STORYLINE:
Giving birth is dangerous business for Haiti's poor, who suffer the highest maternal mortality rate in the Western Hemisphere.
Some 630 of every 100-thousand women died of pregnancy-related causes in 2006 - more than five times the Latin American and Caribbean average, according to the United Nations.
The problem appears to be simple: millions of women either cannot access health care, or cannot afford it.
Haitian health officials made significant strides last year (2008) with a program to waive entrance fees - the equivalent of 25 to 64 cents a day - for pregnant mothers at public hospitals.
But the women must pay for almost everything else, from doctors' gloves and syringes to medicine, food and transportation.
The situation turned critical last year (2008) when Port-au-Prince's public hospitals went on strike during the fall peak birthing season - nine months after Carnival.
With mothers forced to turn to a handful of not-for-profits, the cramped, 66-bed Jude Anne maternity hospital run by Doctors Without Borders Holland in central Port-au-Prince became, in the words of obstetrician Dr. Wendy Lai, a "war zone."
Women were giving birth on the floor, in the waiting room, on staircases and in bathrooms, she said.
One died before doctors, caught up with other life-threatening emergencies, could attend to her.
Doctors Without Borders recently moved to a larger facility after two and a half years in a building so cramped, doctors could not walk around some patients' beds.
Conditions are still basic, with overcrowded delivery rooms filled with women in labour.
But the facility provides critical care for expectant mothers, many of whom face difficult births.
"We are trying to take women who are the most complicated pregnancies and deliver them safely," said Doctors Lai.
Some of the mothers sing to get through the pain.
Jean-Francoise Marie Lucet was one of the women who started to shout in the delivery room.
After just a few minutes of pushing and screaming, Lucet gave birth to a son who weighed a healthy 7.16 pounds.
The baby was her second - the first had died a year before after suddenly losing weight.
Because they are caused by pregnancy, the only cure for the disorders is to deliver the baby.

So touched and sad to see them like that...wish there is any fund to help to upgrade the facility in the maternity hospital....they deserve to have better service like other woman...cant stand to see newborn in wooden box like coffin😢

I do too I would never want to give birth in a third world country you might die the baby might die no prenatal care in America we are very lucky in some ways it's African American women we do not have to give birth in those conditions even if we are the lowest on the totem pole in the United States we can honestly say we do not have to give birth in these kind of conditions
Not all cultures have men present at the birth. It hasn't been so long in America as women used to get sedated and wake up with a baby.
In cases like this were the labor and delivery rooms have multiple women, the men are not allowed. Most third word countries offers free or very cheap healthcare and unfortunately this is what the situation looks like although some have better facilities , however there are private hospitals with state of the art facilities just like the USA, and like the USA it is very expensive, you need a very good health insurance coverage, not the ones you get from your employer .....or a few thousand USD. Still cheaper than the US. But these women just can not afford it.

I used to work for a lady Anna a man and they were missionaries and they would go to poor countries trying to teach the women birth control they would bring condoms to places like India and Africa and oh it's another is an Asian country and its really poor I can't think of the name of it but they didn't even have condoms over there it was just a sad sad thing and before I could go on a missions trip with them they ended up going to another country that I was afraid to go to but to me people in America and especially black people in America have no empathy and compassion for each other let alone their brothers and sisters that's abroad
Look up UNFPA it helps provide women around the world with family planning and providing contraception. A big part of it is to decrease the mortality rate of the women and babies. Obama supported it as have most democrats. George Bush and republican presidents including currently have not paid into because the use of abortion. Also not all countries have health insurance and medical bills including the UK and Canada.
We need to drop you in that rule area and let's see how long you survive I hate when black people put other poor black people down I mean you are in America you should have a better education and a better understanding of how the world works and even an American you're still not free you still that low on the totem pole black woman dark skin black woman so for you not to have any empathy and compassion for them that just shows me how clueless you truly are to your situation
