The Peace of Wild Things by Wendell Berry
When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Today was one of those days where I needed a Jake Runestad fix (they come around every so often ever since I had the privilege of performing The Peace of Wild Things many years ago). Anyway, I listened again to The Peace of Wild Things, A Silence Haunts Me, Please Stay and Let My Love Be Heard. As usual, I smiled and cried and felt settled deep in my soul.
When my grandmother past away, I couldn't cry. I was just in a state of shock-induced apathy that accepted it like it was some minor inconvenience. Then I put this song on a massive speaker, and I was finally capable of mourning my loss. I still think of her everytime I hear this song.
2022 georgia district 9 honor chorus. this reminds me of overcoming the hate i have experienced throughout my life due to my identity. my beautiful, unique being rests in the grace of the world and am free!!
You ARE beautiful, no matter what others or our culture try to say. Keep singing and shining!
Jake Runestad is a young brilliant composer. I hope he will compose more stuff like this.
This was one of my pieces for Virginia All-States this year! A difficult piece but still gorgeous! My choir also had the honor of speaking with Mr. Runestad over face time thanks to our Director!
It'sWaffleTime I was there also! That was such a fun moment!
Ahhh! Yes me too! I just always come back to this video and fall in love with it all over again.
I was there too! I came back to this piece to reminisce, it was one of my favorites
I find myself loving this piece more as time goes on. I performed this in high school a couple years ago and I don't know what else I can say other than I just plain love it. It sounds so wonderful and it's so well written.
i fricken love the end result of this song preforming it but it is the hardest song i’ve ever done but so worth putting so much work in
this poem touches my heart and the music is expansive and expressive... sensitive performance
great heron feeds makes me feel euphoric
I still remember the first time we hit that chord in my choir class and oh my god.
So Beautiful..as are the moving words of Wendell Berry... two wonderfully inspiring souls...
Powerful piece to perform! Thanks to Jake for featuring Baritone section...
part of our Earth Day concert in Colorado--beautiful
One if my favorite poems and a beautiful composition. Can I ask you Jake, were you in the Kantorei boychoir in Rockford, IL?
Simply amazing to listen to the words and embrace them as a singer.
Absolutely gorgeous.
Gorgeous!!
How can anyone give a thumbs down to this brilliant piece? My choir is currently doing it and what a rich experience all around.
