Let's talk! What are your ideas about play-based learning for young children? Do you have questions or comments about this video? Is there a topic you'd like to see covered by a future Apples Video Magazine? Let us know your thoughts!
Thank you for this comprehensive video on the importance of play in early childhood. I spend much of my time explaining to parents and sometimes colleagues and administrators, why play is actually a crucial element of a rigorous preschool program. I will certainly refer your video for those who want a more in-depth answer. You both have such a pleasant manner in front of the camera, making this video enjoyable to watch as well. A wise college professor of mine told us that we will spend most of our careers explaining to parents, colleagues, and administrators WHY we do what we do; so we should have a good grasp at answering those questions. She was right! So, thanks again for providing another resource to share.
This video was long but not boring and well done! It does a great job of explaining the research behind play-based learning, as well as the methodologies. Great job doing this in laymen's terms so that I can refer my parents (and administrators) to this information!
I teach 4 year olds. Most schools/ centers do have the space these videos have nor probably the staff. You can send newsletters and bulletin boards made beautiful with information and if not read it just looks attractive and informational. Most parents tell us over and over they did not see the information even though they pass right by it. Rather than continually trying to push play based learning on the teachers realize it takes parent evolvement also and maybe a course on what is expected of parents as co teachers of their child. Unless you have 3 or more teachers in a classroom most classes have children who need individualized attention as well as 1 of the 3 as a traveling teacher consistently around the room to see each area is running smoothly. Parent volunteers, good luck. Children need to play but they also need to focus and very few of ours can for more than 2 minutes.
Thank you for your feedback Janet Eades. I think many professionals share your concerns. Change can be a challenges. As a teacher I used play with 20 preschool children with a teacher aide because in most states licensing standards for preschool are 1 adult to 10 children--just as the sites presented in this video that also have two teachers. And play actually helped children focus for longer than two minutes. So I had great success with limited space and staff. But to your point teachers need courses on how to implement these ideas effectively. Play isn't perfect! It took a lot of trial and error for me to "get it right" in the classroom. I agree with you parent education is important also. thanks again for your comment. You bring up valid concerns.
Two dangerous activities are getting promoted through this sudden discovery of play. The modern educational paradigm is now out to kill the spontaneous nature of play and the last autonomous activity that children could do. My brother's son who has never been to school until he was 12 recently told me (when he was around 18) that if children know they are playing that is no longer play... For them, living is playing. Play as a separate activity is a modern invention. Children are playful and it is an inherent quality of being in the world. Playfulness is embedded in our biology. It is part and parcel of our beingness. So play as the quality has been turned into play as a fragmented and compartmentalized activity. Play is learning and play need not be used for teaching something else. If you closely observe what children do/make spontaneously (what in modern terminology is play) you will be able to decode how children are making sense of the world and how science is embedded in their activities and how qualities to learn- observation, exploration, creativity, imagination, reflection, abstraction, etc. I have around 4000 videos on spontaneous activities of children and have studied what they 'learn' and how children learn. Children in Bangalore slums speak 4 languages by they become 5 years old with no one teaching, no special effort to learn. Learning is not a choice. it the process of life. The unfortunate situation of modern humans is that they have never done research on HOW children LEARN and what is their natural content of learning. We are busy teaching them, helping them, controlling them with our superiority complex, undermining the life's process and them by infantilizing children for life. (We ourselves are probably infantilized due to us going through education) It is time we learn FROM children and not teach them as the educated are cognitively damaged because they have been learning the WORD (description) instead of the WORLD (experience) and their ability to create knowledge has been replaced with the ability to analyze. See the explorations we did at sadhana village school (re-imagining schools experiment), near Pune (school is closed now)
Good question!! many people confuse play and game. Of course yes, it sounds the same but some believe that the game is a part of play. game is planned activity while play embraces both planned and unplanned. You plan a game to shoot a ball maybe in the basket to be a winner or looser and you finally do more unplanned activities like movement of all direction , shouting , eye contact ,... which quite develop fine and gross motor skills, language, literacy and numeracy, imagination , creativity ,innovation ,problem solving, sociability and more others which change what was a game into complete fun play. Play is like two wings of butterfly , both must involuntarily move at the same time to make a flight happens. Play, create, evolve. Play is a foundation of brain and child development i believe in but still, i need more learning and research so that maybe my own kids and community can benefits for quality of education and better future of our young generation. More thanks for @Starnet Ealy Childhood and the Video editor.
