there's a guy called dosdude1 who makes patches so older macs can run newer mac os versions, i've not looked into it in a while but the last i remember seeing that any macbook that natively supports catalina should work with big sur alright, i've got the 2012 macbook pro and personally i'm gonna hold off on upgrading to big sur until the patcher (when it releases) is more updated and has less bugs as imo catalina will still be fine for the majority of apps
I have 2.9Ghz version of the mid 2012 macbook pro. Upgraded to 500 GB SSD and 16GB RAM, and this is my go to laptop for writing and light media consumption. Its a classic beauty and has this awesome keyboard with excellent travel and response. It is great you can upgrade the SSD and RAM, something which is sadly no longer possible on Apple computers. The only drawback for this machine compared to the later retina models is the screen, which really is not that nice to work on compared to newer Macbooks. But then again, you can't have it all for 50-100 USD. By the way I also upgraded the OS to Monterey (patched) and it runs really great, has not slowed down at all compared to Catalina.
Well done Dylan! The MD101LL/A (2012 13" Macbook Pro 2.5GHz) is one of our best sellers nearly a decade after it's release! A couple of facts: Apple sold the 2012 until 2016 and it's Apple's longest seller Mac. It's the LAST of the Steve Jobs era. It's one of the last upgradable Macs and can have both RAM and drive upgrades. (as shown and noted by Dylan). It's also very easy to repair in comparison. You can easily swap most parts including the battery! This Mac is upgradable to OS Catalina but no further! We have a detailed video on this Mac if anyone's interested and sell them starting at $299!
I am running Mac OS 11.1 and MS Windows 10 using Parallels 11 on my early 2011 MacBook Pro. 16 Gb ram and SSD TB drive. It runs smoothly and fast. Easy to repair, full backup on another SSD. Apple refuses to sell parts but I can obtain them elsewhere.
Great Video. I currently have the Mid 2012 13' with Retina, 8gb Ram. I was pondering upgrading when the new 2021 MacBook Pro comes out. This evaluation helped a lot since the speakers just went. I think I'll hold onto it for now and not rush for the newest shiny thing.
I’ve had my mid-2012 MBP upgraded with RAM and an SSD for about a year now, and It works very well for video rendering, 24/96 multitrack recording in Pro Tools, and other processor intense apps. The 15” unit has both audio in and out jacks, which can also be used for optical digital audio, and having the DVD drive still in it has not been an issue.
Love my mid 2012 MacBook Pro i5! I bought it a week ago after my older MacBook didn't work so well. Did a great trade-in and I'm REALLY happy now I have SSD installed as well.I thought I would check out your comments on it. I definitely did the right thing swapping out my 2009 for this.
I have two of these running (used by my kids) and these were some of the greatest portable Machines Apple ever built. Equipped with 10Gigs of RAM and SSDs they are still absolutely usable, even for casual gaming of Roblox, Star Stable, Minecraft and the likes. Office Apps are no problem at all, obviously. Nothing serious ever broke, Charging Cables and Batteries had to be replaced once on the way, though. Still, they are out of OS support now and for my personal use I have the M1 Macbook Air which is amazing and far superior in every aspect. So yes, you can still use the old machine, but I would not spend any cash for it today.
I took a MacBook Pro mid 2012 and replaced it with 8gb ram and ssd. It’s smooth as new. However it cannot be upgraded to Big sur. This could be potential issue in future. Also some apps start holding features which can only be functional on newer macs like zoom doesn’t let u apply virtual background without green screen.
Running 10.15.2 with 250 GB SSD, and 16 GB RAM. I use it for school (ppts, word doc) and internet surfing. It hasn't let me down. I didn't even buy it new, I got it 5 years ago refurbished from Apple. Upgraded it myself as it was slowing down but now it's as good as newer macbooks.
My mid 2012 mac pro is a tank. It's started running slow recently. Thinking of doing the 16GB RAM & 1TB SSD upgrade...hopefully that makes it run like new again 🤞🏽....thanks for your vid its given me the motivation to tackle this upgrade myself 👍🏽
13" 2012 MBP with 16gig Ram and 512 Gig SSD = running latest OSX 10.15.6 , Final cut pro at 1080p and Affinity suite of apps with out any lag or slow down. The only problem I have is the Battery runs for 3-4 hrs on a charge but when I do Video Editing I plug it in - other wise battery runs out in 1-1.5hrs. Would not get rid of it for anything, its my baby..... Also use a 2008 8 core Mac Pro with 24 gig ram and 1TB SSD + 3gigs of HD, still good for HD and even some 4K video editing..... I hope they will both work for years to come👍👍👍👍. I prefer using the 2012 MBP more than my 2018 MBA any day of the week....
This was very helpful! I am about to start up some content creation and someone refurbished a 2012 Macbook and sending it as a gift. I was wondering how it stacked up.
I just uncovered my 2013 mcp and I am so suprised that the battery (original) is still good and the actual feel of the mac felt so much nicer than even modern day machines
Your MBP 2013 can run on Big Sur OS since it can upgrade from the Catalina or High Sierra based OS..and that was the final upgrades and still getting security updates until 2023.
Good job. The batteries also always need to be replaced irrespective of the cycle count. They are almost 10 years old. I got a new battery from Walmart Online Store for $38 with free shipping. My 2012 Macbook Pro is amazing and cost me a total of $350. 8gb Ram, 1TB SSD and brand new battery. Fantastic!
I bought a Mid 2012 MacBook pro brand new when they were launched. It lasted forever, until it died, working perfectly. Then I bought an used one for my youngest daughter, and works great. Yesterday I bought the same model, used of course, for me. It works flawlessly. It has a 1Tb hard drive. I ordered yesterday 16Gb RAM upgrade. I am in love with this model. You might find limitations. But, for moderate use, this is perfect for me. Great review video!
Just found one at my local pawn shop for $30 as is with claim that it was password locked. Got it and turned out the previous person that had it deleted the partition and someone didn't know how to do recovery. Loaded the OS and it works great. Has a 1TB hdd, 12GB ram, and i5. I plan on swapping the 4GB stick to an 8GB and throwing in a SSD. Not sure what to use it for yet but djing, music, video editing, and just learning to use a Mac sounds like a good plan.
For me, yes. It's absolutely perfect. It does everything I need it to do without any lag whatsoever. And Apple still hasn't released a new Mac that I've found compelling enough to to replace this thing with.
@@roolaing Search Mr. MACKINTOSH, There is YT video on how to update BigSur on unsupported MacBook pro, I followed the instructions and it works great on MbPro 2012
Hell yes. I just bought one from school unloading old stuff. $115 dollars. It upgrades to Catalina. I just put in an SSD. The battery was a little old. but for $35, you can replace if you need to use it unplugged.
Most of these 2012 go for $400 on eBay 😐😐🤦♂️ I can't get a decent deal on it, at that price I might as well get a used Mac mini for $550 that's what more powerful for only a $100 more. Got a mid 2012 from daughter. Replacing battery and up the ram from 4 to 8 while I’m inside. Thanks for the info. I’m writing code for some electronic/logic projects so I don’t need much. Still finding my way around Mac coming from a Windows environment but I’m learning.
Thanks for the video. I was thinking of getting rid of my Mid 2012 Macbook until I came across your video. Can you give a tutorial on how to switch out the hard drive and Ram?
I love the idea of removing the CD for the old hard drive. As a novice, I think we would be able to do this upgrade ourselves. It may not perform like modern Macbooks, but it will do what I need it to do for blogging, podcasting, and general writing. the upgrades will definitely help with speed. Thanks for a great video.
A $56 16GB RAM upgrade, and a $49 Kingston SSD upgrade does magic!!! I got a mid 2012 with an i5, for $150. I did the desperately needed upgrades. Runs like a new MacBook! It originally had a pathetic 4GB of RAM, and a shotty 10 year old HDD.
@@sosayo7881 bought it. Only thing is, no iMovie. Can't be installed and I'm on the highest software version it'll go to. Keeps saying I need Big Sur. 😩

The battery in these are not bad and I used to get 6 hours from mine, at least, when running High Sierra. Mojave and Catalina utterly destroyed the battery life on these machines.
Managed to grab one for $120 *150$ thanks to taxes and shipping* I don't think they're worth it for $300 - $400 due to it's processor, atleast a 2012 model that is, when you can likely find a more recent model at that price range. Thanks for the insightful video man

****YES THESE MID 2012 Macbook Pro laptops are well worth buying and/or upgrading. For a $200.00 (approx) investment I added a Crucial 1 TB SSD, 16 GB of Crucial RAM, a new battery and a bit of my free time. I now have a brand new looking, pretty fast running little laptop. I loaded High Sierra and so far I have experienced no troubles at all. It boots fast. Applications run pretty well. Don't ever assume that an 8 year old computer can't perform and needs to be replaced.
i’ve been looking for a cheap macbook for a while after i asked my mom to go get a laptop for me and she ended up coming with a 100$ chrome book that really isn’t good with gaming or editing content. and i’ve finally found a macbook for about 400$ so now i’m just going through reviews trying to see if it’s worth it since i also have the choice to get the iphone xr.
iPhone XR will have the newer technology and if anything you can try editing on Luma Fusion on the phone! For 400$ it’ll be tough and a new phone compared to this MacBook will always a win!
Nice! How's the boot up time with Catalina OS? I just swapped the HDD with an SSD (still waiting for the 8gb RAM to arrive). So far my boot up time is around 1 minute..
My Macbook Pro Mid 2012 Works just like the same as New One. I changed Nothing. Moreover i have installed Windows too using Bootcamp. yesterday i upgraded from Elcapitan to Catalina and it works Perfect just as New. Mostly i use it for Programming .
@Kon Akina 今愛紀梛 - (3D13) also I have got the 2012 macbook pro , I am gonna consider changing the parts from 4gb to 8gb ram but do you think it will kill the battery?
@Kon Akina 今愛紀梛 - (3D13) other people told me that upgrading the ram to 8gb wont affect the battery as much since it doesn't require a lot of battery anyways, so I'm gonna change and see how it feels
Just using chrome and iMessage with my mid 2012 13" it gets about 2-3 hours. My battery is also severely degraded. I want to replace it but I don't want to spend the $100 lol
@Kon Akina 今愛紀梛 - (3D13) You need to update your OS to run the zoom app. And your laptop might be slow if you’re running a failing hard drive (upgrade it to SSD) or low ram (4GB and lower is not enough)
I'd probably go for the 1st option. I've never used a Mac either but today i decided to buy a 2012 Macbook Pro in good condition for a reasonable price ($260-ish). The 2 big reasons being that 1.) If i dont like/cant get used to Mac OS, then it wasn't too big a financial loss. 2.) I've seen WAY too many Louis Rossman videos of how unreliable and poorly engineered the newer ones are, not to mention the complete lack of user upgradeability/repairability lol
Lmao good! After seeing this video I don’t feel so bad with my 13” MacBook Pro 2012, had this for 6 years now. I upgraded it from 500gb to 1TB ssd, and upgraded the ram to 16GB. It still have the DVD drive in it tho. Just using it to remote work from home and for music
I honestly wish this MacBook along with newer MacBooks were plastic with rubber bottoms like the unibody 2010 A1342 version. So there would be no issue with dents and stuff like that
I literally just purchased this laptop like 2 mins ago. (W/ retina) I hope it’s worth the buy. ?? I just needed something to help me edit better. 🤷🏾♀️
Just make sure you swap the RAM and HDD if they haven’t already. Also they cap the software release at Catalina. It’s smooth and performs well but you can’t download Xcode so if you do need to there is an open-source solution to get Monterey on your computer.
Picked one up for 100$ on a Facebook Market whim in good shape. i7 12gb memory. My first macbook. Love how smooth it runs on Sierra considering its age. Might upgrade it with dual ssds.
I have this model and sadly no, as it is, it can barely handle current day google chrome, but, with an upgrade of 4 gbs of ram to 16 gb of ram, this computer is a great web surfing/iMovie editing computer
Ive had mine since 2014. Upgraded to 250 SSD, then removed optical drive and added 500 SSD. (Kinda screwed up because I still don't know how to run them together as one SSD...) Then upgraded RAM to 8 GB and in 202o running strong and getting me through my second Bachelors Degree/Nursing School. If anyone could help with the running the 250 and 500 SSD's together as one I would really appreciate the help.
Hi Dylan. Thanks for this video. I'm planning on upgrading soon like you did since I just purchased a Crucial MX500 1TB. You showed how it could manage and edit 1080 videos. Just wondering your experience with it editing 4K videos as well as the rest here? I'm not going to edit extensively but only occasionally. Thank you.
Just purchased a mid 2012 mcp through Amazon and want to upgrade. Question, you mentioned you swapped ssd to a 120gb, but you listed a 512gb ssd will that still work with everything else you did?
I’m thinking about giving up my 2014 Mac Mini I bought new in 2016 in favor of the 2012 MacBook Pro, mainly for the sake of portability, meaning that I can not only watch TH-cam videos, but mainly use it as a work computer to edit my own videos at home or on the go.

Fantastic!
3rd party battery?
watching this on my mid 2012 13 inch pro. I am so proud.
@00- How much did you pay, I am looking for a macbook of that vintage im wondering what a good price is, thank you in advance.
I just purchased a mid 2012 and checked on the Apple site, it says the max RAM is 8Gb (2x4), is it ok to bump to 16?
@@kenbrown9500 Yes! To for the 16Gb! I just received mine from Amazon and it makes a world of difference!!! You won't regret!
@@kenbrown9500 they will sell in pairs (2 x 8Gb)
16 GB 1600 hz DDR3 (Transcend) 1TB Samsung Evo Plus and now BigSur 11.1 on my A1278 MbPro mid 2012. Still Rocks 🎸
How did you install Big Sur?

There are 2 methods if you need I can share, they exist in YT too, just follow the same to get BigSur using the trick
@@wildcraft1062 that would be great thanks

But I need portability. What school was it that you got it from ? College, highschool ? Did they have like a certain date selling stuff ?
@@ifiwantyoutofeel loyola University.
Yes they auction it.
You can't find it on ebay because people like me find them and then sell them for 400 on ebay.
If I could go back in time I would buy every one the had. But I didn't know. I could it for a girlfriend to be nice as hers broke. I got 512gb sad for 51 dollars at microcenter. It's very fast now. Boots in seconds.
Should I buy it now? Though its quite old
I’m planning on buying one next month
I feel the laptop is just really strong
just bought one with 16gb ram and 500gb hdd, awesome!
yea i have one about the same as urs i also got start of last month but i think you should keep for at least 5 years because macbooks dont slow that fast and you can also swap things out to make it fast. again amazing and thanks

Thank you for spending time out of your day to make these amazing videos. Have a good day!
A $56 16GB RAM upgrade, and a $49 Kingston SSD upgrade does magic!!!
I got a mid 2012 with an i5, for $150.
I did the desperately needed upgrades. Runs like a new MacBook!
It originally had a pathetic 4GB of RAM, and a shotty 10 year old HDD.
which ram did you buy been looking but don't know which is best to buy
Just found my sisters old MacBook and I might just fix it up and ask her if I can have it if she doesn’t want it anymore lol
is it worth getting the exact one for 230 dollars preused?
Yes
Is it good in 2022 for $180? It has 16GB RAM and Catalina.
if all things are as it supose to be, is a great price man

I have installed catalina without any problem on same MAC as yours.
The battery in these are not bad and I used to get 6 hours from mine, at least, when running High Sierra. Mojave and Catalina utterly destroyed the battery life on these machines.
Yup I get like 2.5 hrs now on mine lol
Managed to grab one for $120 *150$ thanks to taxes and shipping*
I don't think they're worth it for $300 - $400 due to it's processor, atleast a 2012 model that is, when you can likely find a more recent model at that price range.
Thanks for the insightful video man
Just got myself 13 inch 2011 model after watching the video.. i think worth it to get old mac in 2020
Thanks for the video. You've restored my faith in mine. Worth noting it can output to a monitor in at least 2k with the correct lead.
Does it matter which os you are running to do these upgrades? I’m on Mojave.
Quick question: do you know if a mid-2012 (A-1278) 13" MBP (non-Retina) memory can be upgraded to 16GB? Officially, it's rated for only 8GB. Thanks!
Oh, you answered my question at 2:55. Hahaha! Note to self: Watch first, ask questions later.
Is $330 worth it? Wondering so I can buy ..
Yup im buying it at the same price
I am getting one Friday for 300 :)
Cool, man! Just a little question: is it safe to upgrade to 16GB RAM? Is it still working? :)
yes it is fine, i use it that way
Bro, can you tell me the price of 15" 2012 model?
$200-$300 depends.
from what i’ve found they are kinda expensive like at $400
Man I just brought one for $300 but I’m seeing y’all prices y’all paid. I got did I get finessed?
dam I just paid $37 for my Macbook it's a clean example too. maybe you did get a lil finessed, but either way enjoy it, still a great laptop.
I paid $350 for mine about 2 years ago, and I also had the same thoughts, wondering if I got finessed. YOU DID NOT GET FINESSED! This was the best money I ever spent. It is almost impossible to permanently ruin the firmware. Mine has been jailbroken, and I was able to run Monterey, an OS that they said couldn’t be run on this model.
I decided to load Linux(Linuxlite) on it and don’t even use the Mac OS anymore, but I can if I want to. It is also heavier than the new ones, which to me, equates with durability!
Right on! We do a pretty detailed overview of this model! One of our best sellers nearly a decade later!
Great video thanks. Just bought one for general business use. Looking forward to using it.
Is it wise for me to get warranty for a year or just YOLO it?
Why all TH-cam videos about 2012 MBP Unibody are ALL about 13"🤔
Watching on the 15" a1286😊
i’ve been looking for a cheap macbook for a while after i asked my mom to go get a laptop for me and she ended up coming with a 100$ chrome book that really isn’t good with gaming or editing content. and i’ve finally found a macbook for about 400$ so now i’m just going through reviews trying to see if it’s worth it since i also have the choice to get the iphone xr.
iPhone XR will have the newer technology and if anything you can try editing on Luma Fusion on the phone! For 400$ it’ll be tough and a new phone compared to this MacBook will always a win!
Nice! How's the boot up time with Catalina OS? I just swapped the HDD with an SSD (still waiting for the 8gb RAM to arrive). So far my boot up time is around 1 minute..
I recently put two SSD's in mine, one running Catalina with 16gb of RAM and boot time is about 10-15 seconds
Great, installed the 8gb RAM and it now boots around 30secs
Are they worth updsting

@Kon Akina 今愛紀梛 - (3D13) same lol , if it does then it's off for sale!
Just put a ssd in mine over the weekend and she runs fast like new!!! Just need to sort out this battery life lol
I've got a macbook Pro late 2013 and its working like a new one. You should buy one!
Excellent analysis and spot right on.
Can you add links to the parts that you bought for the upgrade and maybe a link to a video tutorial on how to upgrade it. Thanks
I’ve never had a MacBook and thinking about getting one like this for around $240. Just don’t know if I should do that or get a brand new one

Just for grin's, try running your battery all of the way down below 10% and give it a full charge. See if that helps you out for a short time.
Does the MacBook Pro 2012 use can trade the market with it
I honestly wish this MacBook along with newer MacBooks were plastic with rubber bottoms like the unibody 2010 A1342 version. So there would be no issue with dents and stuff like that
I literally just purchased this laptop like 2 mins ago. (W/ retina) I hope it’s worth the buy. ?? I just needed something to help me edit better. 🤷🏾♀️
What is Retina?
Just make sure you swap the RAM and HDD if they haven’t already. Also they cap the software release at Catalina. It’s smooth and performs well but you can’t download Xcode so if you do need to there is an open-source solution to get Monterey on your computer.
Picked one up for 100$ on a Facebook Market whim in good shape. i7 12gb memory. My first macbook. Love how smooth it runs on Sierra considering its age. Might upgrade it with dual ssds.
