    Nettle nets
Stoneleigh, England (Reuters): Fancy being a trend setting fashion pioneer? Well fortune could favor those brave enough to embrace stinging nettles, hailed by some as an environmentally cuddly alternative to cotton. Once its notoriously irritating leaves are stripped away, researchers say the fibre from nettle stems is strong, long and perfect for fashion cloth, which has already found its way into some Italian fashion houses. "We can grow it in Britain, spin it in Britain and make good quality fashion clothes out of it," Melvyn Askew, head of agricultural strategy and development at the UK Central Science Laboratory, told Reuters. Collecting nettles as a source of fibre goes way back in history, with use cited in the last two world wars for producing textiles in addition to flax and hemp, as well as culinary applications such as soup or tea.
