⚠️ Watch before buying the Milwaukee 8 meters STUD tape measure ⚠️

  • I went for this enormous indestructible version, and here's what I think about it. It's available there amzn.to/3UnKfWf
I already own a 5-meter tape measure, which is quite limiting for outdoor DIY when refurbishing a terrace.
Here are the negative or even unacceptable aspects of this Milwaukee product:
This Milwaukee tape measure has dual numbering. Each time, you can read the metric value and its equivalent in imperial value, meaning in inches. So, you have centimeters on one side of the tape and inches on the other.
This means you can only read your measurement on one side and not from the right or left when you need it.
The second flaw is that the tape, to remain rigid, is curved, so it doesn't lay flat on the ground to read a measurement. You always have to press it down. I'm talking about a space of 7 mm nonetheless.
Something much less acceptable is the marking on the tape itself indicating the millimeter value to add when measuring inside a box, for example. The tape indicates that it measures 92 mm long while I measure 94 mm. Even if we go outside, which is usually done during an interior measurement, we're at 96 mm, so each time you have an error of 4 mm, which is completely unbelievable to see such a marking.
There is a slot for a wrist strap, but the strap is not included with the tape measure.
On the positive side for the STUD version of this tape measure:
The distance marking is present on both sides of the tape. This can be handy in certain situations.
The magnet at the end of the tape almost allows you to retrieve an entire screwdriver because it's so powerful. Also, be aware that this means it will attract all the metal particles lying at the bottom of your toolbox.
The first 15 centimeters have a double transparent protective coating.
The belt clip is quite sturdy, and you won't lose it while climbing onto your roof.
There is a window under the reel that allows you to place your thumb there and thus slow down the rewinding. It's conveniently located and useful for avoiding cutting yourself by touching the edges.
There are perfect grip handles for a large hand with non-slip rubber everywhere.
It's red and highly visible, so it's easy to find in the grass on the ground.
Regarding points to consider before buying this Milwaukee STUD:
It weighs over 500 g because the tape is wide, and to maintain rigidity, it naturally adds extra weight.
The box states it can withstand a drop of 24 m and still function, which I highly doubt.
It's also indicated that it can remain straight without breaking up to 4 m, but after 3 m 20, I can assure you it really starts to show signs of weakness. The tape being naturally heavy, it becomes difficult to hold.
My conclusion on this construction tape measure:
I'm rather disappointed with my purchase; I won't return it for ecological reasons.
I'm not a professional working on a construction site taking 8-meter measurements every day, so I'll use it as is, but I'll be careful when purchasing a 5-meter one that won't be this model.
🎁 I simply used amzn.to/3GKIr2C to film this video in 4K. It shows, you don't need much to have fun.
