I just love the beauty and simplicity of the Willcox & Gibbs chain stitch machines. I have been searching for one I can afford for years now. Oh well, hopefully some day. Thank you so much Alex, you have made a dark & dreary day much brighter.

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Another wonderful video! And timely...I've been piecing (144 blocks), and now even quilting, a queen-size quilt using only my W&G hand-crank and treadle machines. LOVE MY W&G's!! 1885 &1892 vintages.

Yes the W&G simply beautiful. Even today most of them make a perfect stitch. That says something for great American engineering.

Thank you, Mr Askaroff! Enjoyed the video. I am looking into collecting old machines. I have a New Home treadle with paperwork dated 1906, and still sew on it. I have taught myself to do maintenance, since nobody around here does it!

I have a W&G industrial sewing machine. I bought it at a yard sale 35yrs ago works beautifully. Had made my kids holloween costumes for 15yrs(my ex wife didn't sew). I learned to sew from both my parents. It was on a Singer table which I lost in storage during my divorce, but I was able to keep the machine. I had also found another W&G which I gifted to my mom for mothers day. I don't know what happened to it after her passing since my sisters always got to things first as my parents passed.
I had taken my machine to a shop(now closed) when I first got it and was told it was from the 20's. They sent me to another shop 35miles away(also now closed) where I was able to get some needles and a few bobbins, which got lost with my table. After 15yrs, I am now looking to replace my table and accessaries for my machine as it sews better than any other newer machine with the plastic parts.
Thank you for your historic video.

What a neat video. I am the 4th generation of James Wilcox.. I have a question for you. When did they sell the company? I also learned about James Wilcox a few years ago. My grandmother never told us about her great great grandfather. I like the explanation of the shape.

I have a quick question about Wilcox and Gibbs the round part I keep breaking my thread the round part where it says do not oil my understanding is you have to take the whole machine apart to adjust that and can you adjust it just by wiggling the top the round part I'm not going to oil it don't worry but my question was can you without taking it apart adjust it please and thank you for your time

    Hi Alex
You have opened a new world for me.
I am South African and have been living in the UK for 15 years.
I have been sewing for 64 years and my first machine at the age of ten was a singer, loved it.
Moved onto Swiss made machines, because in SA we didn't have this heritage.
Would love to see more informative programs on TV instead of these everlasting cooking programmes.
    Thank you.
    Anita

    Hi Alex,
Please could you tell me of a similar machine to the Snier I just bought. It came without a manual, is in lovely condition and I need to get full use out of it. The knobs are, bottom left: tension regulator, top left: choose stitch (straight, zigzag, etc.). To the right of the choose stitch are stretch stitches. Top right, buttonhole width, beneath it stitch length. The Sneir has 2 cotton holders. Sorry, I don’t know the names for things although from my great-gran down to mum they made a living sewing. I now need to use whatever I’ve learned by osmosis + what I learned at convent to earn my own. I’m in South Africa, so very far away : )
