  • A reading from the Preface, Introduction & Chapter 1- "Beginnings"
    Book Description:
This epic biography of Hieromonk Seraphim Rose tells the unique story of a man who, having grown up in a typical American home in southern California, became one of the greatest teachers of Orthodox Christianity in our times, loved and revered throughout Russia and Eastern Europe.
Quoting at length from his letters, journals, manuscripts, recorded lectures and published writings, this book traces Fr. Seraphim's intense search for truth and his philosophical development, setting forth his message and offering a glimpse into the soul of a man who lived, even while on this earth, in the otherworldly Kingdom of God.
A greatly revised version of Not of This World, this new Life of Fr. Seraphim incorporates years of new research and includes much additional material. Because it deals closely with events in the recent history of Orthodoxy in America, the book has been reviewed prior to publication by clergy, monastics and laypeople from most of the Orthodox jurisdictions represented in this country.

I’ve been Orthodox for six years now and have read many great books on Holy Orthodoxy. But without question this is my favorite book. I have it on both kindle and paperback. I’ve read completely through it about five times. It’s a big book and takes a while to read but each time through I get more from it. At times when I feel my zeal flagging or my heart growing cool towards things of Christ God, I pick back up this book and begin to read again. Never fails to pull me into the Lord Jesus closer. Blessed Fr. Seraphim, pray to God for us☦️

No idea why I took so much interest in listening to every word of this. I'm going to watch your other two videos reading the book and I expect I'll go ahead and order it. I've been aware of Seraphim Rose for some time, did not know that I would possibly be so captivated by listening to a narration about his or anyone's early childhood. Brilliant

I love Seraphim Rose. I envy him, in a good way, his genius. He learned Russian and ancient Chinese without a struggle it seems... I think he knew other languages. There is a lesson there.... A genius, who searched for God, first through Eastern philosophy...then discovered the truth in Orthodoxy.

This is a great talk. I first heard about Father Seraphim Rose by reading an artical were it stated" The American Orthodox Priest revered in Russia". I was pretty surprised that an American was revered in the Russian Orthodox Church. The artical stated that Father Rose had kept the flame of Christianity alive during the Communist period and is much loved in Russia. I am a Roman Catholic myself and was was listening to a Catholic Talk on TH-cam when Father Seraphims name was mentioned which bought me here to James. This is an illuminating talk, I was listing to a talk again by a Catholic on St Porphyrios of Greece and his amazing holy charisms. I pray to some orthodox saints recognised in my Church and I am sure I will be praying for Father Seraphims intercession now. I have had success with St Simeon of Aleppo and revere St Charbel Maklouf who I have also prayer an intercession with. Amen to Orthodoxy

Thank you sir! I have returned to Christianity and am pursuing Orthodoxy due to Fr Seraphim Rose. After encountering Jordan Peterson 6 years ago and trying to make sense of a sudden onslaught of dreams and experiences I could not I voraciously went through Jung, world religions, Science, theosophy and John Vervaeke’s massive project. It really required Dante, Jonathan Pageau, and finally, Seraphim Rose to point to the deep and sophisticated works of the early Church fathers, and how they applied discernment to religious experiences. They clearly were able to integrate stoicism and Neoplatonism in a manner subjugated to the highest good, just as the work Christ The Eternal Tao can subjugate and integrate the truths in real Taoism that helped Fr Rose break free from Alan Watts.
I am also thoroughly convinced that the presentation of Christianity as incapable of doing such a thing involves a massive blind spot in our culture and history to Orthodoxy. I believe Fr Rose is correct to assert the prelest and inflation in the schism and the Catholic Church creating an anti Christ chiliasm that moves through the enlightenment, Rousseau and up through Jung, Chardin, Nietzsche, and New Age, and would include Vervaeke and Peterson as better faith actors playing their enemie’s game. The criterion of spiritual discernment and orthodox belief can separate the wheat from the chaff for any truth there.
But I do believe all those projects to be an arrogant and demonic attempt to do Christianity better with a false argument that it must be transcended. I never thought of myself as evil or occult. I thought I was coming from a pragmatic standpoint through Peterson. I’m completely convinced by Fr Rose that I was actually involved in evil occultism and primal agentic/pagan religion after applying this discernment and the trying of the spirits (who I thought of as archetypes and angels) to the dogmas and Jesus prayer. They either left, broke apart, or haven’t returned

@trotics Hahaha, glad to see you again. I'm not a translation expert on your Bible question. There's some errors in English translations of Orthodox study bibles, the Russian and Greek are better, but I'll ask my priest which one he recommends. There's a patristic faith discord server too that can answer a lot of questions, and if you notify a church on the phone that you are visiting you can ask them too. God bless.

Why are so many of Fr. Seraphim's books (as well as the splendid biography) currently out of print. One would think that the works of such an important Orthodox writer would be made available by a number of Orthodox publishers.

FSR had a number of heretical beliefs, which he taught. First of which is the pagan based teachings of the toll houses, which deny the triumph of the Resurrection. This perniscious belief is a black mark on his legacy. His essayist of this pagan based cult was blatenly, intellectually, and spiritually dishonest.

@@lordplebius483 not really because this initial commentator is simply wrong 😅 denying the toll houses is a grave error since it is very clear in many of the church fathers and modern day saints, our prayers and liturgics. I mean literally the canon to the guardian angel talks about defending us in the toll houses. Anyone who denies it needs help.
