NewJeans is not a copy of Kim Garam. Their concept portrays the natural and youthful look of Korean/Asian girls that is common during their teenage years. It reminds me of GFriend when they debuted with Glass Bead. Just effortlessly beautiful.
I feel like the Lia controversy is due to people viewing comments through a western lens. You have to put her comments into the context of korean beauty standards and expectations in order to understand what she means. While, yes, it is evident that many asian countries are colourist, it originates from the fact that people became tan due to working in the sun, so being pale became associated with class and thus became the standard over time. Additionally, its not necessarily that she meant that having dark skin makes you sexy, but that being tan (or desiring to become tan) is associated with westerner culture, which is more provocative than Korea (a very conservative country). Ultimately, kpop fans need to understand that korean society is not the same as western society, so beauty standards are different and were formed for different reasons. We have to stop being surprised when idols make comments about being pale or tan, when we all know that they heavily whitewash their photos and use makeup to make themselves look paler.
