It’s great giving a new life to equipment of yesteryear. Well done. For people, like myself, who don’t have electrolytic cleaning facilities, vinegar works well. By soaking rusted metal in a solution of vinegar and table salt (ration of: 1x cup vinegar to a table spoon of salt) over night, depending on the severity of the rust. After the vinegar bath soak it in water with a cup of bicarbonate of soda for ten minutes to neutralize the acid.
Not one of your best ones, but you are learning and that's the most important thing. Good luck in Spain and look forward to seeing much more from you 👍
Thank you, Colin, I agree with you. I needed an easier video just to get one out to you guys as it takes a lot more organizing for the E30 videos than something like this. Lots to come cheers again Colin.
Great video as always, keep 'em coming! I saw the linseed oil and just wanted to give a friendly reminder to always burn the used towels. Linseed oil may self-ignite if you leave the oily towels as they are. Even sawdust from treated wood with linseed oil can self-ignite. You are most certainly aware of this, but for safety reasons - just a friendly reminder :) Greetings from Sweden :)

You, AvE, and HTR are the guys who make interesting, educational (in a good way), restoration/take apart/intelligent videos. Really, really a great channel. Thanks!
I think you did a great job! I like how you reshaped the handle to make it look as though it belongs on this machete. I also like how you didn't make it mirror glossy. It looks as it should--a working tool. Great job!!! Take care
I enjoyed the extra sass in this one.. and I quite like these simpler videos as well. They balance out the longer, more complicated ones. Sometimes we just like a snack... and more importantly, "another video".. So thanks for making these ones to tide us over..

Nice work on the blade. Now you can go out and cut down some firewood to heat up the workshop! And i take it you are just waiting for your new safety glasses to arrive? Stay safe and keep up the good work.
@@RestoreIt Sorry for being critical but i get kind of freaky about eye protection - when i was young i got a piece of metal swarf into an eye from a milling machine and it was a massive lesson to learn. Like you i'd just forgotten to put my glasses back on after a work break.
Thanks save it all! I think you're right. I have borrowed my friends a few times, I'm just holding out for a variable speed one as one speed can be scary.
Nice job on the machete 👍 I really don't understand all the thumbs down 😐 I have worked on a few machetes and I think your handles are original, they were a working Mans tool, If you get bored take a look at my machete 'restoration', it gets used on brambles and stinging nettles
It's interesting to note that the rust appears to be mostly of the surface kind (hence the lighter color) but there is deep pitting on the metal. It almost looks like it was de-rusted at some point and then it got rusty again at a later time. Maybe the person who put the new handles had something to do with that too.
Move here to Southern Arizona and be my friend! It's currently 15.5 to 21* C during the day and 2-7* C during the night. :) It's wonderful here during winter. It makes up for us having to suffer through 43* C summers. 😫
I've got a British army survival knife. I think they nicknamed it 'The Pig' and the handles have those gaps/ overhangs on it. They're there for a reason, but I can't remember why. Something to do with keeping your hand cool and dry I think, but I filed mine down as well. It's not a true survival knife, I believe it comes in the transport toolboxes. Kind of a jack of all trades knife. I've also got a Martindale machete. Which is also for the British army. 🇬🇧 Maybe yours is something to with the German army. Take it to Spain. Lol.
Haha, I probably will take it to Spain to be fair. And I didn't know that, thanks for telling me. It was very uncomfortable to use like that. Maybe it because I didn't have gloves on.
I got one similar to yours mine a bit thicker blade . it was used in the tobacco trade I think I would have epoxied the wood and coated it with boiled linseed oil .paid 2 quid at car boot for mine
What are you going to use a machete for? Chop strawberries or stop robbers who have pocket knives, pull it out, be like Crocodile Dundee and say "That's not a knife. This is a knife."
Nice work. Was that linseed oil you used to stabilise the blade after the electrolysis bath? I want to get a set up going myself to clean something very sensitive and want to be sure I use a good oil on the blade to prevent future rusting.
I love watching you work with electrolysis stuff, but I gotta wonder: Does it stink? I can't imagine what the smell of old rust flaking off from that chemical/electricity combination must smell like, especially when you take it out and have to remove the rest yourself.
Can you imagine, after all that hard work, only to discover it was made in China? Just kidding :) good job. I enjoy your restorations and look forward to new video's all the time.
