They still might be.... noone else can put so many styles into one album, with songs feeling like hard rock, soft rock, pop, industrial, acousti, orchestral, folk, metal and punk- and still sounds like the same entity, fluid.
From January 96, the start of the MCIS Tour, until the Halloween show in '98, they killed every stage they took. Even the Adore tour they were so dynamic that many fans didn't get it. And let's not even talk about when Jimmy came back. SP is another level band.
Hearing that opening out there in front raw you can really appreciate what a great riff it is. No one comes close to Billy when it comes to matching great riffs with stellar choruses.

I might just be crazy, but with the speed they're playing at, I could definitely pick up some Thrash Metal inspirations. This song and performance of it KICKED ASS!
the best way to watch this video is to open it in two different tabs, mute the sound on the one you're actually watching, and start and stop the video until the audio lines up with the video...
This is a great song. And it sounds really good live. I am not the biggest fan of Smashing Pumpkins. But they got on my radar in the 90s and impressed me enough to buy an album or two. And that's not the easiest thing with me. I am picky with my music.
What an interesting version of this song! The studio version was far from my fav Pumpkins song, but I like this version more. Only wish the mix was such that we could hear the vocals by James and D'arcy better (around 2:40).

This was one of those songs that had heavy studio production, and I admittedly didn't think it would sound as good live. I was dead wrong.
this is the first time i've heard a live version, and i think its better than the original
Even better live!
Completely agree. This was my first time hearing it live. I can’t imagine actually being there for it
The arrangement works, the old live SP habit of speeding up every song doesn't.
@@VuotoPneumaNN thats bc of the dose

Matthaios Kober imagine passing harsh judgement on something you’re yet to experience
D'Arcy's bass tone live was always killer
The late Mellon collie and Matt walker era is under appreciated. Also Darcy kills in this song. Best bass tone for the pumpkins by far
Even Billy said she had the best bass tone iirc.
Saw 2 Mellon Collie shows in 96 before Jimmy was fired. Then 3 with Matt in 97. They were literally the better shows with Matt

Is it bright where you are

And in your darkest hour
I hold secrets flame
We can watch the world devoured in it's pain
Delivered from the blast
The last of a line of lasts
The pale princess of a palace cracked
And now the kingdom comes
Crashing down undone
And I am a master of a nothing place
Of recoil and grace
Is it bright where you are
Have the people changed
Does it make you happy you're so strange
And in your darkest hour
I hold secrets flame
We can watch the world devoured in it's pain
Time has stopped before us
The sky cannot ignore us
No one can separate us
For we are all that is left
The echo bounces off me
The shadow lost beside me
There's no more need to pretend
Cause now I can begin again
Is it bright where you are
Have the people changed
Does it make you happy you're so strange
And in your darkest hour
I hold secrets flame
We can watch the world devoured in it's pain
