My dude! I love all the piano love on this man. Richard Blumenthal is the guy! He's actually the only american guy in the band who didn't go to Berklee! He's super nasty and he has a cool jazz project (that I was happy to play drums on) called Blumen! So I actually write a lot of the insturmentals for this band on Guitar Pro (simliar computer software to Finale, Sibelius, Musescore) and then it gets sent to the boys for arrangement and harmonic choice advice. I think because I'm so close to the music on the writing side of things it really makes thinking of parts a lot easier as I'm just really close to the process as opposed to a session job where I just have to learn everything on the spot. In doing this, the parts all kind of grow together organically and it makes it less of a chore to remember all the things that are happening! Also, I never took lessons with Dave at Berklee but he did share a room with Rod Morgenstein (Winger) who I did in fact take lessons from! Dave would pop in from time to time and I swear I chatted with him for about two hours in total over my time at Berklee and he showed a cool finger strretch that has probably kept me from serious hand injuries over the years, the dude is a beast! As far as inspirations go - when I was a child Chad Smith, Lars Ulrich, and Mike Portnoy were my heroes! :D As I got older and went to college a lot of my peers that ended up being absolute savages on the kit started becoming my motivators - Anthony Barone (Babymetal, Shadow Of Intent, Beneath The Massacre), Nate Smith, Matt Garstka, JP Bouvet, and Chris Coleman. SO many absolute sickos at Berklee that it was easy to get lost in the practice room trying to recreate the sounds from them! :D It's funny you mentioned Chris Turner I have a pipedream for this summer to learn both Thomas and Chris's parts for Triggered. We will see if it happens! :D Cheers man!
Did y'all listen to Dark Tranquillity at all because this track especially gave me some of those vibes. Great work your kit sounds fantastic. Cheers man!
Man! Thank you so much for all the information. It all makes total sense to me. Music school is a little pressure cooker of an environment. I compare it to Top Gun! HAHA That's so cool to see who your influences are and who you were running with at Berklee. Some proper monsters. Take care man and thanks for sharing! Andrew
Aviations is painfully underexposed. Seriously. Its hard not to feel genuine emotion listening to these. Theres a lot of great music I adore but there is a genuinely magical quality to some of these Aviations tracks that is unique to them. Top lads that deserve the eyes and ears of the worlds.
It was your first reaction to James that brought me to Aviations. I'm not sure how they flew under my radar, but I'm so glad I found them. James is an absolute monster, but so is everyone else in the band. A true super group!
Wow... This might be my favorite vid that you've reacted to so far. The jazz elements here are amazing! Drumming is amazing and the music is top tier. Gonna have to take a deep dive into this band.
This band is simply unreal. After so many years of prog and having my mind blown so many times, I didnt know it could happen again. But it did when I first came across them a couple years ago. And then again. And again. Coma is, somehow, their masterpiece, and that's a HIGH BAR TO CLEAR. Love this video!
Andy, you really should listen to some of Aviation's songs as is. These drum playthroughs are awesome, but you are missing the fact, that they have a great singer too. Their song "Outliers (Retrospect)" is one of my absolute favourite songs of the last few years.
I've discovered many amazing drummers on this channel but this guy has that special "je ne sais quoi", the "it" factor. So creative, so musical and purposeful. The Fillmaster should be his official nickname. Impressive stuff!
That was absolutely wild and I loved the variety throughout the song! My favorite part is when he threw in a quick trill on the big ride during a calm part, very unusual and a nice bit of spice!
Great video, love it! May I suggest the Adam Janzi drum playthrough of 24 Light-Years by VOLA? The drum lick in that song is phenomenal in itself, and so is the song.
This was freaky freakin' good!!!! Those drums (sound)are dialed in driving that epic song. Twas like a movie score. PowerFull! And the acid jazz style😎
James, the fact that you studied with Rod Morgenstein would be enough for me without ever seeing you play. He's top 3 all time for me. Amazing job here and I'm a fan since Andrew's last reaction. Love your playing!

Day 14 of requesting Austin Archeys playthrough of Into The Earth. Another drummer you need to see Andrew. One of the best in the scene. Master of double strokes. ;) This is a Meinl Cymbals Drum Play-through of Lorna Shores song "Into The Earth". I've never seen a drummer look like he's about to fall asleep playing 290BPM. th-cam.com/video/6wd8HMtgafU/w-d-xo.html
These playthroughs are great, but the band has a great singer, and you don't get to hear him on these videos. Make sure to check out some of their full songs.

"Painfully underexposed" is exactly right!
It was your first reaction to James that brought me to Aviations. I'm not sure how they flew under my radar, but I'm so glad I found them. James is an absolute monster, but so is everyone else in the band. A true super group!
This is heavy!

Yup this is particularly special IMO
That was absolutely wild and I loved the variety throughout the song! My favorite part is when he threw in a quick trill on the big ride during a calm part, very unusual and a nice bit of spice!
How is possible that recording just this track didn't take all day? Amazing!
If you've ever heard the band Dark Tranquillity, this track should sound like an homage. It's like DT goes prog. AVIATIONS is a solid band.
Bro made you headbang! That was great!
I love this!
Excited twss "O" @6:53🤘🏼
Berklee instrumental bands, Intervals,ArchEcho,Aviations, Earthside …many similarities in compositions but all awesome
James really kills it on this one. And Richard's piano....just wow.
This blows my mind, iv watched alot of your videos and this is crazy!!
You’ve got to check out the new project James plays on, The Anchoret, they’ve got three drum play throughs up right now. Album came out last Friday.
Man is an absolute beast. Crazy talent.
Great video, love it!

So, when you gonna dive into the Sleep Token rabbit hole? You won't be disappointed..........
Can't wait
Bruh what kind of Dirk Verbeuren is this?
A very awesome yet not properly recognized drummer is Steve Shelton from the band Confessor...dude is a beast
