Spooky Abandoned 1870 Asylum, Virginia

  • Come along today as we venture inside an abandoned Lunatic Asylum in the Woods of Virginia. This asylum was built in 1870 and was specifically designated for African American patients. This was unusual for the time as slavery and injustice for minorities still plagued most of the south. However, this place did not treat their patients properly and most were only able to leave in body bags. After operating for approximately 104 years, this place officially closed in 1974. Overcrowding was the primary issue at this facility as there were over 5,000 patients in a building with a maximum capacity of roughly 2,000 patients. This led to under-staffing and neglect for the proper care the patients needed. Many places like this closed around this time due to changing ideologies in the proper treatment of the mentally ill.

I used to visit the asylum in Petersburg Virginia on state road 36 often during my army enlistment between 2006-2009. It is the creepiest place I've ever visited in the 39 years of living

Such a sad and lonely place, it must have been horrendous to be a patient during those times with all of the abuse that was handed out. I would say it was the doctors etc that were the ones that needed to be patients there as they acted more insane than the patients themselves. Thanks for sharing. x

Sweet vid,I have a connection to this place. My grandfather was a lawyer and he represented patients and families of patients from this place,he told me he remembers sexual, physical abuse and medical mistreatment being common here. I've also explored this place a year or so ago, after I heard my grandpa's stories. He has a few pictures of this place when it was running too during his visits with clients.

Fascinating! I'm sure your grandfather must have dealt with some horror stories at that place. Its a wonder how it managed to stay open for over a century. Thanks for commenting!

I had never been around this place till I took a train ride a few weeks ago. I did not even know what it was but when I went to eat at a place near by I saw it and it sent my heart racing. I told my hubby I don't know what that is but the negative energy coming out of that thing is massive. I did not even want to be any closer to it. This is a horrible place and that ground is cursed. I hope yall did not bring home anything while you were there. It's another level of bad juju!

I wouldn't advise going there that place is still a running hospital and trespassers are seen as viable threats to security.

    Everyone:
Almost certain this is the old Saint Albans asylum/sanatorium in Radford, Va/Pulaski, Va.
We would sneak in at night as kids and run around freaking each other out. Pretty eerie place to be, but very cool.

That was not a autopsy table that was actually where residents get bathe , I worked in a institution for any years and that’s just the way the tubs are made and they usually have a shower hose attached to the faucet.

Dude remimds me of that one clueless manager we all worked with @ one time or another..."Why are their books here"??? After seeing repurposed tape on the shelves...It's a HINT, genius!!! The hospital didn't remain one purpose throughout it's existance. The rooms were repurposed as needed @ the time...Imagine @ one time, the "smile room" was where they put patients after doping them up, so the staff could clean up their feces...

I bet $100,000 I could have this place ready for full use, occupationally acceptable, and livable in 18 months. The owners (if they're still alive) just left it to rot. I PROMISE you it still has value. And if people were truly smart, they'd take it over and refurbish it and have living spaces for all kinds of people.
