- Concerns are rising about the Ukraine conflict's escalation. New footage shows Russia using its most powerful glide bomb, a 3.3-ton weapon capable of severe damage. Military experts warn it poses a significant threat to Ukrainian defenses.
On June 20th, 2024, a Sukhoi Su-34 fighter-bomber dropped the FAB-3000 for the first time in combat, targeting a multi-story building in Lyptsi, near Kharkiv. Russian intelligence identified the structure as a staging area for Ukrainian troops. The FAB-3000, with pop-out wings and satellite guidance, was designed for such high-value targets.
The next day, another Su-34 launched a second FAB-3000 at another building suspected of harboring Ukrainian forces. The bomb's "unified planning and correction module" allows it to glide, letting the Su-34 launch from a safe distance, away from Ukrainian air defenses.
The FAB-3000's impact is brutal, creating a colossal fireball and tearing through everything in its path. This blast primarily hit debris from earlier clashes.

FAB 3000 has already been a challenge for passive guide system. As heavier a FAB gets, higher the aircraft would have to go to release it and it tends to have lower range. A FAB 5000 with UMPK kit may not be practical in the real world...

The FAB 3000 is useful against hardened targets and bunkers. Otherwise, groups of smaller weapons produce better results. It is also useful to lower enemy morale.

I would imagine the FAB-3000 would be more effective against troops in hardened bunkers due to the sheer concussive force the bomb releases as a result guaranteeing a higher kill ratio of more troops in it’s effective vicinity regardless if the structure is damaged or not…..in my opinion.

A typical FAB250, 500 and 1500 have a range of approximately 70 miles, which is outside the air defence zone, which is why Ukraine cannot stop them.
The F16, if they ever arrive, will make absolutely no difference to the outcome of the conflict.
Imagine an F16 flying from either Poland or Romania landing in Ukraine, then takjng off again to try and intercept a glide bomb launched by an SU34 from near the borders of Russia which is protected by the long range Russian air defence systems.
Its a foolish idea, made by people in NATO who know that the F16s will get shot down either trying to intercept a glide bomb or when they are fleeing back to a safe base outside Ukraine, provided that thd Russian's don't attack the bases in Poland or Romania, because they are now parties to the conflict.
Will NATO get involved, i very much doubt it.

Correct, if the plane can carry more 1500 in total than the 3000 (4500 v 3000) then it carries more punch per sortie, and the 1500 can fly further, is more accurate and gives 3 chances of a precise hit. The 3000 is more like the British tall boy of WW2 where you need to penetrate deep underground and effectively create and earthquake bomb that shakes infrastructure down or takes out deeply embedded fortifications.

The limiting factor may be the production of guidance kits so using bigger bombs would maximize the effects. So instead of three 1500kg bombs on one target they can destroy three targets with three 3000 kg bombs. The videos are showing that all the kits are always thrown at the same time against quite close targets meaning that at least against long distance targets, the maniability of the bombs are quite limited.

That is the whole purpose of weapons.
So, the reduced accuracy must be as a result of the unified gliding and correctional module not being able to properly deal with the additional weight of the bomb during final descent into the designated target area. Perhaps the control surfaces are insufficient to properly direct the much heavier bomb as it gains speed near impact. In any case, as merely a fear inducing weapon, it will easily deter Ukrainians from gathering their forces in concentrated numbers. Also, they might eventually revamp the module to increase accuracy.
3000 is not even the biggest, there is also a 5000 & 9000...

FAB 3000 is not meant to be dropped directly on a building, your so called 30 foot miss is not a miss as the blast is way more destructive to the meat in the building if dropped next to it as it's not conceived to destroy structures. I don't understand how you could miss that.

The precision maybe degraded by jamming so a bigger weapon being effective even in this case may be more powerful than several weapons hitting outside their effective radius.
Moreover, the limiting factor for Russian may be the numbers of UMPK kits, especially the Kometa-M guidance kit, not the numbers of bombers available nor the numbers of bombs. In this case, using the most powerful bomb possible would maximize the effect of the guidance kits produced on the battlefield.
The FAB-3000 will have it's place same as any other unique weapon and I have no doubt about that.
Sure, for some applications, having 3XFAB-1500 instead of a 1XFAB-3000 will be a better option, just the same as how carrying even more FAB-500's can be more beneficial than 3XFAB-1500. It's just a case of having more options and the "It's better to be looking at it than looking for it" philosophy.
