thinking back, remembering F-16 Falcon and F-16 Combat Pilot on my trusty Atari ST back in 1989. We had come a long way since then to Falcon 4 and F4AF and then everything went quiet on the commercial front. Glad to see an up to date F-16 being in the works. Just got this after learning the hornet. I had moved to DCS shortly after playing BMS so knew a bit about the F16, and its flipping awesome in DCS too. I would say the words hornet and viper actually describe the feel of the planes really well. The viper feels a lot more aggressive, streamlined workflow. Hornet feels like its designed for standoff. Thanks for all the work you put into these vids, been able to learn v. fast.
I worked on the F16 for 10 years. This is by far the most accurate representation of functionality I've seen in a simulation next to the real trainer. There are some things that aren't right but there is so much good they did right that it can be easily overlooked. I would recommended it definitely 👍

Didnt see the video but: When you love A/A then its the module you want. It is highly maneuverable and is decent at A/G especially when it gets JSAWs and JDAMs in the future. It can do nearly everything you want in terms of A/A (no cobra :/ ) and a lot in A/G :) I would give it a 8/10 in general due to lack of JDAMs/JSAWs right now and when it gets them i give it a 9.5/10 due to having only 4 A/G pylons. Its a very good module even after only 1 year in early access. In 1 year i would say its better than the F18 because its way better in A/A and can do 80% at A/G of what the F18 can do. The F18 has the advantage of beeing naval tho ;) Now i saw a bit of the video and i have to say that i love your buying guides/module reviews!!! Thx for doing them
With the F-16, all you need is a bunch of AIM-120 and 2 AIM-9x. Thing is, I can add 6 AIM-120 and 2 AIM 9x to the FA-18 and be able to carrier land. The Real plane we need is the F-22. Air Superiority Dominance.
You evaluate planes based on pure performance. I prefer to evaluate planes based on how fun they are to fly. For example, the F-18 is extremely capable, but the Harrier is more fun to fly AG missions in.
Of course the F16 allows you to strap 10* CBU97s which might as well be called CBA's coz you're gonna kill masseive clumps of enemy units with almost no aiming required. I killed over 100 T72's in one flyby, and that number could easily be beaten by just placing more tanks down in the editor. surprised nobody's done a WR video yet

You're spot on about the afterburner, its SFX is severely lacking from both the ground and aerial perspective. A realistic option would just to have a loud grumbling sound that washes out everything when AB is ignited. However one will never know the true experience from a sim that they'd get in person. Reminds me of an story: 1994 I was assigned to the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg. At that time Pope AFB had F-16's assigned to it as well as A-10's and C-130's. One night several of us from my company were assigned "chute" duty in which we went down to a place called Green ramp which sat in abutment to Pope ramp. Our job was to hand out parachutes and other duties to the soldiers jumping that night. However this night there was a single F-16 chained down about 250 meters away where maintenance was doing engine run-ups which included all stages of AB. This commenced for about 30 minutes and the roar, vibrations, physical presence was so phenomenal there could never be a substitution or additional ways to describe. I might have truly enjoyed the experience if it weren't for a dilapidating headache. Maybe someday DCS (MOD developers) can get closer to the true sounds of AB. Never the less, I own this module and thoroughly enjoy it.
@@CameTo I bought the F-16 Aprilthis year in steam sale. Unfortunately at this time the air-to-ground were not implemented so i switched to the JF-17. Since the Mavericks were implemented this September the F-16 is finally fun to fly. Still buggy and not fully functional on steam client, but still a lot of fun.
Hey Cap, not sure if you are reading comments from this video still but if you find the tire rumble important it would probably help to add a transducer to your chair so you can actually feel the rumble. It makes a night and day difference and you can feel the exact moment your tires lift off the ground. Message me if you want help finding a setup.
I was 80% certain that I should buy F/A-18 as my first official high-fidelity module, but after I watched this, I got the Viper and I have no regrets. Great work as always!
What Eagle Dynamics could and should ad are the turbulence in the cockpit, shaking the pilot up. By that the up & down shaking.Too smooth in the there. Gun and missiles sounds are 4 times louder and the cockpit shakes... needs to be added! Missile lounch sound maybe even 8 times...Fschhhhhhummm Windsound is much louder in real and with more volumeric experience... Could be added by more bass Hz... More high contrast on the MFD's
Incredibly hard to decide. This is still in service and fully clickable , but now a mod makes also F15 almost full clickable thanks to RedK0d, as well as Su 27 semi clickable.
the modules are moderately expensive but in comparison if only i could afford the rudders, hotas, and vr systems, id be right there with you flying missions
@@Pionel_pessi. i was only implying the cost of some of these fanatics setups lol. i understand there is always a difference between simulator and the real thing however, after flying real planes it just feels funny operating rudders from a keyboard to me. honestly, it feels funny either way compared to the real thing. i have not tried any of the vr systems or projector setups.

In these kind of review you should include the damage model too , while the A10 has multiple failures modeled the F18 has none or very few....i think is an important part of the simulation taking hits and have to fly back home....
I don't know why but your F-16 external engine sounds are completely different from mine, and I have no mods installed. Also I can hear quite a difference from mil power to afterburner, maybe something's wrong with your F-16?
Are you running the beta version? The GR team uses the Beta version, not the standard release. I've noticed there are a lot of different sounds in the Beta version for some reason.
Cap I’m a mouse and keyboard player on DCS and I’m considering buying this module but last time I tested it on the DCS “try them all” event the aircraft responded VERY slowly to stick input. Can you please tell me if the F16 still has a slow pitch input when using mouse and keyboard?
Why do you want to spend money on more modules when you can get a stick for less than a full prize module ? You can get the Thrustmaster T.16000m for ~60€ I would definetly go with a stick rather than a new module.

Yes it turns slower because IRL the stick in the F16 doesn't really move (works by pressure on a stick Vs moving a stick like most aircraft). I'm guessing this is EDs attempt to integrate this through code. My advice if you're a keyboard/mouse player, is to spend your money in getting some sort of stick, or ideally HOTAS setup. if you can't afford the one you want, or it's out of stock right now, I would still advise spending a SMALL amount on a second hand thing from somewhere, until you're able to get the one you want, because moving up the stick-hotas-TrackIR-pedals-VR path increases your enjoyment and immersion massively with each step. I just did a search on Amazon, and unfortunately that comment about prices and availability seems accurate, but I would still try for a cheap second hand stick - I mean if u can get hold of something that's pretty good still for 10 euro off eBay or whatever, it's not gonna hold up your module wish list for too long
Hornet rating Viper (sustained) seems pretty off to me, even in game, both of them without pylons? I know the hornet has more hardpoints (more drag from pylons / ordinance) but still... I'm pretty sure the Viper does outrate the Hornet?🤔 Not any sort of expert, even in DCS tho, so I don't really know
The dcs viper seems Abit lackluster. It feels about 4 feet of the ends wings are missing. Compared to the BMS viper it can't rate at all. I flew them back to back. At 450-500 knots in a big mouth block 50, real pilots say they can't do anything with the stick that will slow a clean jet down. This does not happen in dcs. This does happen in bms. This leads me to believe the aircraft could be somewhat underperforming. The straight line engine performance seems correct however in dcs.
You got 3 main types of drag, and imo the F16 in DCS has way too much airframe drag assigned, when pulling alpha... This is caused by sticking more and more of the plane across the direction of airflow, and it seems to be far too high, no matter clean or fully loaded. Meanwhile the air resistance values seem fine, so the straight line/ low alpha seems good. Compare it turning to something like the sabre, a module on the other end of this penalty value
I wish I could say the same, my radios are broken 9/10 times, and while I'll hear the tower or tankers talking to me or others, they will almost never respond when I contact them
Gs are an acceleration measurement. Earth's gravity is 1G, and you accelerate or turn, you experience more Gs according to the acceleration that's exerted on you. Alpha is the angle of attack measurement (so and angle measurement). The angle of attack is the angle the airflow makes with the plane of your airframe. To very grossly explain it, at higher speeds when you pull hard on the stick, you eat a lot of Gs with a quite big alpha, while at slower speeds you'll have a bigger alpha and less Gs
@@haonanzhang6759 Viper is easier :) The systems in the viper are very easy you dont even have to switch between subsystem. But both are similar and easy to learn

It's subjective, but I have to disagree on the FBW. The F-16C FBW is among the most restrictive in the game, completely obliterates any AOA nose authority, and even worse it adds significant input lag about twice that of an ancient TV with all the post processing turned on. There is not even any FBW override, so despite being a great BVR and energy fighter, for ACM it's like fighting with a fat baby sitter sitting on your chest.
I actually enjoy the AoA restriction, I know it's counter to what I said in the vid, but I find it helps me from completely stalling out. I guess a necessary evil.
I can'T really understand how the A10C is always said to be the most difficult plane. It was my first plane right when I bought DCS (came civil aircrafts in FSX) and I found it to be very straight forward to learn even without any idea about weapons or militairy aircraft. In contrast, my second plane, the F18 - which seems comparable to the F16 - is still sooo much more complex to me, especially the Radar and SA screens in A2A mode. For me, this is the most complex aircraft, the A10C is more like a 3/5.
You need a big transducer installed directly under your seat and simshaker for aviators. If you don't you are missing a whole different Simulator. Essentially a real one. Fly by wire in the f-18 wont bother you one bit. You will automatically fly different to compensate for the tremendous feedback.
Nice to learn about the current FBW stall behavior. Some time back I tried that and got completely different and nasty outcome. I had a lot of altitude for minutes of fall, but it seemed the plane fought me to keep it horizontally leveled and prevent me from pointing nose down. No matter what I did it didn't allow me to fix the attitude and regain speed so I am happy this seems to be fixed.
I have to say, when you were talking about difficulty to learn a specific aircraft, the problem you have with A10 for example is that you fly all of the planes, that is TONS of info for your brain, for anyone brain, I have only F-16C and FA-18C and it is tons of info, and I'm gonna be busy learning them in depth for a long time. If you look at the real life pilots, they only fly one aircraft at the time and for a very good reason, one being there is not that many aircraft, the other being that they will perform much better focusing on one rather than 4 aircraft. DCS pilots tend to fly 10 aircraft... you simply cant learn them all in depth at the same time, it is impossible.
Man that's what's putting me off. I would love to play DCS but I don't have a gaming pc for starters. So would I get my worth just to play this? I don't know.
@@jamesnorth7318 no sense to get a gaming PC just for this because your going to need a flightstick and head tracking or VR as well so it will cost a fortune. For me I play tons of games usually with my friends but damn if this game isn't rewarding when you start to figure it out. I've been playing this game for 3 days with this plane and can take off, operate the radar, weapons and landing is still a work in progress but there's nothing like it.
Great video. I have to disagree with the sound. With the hornet if you listen you can actually hear the wind been pulled into the intakes. As well if you watch the difference in ACM vids the sounds from the hornet beats the f16 sounds hands down. Great video and thanks a million.
CAP is correct about fuselage...but I think its the paint color which throws it off....and if you look at true HD photos of a F-16 and compare it to this module....its pretty damn close.
Hey Cap, thanks for the great videos. One suggestion, it would be great to see some on how to handle ACM, for example how an f16 or f15 etc should handle having a rate fighter f18 etc on it's tail in guns range & visa versa. Best ways to turn the tables etc. Thanks

Just bought the F-16 a month ago. Love it. I keep seeing people trying to decide between F-18 or F-16, and it's honestly a very difficult decision. I own both and while I did enjoy the hornet for a long time, I have to agree with Cap and the others that there's something lifeless about the way the FBW is modeled in the hornet. Maybe the new sound effects they just released will help it but even though the hornet is a navy jet with the added mission of navy operations, it's just not as fun to fly as the F-16 imo.
@@jansvoboda4293 The F-14 is indeed awesome, and more interesting overall to fly than the hornet. But as in real life it's not that great in knife fight.
It might be a kind of smoke-effect...but in real it is vortex. This effect helps build up more lift in fact. Thats why the wing-root is far to the front.
@@grimreapers Yes. And Acceleration. I would easily hit mach 1.8 in a clean F18 before and I could actually hit mach 1.15(I think) on mil power. Now I struggle to hit mach 1.7 and it takes forever to get there. i tried it a while back when the Stable version had not yet nerfed the power and the difference was significant although I can't recall the actual numbers. I would suggest you simply try a quick hop in the hornet. If I'm right you'll notice the difference immediately. Just rerun one of your speedtests or acceleration tests.
I have the F16 module and it's absolutly amazing. I live near the military airfield with F16's and my hause is at the landing approach loop. The sounds in game are exacly like the real one fly by's. But I've bought a gaming laptop, lost my old screen and I need a bigger screen now, because playing dcs with this small 17 inch screen is painfull
Its not subjective if the plane cannot be damaged unless the pilot is sniped through the windshield because it has no damage model in a combat simulation game that thrives on combat realism.....lol Is DCS paying you now old buddy ? I can't argue the F-16 today, but where it was when it launched was without question the worst launch x5 in probably all of flight game history. It was a seriously lacking pretty shell that cost 80$ and came in God mode whether you wanted it or not. That was just one of many, but that one alone makes it a completely broken module right out of the gate. It broke two records that day. The worst launch in all DCS history, and the most expensive launch in DCS history. ;)
It’s for pilots to put their luggage in when flying to a different location, so it has no use in DCS. Highly recommend the F-16! It was my first module and it’s so much fun.
Bruh, i believe he knows the difference between the leading edge flaps and the wings bending xD he was just refering to the wings bending due to the aerodynamic forces acting on the wings.
After a while we realised the 1-5 whole number thing wouldn't work, but couldn't change it as had already done lots of modules. So had to increase accuracy via that weird method.
@@grimreapers I understand the problem, but I think with accuracy it becomes meaningless. Before you know it we have 4.74 or something. With whole numbers it's easier. If a game is 3/5 it doesn't suck, but if it's 4,5 what does that mean? See? Anyway, I see the numbers are a guide. That's my opinion.

Is that kinetic chart available to view, or is it for TH-cam viewing only? I also was taking a look at the Eurofighter Typhoon, and I'm honestly a little worried about it curb-stomping and breaking the game when it arrives in a couple years. Its performance numbers are nuts, making Eagles and Vipers pale in comparison.
Great video, my favourite DCS aircraft. The tyres do have tread lines, it needs the light to be at the correct angle to notice them!

I was gonna say that. You can see the tread where the tire is illuminated by that nose light, and the rest is just too dark to really see.

What really gets me is the fact there aren't any of those giant beams, splitting up your view of the beautiful graphics of DCS.

I don't know why but your F-16 external engine sounds are completely different from mine, and I have no mods installed. Also I can hear quite a difference from mil power to afterburner, maybe something's wrong with your F-16?
Are you running the beta version? The GR team uses the Beta version, not the standard release. I've noticed there are a lot of different sounds in the Beta version for some reason.

Cap I’m a mouse and keyboard player on DCS and I’m considering buying this module but last time I tested it on the DCS “try them all” event the aircraft responded VERY slowly to stick input. Can you please tell me if the F16 still has a slow pitch input when using mouse and keyboard?
Why do you want to spend money on more modules when you can get a stick for less than a full prize module ?

I would definetly go with a stick rather than a new module.

Yes it turns slower because IRL the stick in the F16 doesn't really move (works by pressure on a stick Vs moving a stick like most aircraft). I'm guessing this is EDs attempt to integrate this through code.
My advice if you're a keyboard/mouse player, is to spend your money in getting some sort of stick, or ideally HOTAS setup. if you can't afford the one you want, or it's out of stock right now, I would still advise spending a SMALL amount on a second hand thing from somewhere, until you're able to get the one you want, because moving up the stick-hotas-TrackIR-pedals-VR path increases your enjoyment and immersion massively with each step. I just did a search on Amazon, and unfortunately that comment about prices and availability seems accurate, but I would still try for a cheap second hand stick - I mean if u can get hold of something that's pretty good still for 10 euro off eBay or whatever, it's not gonna hold up your module wish list for too long

Hornet rating Viper (sustained) seems pretty off to me, even in game, both of them without pylons? I know the hornet has more hardpoints (more drag from pylons / ordinance) but still... I'm pretty sure the Viper does outrate the Hornet?🤔

The dcs viper seems Abit lackluster. It feels about 4 feet of the ends wings are missing. Compared to the BMS viper it can't rate at all. I flew them back to back. At 450-500 knots in a big mouth block 50, real pilots say they can't do anything with the stick that will slow a clean jet down. This does not happen in dcs. This does happen in bms. This leads me to believe the aircraft could be somewhat underperforming. The straight line engine performance seems correct however in dcs.
You got 3 main types of drag, and imo the F16 in DCS has way too much airframe drag assigned, when pulling alpha... This is caused by sticking more and more of the plane across the direction of airflow, and it seems to be far too high, no matter clean or fully loaded. Meanwhile the air resistance values seem fine, so the straight line/ low alpha seems good.
Compare it turning to something like the sabre, a module on the other end of this penalty value
Until someone gets hold of the Hornet EM chart I think we can only guess still...

Gs are an acceleration measurement. Earth's gravity is 1G, and you accelerate or turn, you experience more Gs according to the acceleration that's exerted on you.
Alpha is the angle of attack measurement (so and angle measurement). The angle of attack is the angle the airflow makes with the plane of your airframe.
To very grossly explain it, at higher speeds when you pull hard on the stick, you eat a lot of Gs with a quite big alpha, while at slower speeds you'll have a bigger alpha and less Gs

But both are similar and easy to learn

It's subjective, but I have to disagree on the FBW. The F-16C FBW is among the most restrictive in the game, completely obliterates any AOA nose authority, and even worse it adds significant input lag about twice that of an ancient TV with all the post processing turned on. There is not even any FBW override, so despite being a great BVR and energy fighter, for ACM it's like fighting with a fat baby sitter sitting on your chest.
I actually enjoy the AoA restriction, I know it's counter to what I said in the vid, but I find it helps me from completely stalling out. I guess a necessary evil.

My favorite, Bubble Canopy... all I need to say. Also, you have two canopy options. If you go into special settings you can choose clear or tinted.

I can'T really understand how the A10C is always said to be the most difficult plane. It was my first plane right when I bought DCS (came civil aircrafts in FSX) and I found it to be very straight forward to learn even without any idea about weapons or militairy aircraft.
In contrast, my second plane, the F18 - which seems comparable to the F16 - is still sooo much more complex to me, especially the Radar and SA screens in A2A mode. For me, this is the most complex aircraft, the A10C is more like a 3/5.
Yeah, my first DCS plane was the A-10C it was easy asf to learn, i found it way more difficult to learn the F/A-18C

As a complete noob to DCS. One reason I would pick this as my first module is the canopy/cock-pit visibility.
You need a big transducer installed directly under your seat and simshaker for aviators. If you don't you are missing a whole different Simulator. Essentially a real one. Fly by wire in the f-18 wont bother you one bit. You will automatically fly different to compensate for the tremendous feedback.
Nice to learn about the current FBW stall behavior. Some time back I tried that and got completely different and nasty outcome. I had a lot of altitude for minutes of fall, but it seemed the plane fought me to keep it horizontally leveled and prevent me from pointing nose down. No matter what I did it didn't allow me to fix the attitude and regain speed so I am happy this seems to be fixed.
I have to say, when you were talking about difficulty to learn a specific aircraft, the problem you have with A10 for example is that you fly all of the planes, that is TONS of info for your brain, for anyone brain, I have only F-16C and FA-18C and it is tons of info, and I'm gonna be busy learning them in depth for a long time.
If you look at the real life pilots, they only fly one aircraft at the time and for a very good reason, one being there is not that many aircraft, the other being that they will perform much better focusing on one rather than 4 aircraft. DCS pilots tend to fly 10 aircraft... you simply cant learn them all in depth at the same time, it is impossible.
Man that's what's putting me off. I would love to play DCS but I don't have a gaming pc for starters. So would I get my worth just to play this? I don't know.
@@jamesnorth7318 no sense to get a gaming PC just for this because your going to need a flightstick and head tracking or VR as well so it will cost a fortune. For me I play tons of games usually with my friends but damn if this game isn't rewarding when you start to figure it out. I've been playing this game for 3 days with this plane and can take off, operate the radar, weapons and landing is still a work in progress but there's nothing like it.

Great video. I have to disagree with the sound. With the hornet if you listen you can actually hear the wind been pulled into the intakes. As well if you watch the difference in ACM vids the sounds from the hornet beats the f16 sounds hands down. Great video and thanks a million.
CAP is correct about fuselage...but I think its the paint color which throws it off....and if you look at true HD photos of a F-16 and compare it to this module....its pretty damn close.

Just bought the F-16 a month ago. Love it. I keep seeing people trying to decide between F-18 or F-16, and it's honestly a very difficult decision. I own both and while I did enjoy the hornet for a long time, I have to agree with Cap and the others that there's something lifeless about the way the FBW is modeled in the hornet. Maybe the new sound effects they just released will help it but even though the hornet is a navy jet with the added mission of navy operations, it's just not as fun to fly as the F-16 imo.
For Navy my pick is always going to be F-14, it is by far my favorite module. To such extent that I neglected Viper for quite some time.

It might be a kind of smoke-effect...but in real it is vortex. This effect helps build up more lift in fact. Thats why the wing-root is far to the front.

@@grimreapers Yes. And Acceleration. I would easily hit mach 1.8 in a clean F18 before and I could actually hit mach 1.15(I think) on mil power.
Now I struggle to hit mach 1.7 and it takes forever to get there. i tried it a while back when the Stable version had not yet nerfed the power and the difference was significant although I can't recall the actual numbers. I would suggest you simply try a quick hop in the hornet. If I'm right you'll notice the difference immediately. Just rerun one of your speedtests or acceleration tests.
I have the F16 module and it's absolutly amazing. I live near the military airfield with F16's and my hause is at the landing approach loop. The sounds in game are exacly like the real one fly by's. But I've bought a gaming laptop, lost my old screen and I need a bigger screen now, because playing dcs with this small 17 inch screen is painfull
Try a 15in laptop with w logitech 3D Extreme joystick 😂. Still a blast

Its not subjective if the plane cannot be damaged unless the pilot is sniped through the windshield because it has no damage model in a combat simulation game that thrives on combat realism.....lol Is DCS paying you now old buddy ? I can't argue the F-16 today, but where it was when it launched was without question the worst launch x5 in probably all of flight game history. It was a seriously lacking pretty shell that cost 80$ and came in God mode whether you wanted it or not. That was just one of many, but that one alone makes it a completely broken module right out of the gate. It broke two records that day. The worst launch in all DCS history, and the most expensive launch in DCS history. ;)
The review is about it's state at time of review, not how it was when it launched. It now does have a damage model.

It’s for pilots to put their luggage in when flying to a different location, so it has no use in DCS. Highly recommend the F-16! It was my first module and it’s so much fun.

The 'wing bend' is actually a leading edge flap that deploys at low speeds to increase lift. When you get faster it retracts
nope you can see the wing itself isnt straight in that screen grab, it bends up towards the tip
Bruh, i believe he knows the difference between the leading edge flaps and the wings bending xD he was just refering to the wings bending due to the aerodynamic forces acting on the wings.

After a while we realised the 1-5 whole number thing wouldn't work, but couldn't change it as had already done lots of modules. So had to increase accuracy via that weird method.

With whole numbers it's easier. If a game is 3/5 it doesn't suck, but if it's 4,5 what does that mean?

I also was taking a look at the Eurofighter Typhoon, and I'm honestly a little worried about it curb-stomping and breaking the game when it arrives in a couple years. Its performance numbers are nuts, making Eagles and Vipers pale in comparison.
Sorry the chart is the only thing that I want to keep for myself as it's taken so many hundreds of hours to complete.
