Watching this video again figured I'd leave a comment with hopes that Steve heals up to his normal self soon. In regards to the video topic the 60's Chevy fullsize cars are some of my favorites, I've had a few over the years and currently have a '63. Always thought the X-frame was a crummy design though glad they ditched it in 65.

My grandpa had one. 1960 348 Tri-power 2 door factory. Dealerships chosen to get them got one and only one! And his was a manual 4 speed on the floor. It was red with white interior. Of all the cars he had, he said he missed that one the most. he said on the freeway he could smash the gas the back of the car hunker down and the car take off. When he gave me my 1960 Ranchero for graduation in 2003 he put a 66' mustang 289 drive train in it and a mustang II rear. I'll never forget, grandpa Tom said "She Scoots like that ole' tri-power..... She Scoots!".

The red 4dr at the top of Steve's 1960 brochure is the 4dr hardtop. Chevrolet called it the sport sedan. My mom had a white one with black interior and black side spearwhen I was a kid.
    On the 1959-60 design.....
"The Cars of Harley Earl" by David W. Temple has a complete chapter on styling/design of the 1959s and a short write-up on the cleaned-up 1960s.
The flat-top styling is what was called "international design." Hemmings Classic Car, 2017 January has a big article on this design.
Buick finished their design first and the other divisions hsad to work around the Buick design.
Interesting side note.....all five divisions shared the same glass.

Great tour of a cool car! Chevrolet was eating everybody's lunch back then. As far as the X frame goes, it was no more or less dangerous than its competition. In the days of longer, lower, wider, GM, Ford, Chrysler, etc., had NO side impact protection. Since the bumpers were often higher than the passenger compartment floor, you just got smacked in the lower door. If you had a perimeter frame the offending car would just ride up over the frame and crunch you. This is why side door beams and side airbags were invented! Expecting the lower structure to protect you, sitting above it, is like expecting your steel toe shoes to protect your shins! 😁
Fisher Body also engineered stronger, double boxed rocker panels and plenty of cross bracing in the floorboards for these cars.
But then lots of people did not trust any unibody (AMC, Chrysler)car back then either.

Interesting that John Christie mentioned the Little Old Lady From Pasadena, as I thought that song came after this was written. So I googled, and it turns out that that phrase was a thing long before the Jan and Dean song. It originates back to Edgar Bergan and Charlie McCarthy in 1949, and was also used by Alfred Hitchcock in an intro to one of his shows.

Back when we were teenagers, there was this body shop just out of town and the owner's father kept his '60 convertible tucked away in the back, white on red, with a 348 tri-power and a 4 speed. We'd often go to "visit" the car and try to talk the old guy into bringing it out.
I don't know why he never did. The thing had about a inch of dust all over it and it needed a clean-up in the worst way but it ran perfect. A good day's work with the soap & water and polish and you'd have yourself one sweet cruiser.

Every time my dad bought something other than a Nash / Rambler / AMC through the years they seemed to always replace it with another American Motors vehicle until AMC got bought out by Chrysler. The next Chevy my dad bought wasn't until 1989 when he bought a Chevy Corsica but it was only because I worked for a Chevy dealer and he got a good deal on it.

Interesting that John Christy’s article would say the Chevrolets were cars for traveling salesmen. My late grandad owned a one-man rural repair shop from the late 20s through the 70s and one of the cars in his accompanying junkyard collection was a 1950 Chevy two door. I remember in the 70s him telling me it was unique because it had a Powerglide and only had about 50K on the clock. Apparently circa 1951-52, the salesman who owned it was passing through had car trouble left the car with him to fix. I don’t remember what the car’s problem was but seem to recall my granddad saying he either bought it or traded him something to get on his way. Parked it under a big cottonwood tree. Anyway, a Kansas wind storm blew thru and dropped a cottonwood limb on the roof of the car. And there it sat until the late 80s when the cars were all auctioned off, although the tree limb was removed.

I ordered two new vehicles in 2005 - a F-150 for me and an Escape for my wife. The F-150 at that time was still a fun vehicle to order, with a fair number of different options you could pick and choose. The Escape was less so, but there were still a few options I was able to select (the trailer towing option being the particular one) that likely would not have come on a lot vehicle.
When I ordered my Mustang in 2008, the selection process had pretty much devolved into package selections and colors, although since the combination I wanted was fairly unique it still made sense for me to order. When I purchased my Ranger in 2009, I would have liked to special order it, but I purchased so late in the year that it wasn’t possible any longer for that model year. That being said, only real compromise I had to make on the Ranger was color. By the time we purchased our Escape in 2019, we felt as if ordering didn’t make much sense and we simply purchased a lot vehicle.
In looking at trucks on Ford’s website a month or so ago, I might still order a truck just to get the exact combinations I want, but for any other kind of vehicle the choices seem so limited that I would probably just do a lot vehicle again and call it good.

Chrysler went to a full unit-built body shell with a steel front sub-frame on all of there cars. I wish to point out that the instrument cluster on the car that you profiled is not magnesium, it is pot metal. By the way, the front door small window(s) are the vent window(s). The quarter window(s) are all ways located in or at the rear quarter panel(s), that is where the term "quarter window" comes from. Please reply. Dave...

My dad had a white ‘60 Biscayne. Bare bones plain Jane work car. I remember a TV special in maybe 1969 about teen driving safety. The teens were driving recklessly in a red 1960 Impala. The last scene showed the car alone on the highway - front end all smashed up - and the teens inside the car all covered with fake blood. As a little kid, it bothered me that it didn’t show what they hit … and that the passenger compartment was perfectly fine (no windows broken), but somehow the kids were all bloody. Every time I see a ‘60 Chevy, I’m reminded of that stupid film from 50 years ago. Weird the things that stick in your mind.

About 15-17 minutes in, he finds the ratchet buried in the radiator support. He sent it to me, I cleaned it up and rebuilt it and it works like new now.
Eventually, I plan to maybe go down and visit him and be on the channel, if that's something that he and the viewers of his channel want. I'll visit other content creators that are in the area if I can.

Still a lot of good parts. The dash in these look great in Chevy Trucks of this same time frame.

So I guess the societal reference to “The Little Old Lady From Pasadena” actually existed well BEFORE the Jan and Dean song……??? That car review on the 1960 Chevrolet was written several years before the popular song was released in 1964! I wonder if the article Steve was reading was the actual source, in which case, some automotive writer is due some pretty hefty royalties…….🤔
I know opinions are mixed on Chevy’s “batwing” design, but I personally love them! Make mine the tamer version from 1960 with the more “Impalaesque” three round taillights! Would you include the ‘61 model in the “batwing” category, since one could argue there is still a little bit of the design feature in its rear styling……????

Steve, It took some time for me to accept the 1959 batwing. I thought the 1960 Chevys were hideous especially the flattops. Now they all look cool!

I feel the same way about 70’s era American land yachts! Back in high school during the early 80’s we HATED them because so many of us had them as hand-me-down first cars. But today I love the personal luxury and full-size cars from the malaise era, and gravitate toward them whenever they turn up at a car show!

My aunt Joan had a 1959 Impala four door her husband bought new. She never liked it because it didn't have power steering. A friend of mine's dad bought a 1960 Nomad wagon with the 348 in 1971 to use as a work car. I remember it had the same interior trim as an Impala and that particular one was white with a red interior and actually looked pretty good.

This one brings back memories of my dad's 60 BelAir 2dr post he purchased new just before I was born. Had the 235, 3 in the tree. Interestingly he traded a 57 210 2dr in for the 60, and got more on the trade in than he had paid for the 57 as a used car in 1958.

    Fun part piece of trivia.
The Impala's image was "borrowed" by one of the Soviet Union's - GAZ-21 VOLGA had it on it's bonnet,as figurine.
    Ok,ok - "engine cover".

@@ExilefromCrownHill two door Nomad production ended with the '57s , as customers had indicated that they wanted the convenience of four door wagons . They sold more four door Nomads in 1958 alone , then they had two door Nomads during '55--'57 combined . 1960 was the last year for the sedan delivery until the Vega came out with one from '71-'74 .
