go. And right away everybody reacted to it. There weren't any lyrics, but there was something about the music that everybody really reacted to. And so we went to England to record the record with Chris Tsangarides, our producer. I knew what I wanted to say, but I
wasn't looking forward to saying it. And so it was the last vocal that I recorded.
And I remember Chris every day, 'Do we have vocals to 'Joey' yet? Do we have words to 'Joey' yet?' And I'm like, 'Not yet.' So I literally wrote them in a cab. I knew what I was going to say, it's just a matter of like a cloud's forming and then it rains. The lines are forming in my head and they're all in my head, and I know the chorus, and I know what I'm going to say. It's just a matter of fine tuning the details and how I'm going to lug it out. And then it rains. The clouds all formed and it rained. And then it happened. And that was it. And it was just there."
This is by far the biggest hit for Concrete Blonde, and their only one to make the Hot 100 (they have placed several songs on the Modern Rock charts). Johnette Napolitano has expressed little interest in hit singles or album sales, which led to tensions with the group's label, I.R.S. Records, which signed them in 1986. After five albums with I.R.S., including the gold-certified Bloodletting, the label offered them a deal where the group was sold to Capitol Records.
The group still refused to serve the musical tastes of a wider audience, and they ended up on independent labels. These days, their artistic credibility is unquestioned, but at the time, they took some criticism for daring to have a hit song. Napolitano addressed this in a 1993
interview with Happening when she said: "People call that song a 'sell-out' only because it sold records. If I could intentionally write a Top 40 song, don't you think I would have done it on the first album?"
The video drove hope the alcoholic theme. It featured Napolitano with the band playing in a small club while one lone patron drinks to excess. It was the only Concrete Blonde song to receive significant airplay on MTV.
This was a #1 hit for 4 weeks on the US Modern Rock charts. It gained popularity as "alternative" music was coming into the mainstream and radio stations were looking for stuff like this to play. Finding female voices was particularly problematic for radio program directors in this era of Pearl Jam, so this song was a welcome addition to many playlists.

My mother always loved this song. She loved all music. This was one of the many random songs from any and all decades so would play as I grew up.
One year after she unexpectedly passed, listening to all these ‘favourites’ of hers that she would play while I was growing up .. now have meanings. Like she couldn’t tell me this life lesson at that time, because I was young. But music ( these strong familiar songs) made such a huge impression on me. And now, I understand all these stories and lessons, she wanted to teach me. You don’t need to understand the lessons, because they were for me. A year now later after she passed, I think. Was this on purpose? Was she implanting thoughts in me that I wasn’t supposed to understand till I was older?? Maybe she just loved the songs, now I feel them too. Maybe it is all magic.

I've been battling depression for more than 20 years and I've had people in my life try to break through to me and help. I really began drinking too much during the last couple of years of my marriage and I blame myself for the end of it. These past 10 years or so I've come to grips with my illness and have actually allowed people in and try to help. So my message to all that are going through any kind of troubled times be it addictions or illness, please allow people into your life and be there for you.

This song is an enigma to me. I had no connection to it (that I can remember) during the 90s. But I listen to it and watch the video and instantly know, 'Oh, yes... this is classic early 90s stuff' So my first instinct is to brush it off as nothing serious-- a cheesy period piece. And yet... I keep coming back to it. Her voice, the emotion the subtle dark drive of the rhythm. Obviously, it's being recommended for review 30 years later, which means other people see genius here. I think I'm finally ready to declare this out loud: I love this song. It's a gorgeous, haunting perfect masterpiece.

This song captures the sad desperation of being a drunk or addict so achingly and beautifully. Years ago, I was struggling with drinking and told my girlfriend how this song reminded me of our relationship, thinking that she would also sympathetically relate in and feel sorry for me. Instead, she did something better and more important. She got mad at me (which she rarely did) and said, do you think I'm some enabling pushover and that I will just keep going on like this with you? It helped wake me up and soon after I got help and have now been sober almost 11 years despite the pandemic and losing my mom to cancer. We're also still together and married. Emotions when you're in the the throes of addiction are out of control, have a life of their own. When you're crying while you're drunk, it's because you're destroying yourself and coming up with every reason why after the fact. When you're sober and crying, however, especially in early sobriety, it's because you're healing and getting better and stronger. As sad and sweet and tragic as a drunken cry may sometimes seem to be on the outside, it doesn't compare to the inner strength and confidence you get from being sober no matter what no matter what, whatever the circumstances. That's real beauty.

Truly. A painfully honest song of regret, with love and hope for renewal.
I can feel it. This is what great songs do. Inspire emotion.

I don't have an addiction, but I know many others who do. It is a terrible way to live, similar I suppose to chronic pain or mental illness but different. Her voice and this song are amazing and I do not understand how underated it is. So powerful on so many different levels. I will never stop listening to it. So glad I found. Thx for inspiring the world...

Every single time I've heard this song, it's brought tears to my eyes. This song was written from real life. Had to listen again 1/11/24, still makes me cry. Lost my Joey 5 years ago...an amazing drummer and incredibly loving man to all who knew him. We both loved this song for her heartfelt honesty about addiction, and forgiveness. You can hear the emotion in her voice. RIP Joey Grillo.

    " Joey " ~ Lyrics
    ----- By Concrete Blonde
    (( A song Addressing Alcoholism & Love . . . of Second Chances ))
Joey, baby - don't get crazy
    Detours, fences...I get defensive
I know you've heard it all before
So I don't say it anymore
I just stand by and let you
    Fight your secret war
And though I used to wonder why
I used to cry till I was dry
Still sometimes I get a strange pain inside
Oh, Joey, if you're hurting so am I
Joey, honey - I got some money
    All is forgiven. Listen, listen
But if I seem to be confused
I didn't mean to be with you
And when you said I scared you
Well I guess you scared me too
But we got lucky once before
And I don't want to close the door
And if you're somewhere out there
    Passed out on the floor
Oh Joey, I'm not angry anymore

    Wiki:
""Joey" is the ninth track from Concrete Blonde's third and most successful album Bloodletting. The song was released in 1990 and was written and sung by Johnette Napolitano. One interpretation is that the song is about a photographer (Joey Mas) who is in love with alcohol.[1] Napolitano mentioned in her book Rough Mix that the song was written about her relationship with Marc Moreland of the band Wall of Voodoo (who would eventually die of kidney failure following a liver transplant).
It became the group's biggest hit, spending four weeks atop the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart, and crossing over to pop radio, reaching number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart; it remains their only charting song on the latter chart.
The song was written in a cab on the way to a photo studio in Philadelphia; it was the last vocal recorded on the album due to Napolitano's reluctance to record the lyrics, which were hard for her to deal with."
