DEMOLITION OF THE YECLA DAM

- One of the actions implemented as part of the LIFE CIPRÍBER Project has been the complete removal of one of the largest transverse barriers impeding the passage of fish in the project area: the Yecla de Yeltes dam.
The Yecla de Yeltes dam was constructed in 1958 across the Huebra River, a tributary of the Yeltes River, to regulate annual water supply to the municipality of Vitigudino.
However, construction of new infrastructures and water supply pipes in the second half of the 20th century definitively resolved the supply of water to villages in the region, and the dam gradually fell into disuse.
Following removal of the Yecla dam and construction of fish ladders around obstacles, longitudinal connectivity was restored to 95% of the length of the Huebra River, permitting the passage of its migratory fish species, protecting an important part of the river’s historical heritage and ensuring that use of the river was compatible with the local economy.

In other words - you took down one big dam and put in a small dam with fish ladders. Fish ladders often dont work or fall into disrepair quickly, so what was the point?
You seem to be making an assumption that because fish ladders often don't work or fall into disrepair that this project of removing the Yecla River and establishment of the fish ladders would yield no net gain.
This video did not go into the aftermath of the dam removal and if in fact the weir and fish ladder improved the overall environment. A brief search did not answer this question. Fish ladders often do function as designed however.
And while a weir can be considered a type of dam it is smaller and is intended to make a river more navigable.
The EU has embarked on a dam removal program with an eye on not disrupted the environment by removal of dam as building the dams had done. This is a complex issue that has many positives and negatives. The Balkan region is on a dam building spree for example of the latter.
Here on the Klamath River was become a sewer killing every living thing in it.

Nice job guys! Although dams helped local economies at the time, many are now obsolete. We also didn't realize the environmental impact then.

@@jbbuzzable "No longer needed" is bit problematic as it is more like at the time was no longer needed. And as the drought and problems with power supply deepens across the Europe, I feel like removal of dams, especially those that can be modernized and put back in service, is terrible idea. They could have came with some regulated fish ladder that would be able to deal with variation of water level and as well add power plant. For example back in 50's 60's plenty of hydro power plants were shut down as coal/oil electricity was dirt cheap, today with soaring prices, their capacity and output are missing. As well their shit down had caused increased consumption of fossil fuels. Roughly 3000 t per MW of shut down capacity.
@@MrToradragon Fossil fuel plants are also shutting down as solar and wind are better alternatives. As grid storage increases, they will become become a thing of the past. It is already happening.

We have a lot of dying dams nobody wants even if they were brand new because they're on former industrial sites that are too costly to clean up before a new business location is allowed to be built there. Those former industrial areas were often built with entirely different transportation methods that are outmoded such as canal ships that were phased out for rail road. It's time we start demolishing these old sites left & right.
Think that the building that housed the pumping and electrical works. That couldof stayed and been reused as like a overlook of the former dam. Perhaps placing benches outside. made the area into a little park.
It would attract too many Dam Tourists and what do Dam Tourists do? Leave their Damn Dam Trash, everydamwhere and the Dam Fish choke to death, on the Dam Trash. It never ends.

They were limited to a lesser portion of the river, reducing overall population due to habitat loss. So "fine" as in "not extinct", but otherwise doing poorly compared to before the dam was built.

Although the nature aspects are understandable. However, Spain has a water problem, lacking of water. And just giving up a flood protection really makes no sense, loosing regulation options.
Northern Spain not have water problems. Water management is the real problem. Flood do not feed water necessity directly by the way.
A dam doesn't really provide flood protection, since it can't do anything about rainfall downstream and leaves nowhere for the water upstream to go except up and back. Should the dam fail, such as at Oroville and many others, the flood it unleashes downstream tends to dwarf anything it was supposed to "protect" against.

Who uses dynamite today? Maybe something like Semtex or C4, but certainly not dynamite.
Probably cheaper or less complicated to tear it down mechanically. It did only take 4 days after all.

While it's good they removed the dam. I have seen much better sites where they restore it back to natural.
This hardly comes close to how it would have looked before the dam was in place.
As long as the barriers have been removed for upstream and downstream migration is all that matters.
Eventually all the big dams will be gone, concrete and rebar don't last forever

Too bad they didn't isolate the caustic concrete dust and other debris from the water in the channel. Could have been a lot cleaner, lower impact, if they had used an AquaDam!

I saw one video where the entire dam was removed and pollution of the waters below the dam site was avoided, a whole lot of work.
The amazing part was after all the concrete was removed they shut off the pumps moving water around the work site and hours later the entire FULL reservoir was gone, the river completely restored to a natural state. The reservoir full of water washed the majority of the silt out as it drained. Earth coffer dams used to keep the work area free of water.
Why do you need a fish ladder if you are removing a dam. Does not make sense.

So that fish species can migrate properly, recover, and help repair damaged local ecosystems. And because dams are expensive to maintain, and dangerous not to maintain - even small ones.
any other modern country would keep the concrete waste out of the trim bed. ecological removal? nope. just a straight out urban demo job here. keeping cattle in the riparian stream bed zone. fish ladders are not a restoration project.

This video clearly showed that the river was still not in the natural state near the dam. There was still debris and sections of concrete which were not natural to the area. I also question the use of cattle along the river. We know cattle destroy riparian areas. This river will never be healthy until all dam debris and obstructions are removed along with the cattle.
In doing this please use clear diction and pronunciation! This must be a lazy persons take of other peoples videos!
