- We recently visited Kuala Lumpur with our two kids. We share some of our pros and cons of the visit.

If u are young and want to party, go to Thailand but if u wanna have a great time with your kids and family, Malaysia is the place to go. If u like high expenses and arrogant people, go to Singapore 😅😅
Yeah.. I gotta agree that cities in Malaysia in general are not quite pedestrian friendly. Malaysians rarely walk because the weather is unbearably hot during the day. That was probably one reason why the old town planners did not give the sidewalks much thought. However, new town planners are redesigning wherever possible. The new townhouses are more walkable.. and if you see the area around Bukit Bintang, so much have been done to make it enjoyable to walk there. In the old days, it was so different. If you go to cities like Penang, Ipoh and Melaka.. the sidewalks are even worse. Well. all I can tell you is that I do see a lot of improvements have been put in place. We'll be there..
Yes lets make Malaysian cities walkable and liveable again. DBKL are planning to add more than 300km of sidewalks.
Actually its not about the old cities as most Malaysians back then didn't have own transport, and most of them just walk wherever they go or cycling. The only public transport was rickshaw either by pulling it using the manpower or cycling. Only some people could afford to buy cars those days mostly British who lived in Malaya/Singapore/Borneo.
Then after the country gained the independence, more people could afford to buy motorcycles/vespas included my late dad. In 1980s when the national car was launched the highways were built and the government more focusing the citizens to buy cars, our petrol also heavily subsidised, and Malaysia became a car oriented country and only after that the public transport KTM commuter train/LRT/monorail and modern buses replaced pink mini buses in KL.
Most old towns in Malaysia their roads are quite narrow built by British as it only cater for bicycles, rickshaws or numbers or cars/motorcycles at that time, and most towns actually have 'pedestrians' lane connecting the shop or in Malay called as 'kaki lima' which are uneven and not that wheelchair or trolley friendly.
Singapore had renovated all their 'kaki lima' to make it even/flat and pedestrians friendly and eventhoug the weather is the same as in Malaysia, the city is far more pedestrian friendly with shaded tree. Malaysians always blaming for the hot weather, in fact it is not the real issue if it designed more walkable and shaded as Singapore did. Some parts of KL already improved with project of River of Life as example around Masjid India, Tuanku Abdur Rahman (TAR) and Masjid Jamek.
I could say, Kuching is the best example city of Malaysia which is pedestrian friendly so far., but all cities and towns in Malaysia are really needed to improve to be more pedestrian friendly mostly for disable people (wheelchairs) and kids strollers.
It worth mentioning that we also receive a lot of rain unpredictably which makes walking less desirable.
Yes, I think KL is a family destination, lovely pros, and of course, the cons, as a reminder, although KL isn't a perfect city, is generally good for foreign tourists.
I think that no city is perfect but Malaysia is fabulous for tourists!

The next time you visit Malaysia remember to visit the UNESCO heritage sites in Penang and Malacca and also the French Village in Bukit Tinggi. If you have more time you should visit Langkawi Island.
French village is kind of boring compared to genting

It was not on our radar at all until quite recently! It ended up being the most affordable place to go for Christmas. We were totally blown away! I am so glad that you are adding it to your list!

@stephenconnolly5904 hot and humid! Our kids are not used to the heat, so we did a lot of indoor activities. Genting Highlands was delightful because it was so cool. You can rent lots of air bnb's with pools, that was the highlight for our kids I think. We really loved it, but very hot and humid, like I said.
To put it in simple words, Malaysia is one of the perfect holiday destinations for families travelling together for the very first time. Especially when budget and choices of foods are a top priority. 😊👌
It is absolutely true! I didn't have Malaysia on my bucket list of travels. I'm so happy we went! I think it should be a very popular place for families!

Did you bring your kids to the beautiful KLCC park. It has a massive playground and also a huge wadding pool, both free of charge.

It's nice to see your kids had fun at few of the places for kids in Malaysia. There are many more places that are family friendly in Malaysia like the Sunway Lagoon near KL and Legoland in Johor, but both places are very expensive for foreign tourists, like Genting Highlands. But yesterday I saw a video from a foreign couple who visited the Lost world of Tambun water park, they spent a whole day at the park for USD33 each. It's has a beautiful water themed park, a zoo, night attractions and a spring pool, I think that's a good value for money. Tambun is near Ipoh, the capital for the state of Perak, about 2 hours from KL. Make it in your future list to do in Malaysia. 😀

Sidewalks can be dangerous. Drain covers may caved into the drain due to wear and tear. We do not hv long sidewalks, due to town planning of old school style. No one walks due to rain and heat. We drive mostly. Once the metal bars rusted due to the elements, the concrete will break
It was noticeable when walking with the kids. I don't think it would have been an issue at all if we didn't have them. The convenience of Grabs really made up for it for us as tourists though

Next time u come to malaysia go to other parts of the country..penang..melaka..JB..kuantan..kota bahru, langkawi, cameron highlands...and of course borneo Sabah & Sarawak...even better experience...go see the orangutan & wild life...and so much more lovely places food & people. Its all within a 3 to 4 hour travel distance. You will definitely enjoy it

Genting Highlands is pronounced as Genting Highlands, not Jenting Highlands. Good quality raincoats are sold at shops

It isn't a deal breaker, but it was annoying. The pros really outweighed the cons! We loved KL!

That cost only RM5.
We bought them AT Genting Highlands. We absolutely should have bought some before we went! They were more expensive than the lunch we had there (which was amazing) . It was unexpected. You can buy them all over KL for cheaper. We were in the park and they got us good 😆
