Building a table to hold my vise

  • Thank you for watching!
    The finished table is about 865lbs (390kg). With the vise it's about 1,025lb (465kg). The steel for the frame cost $235. The top was a scrap, cut from the center of a ring, and I don't remember the exact cost but I guess $400. The vise cost more than twice as much as the table, but both should last a few lifetimes.

    I've had the chance to use this table a couple of times now. It's fun to whip out in front of people:) I can see what people are talking about when they say the legs are delicate, but they're design to support a "mostly" vertical load, not be torqued from the side or pushed back into place. If you just let the table open or close on it's own and don't force anything, it works great th-cam.com/users/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh Once it's set up, it's pretty solid. My only gripe would probably be related to the clamps provided. They're not the highest quality. They do the job, so no big deal, but they could be better. All in all, pretty cool gadget.

      You buy once, you cut once, if it's worth doing then it's worth overdoing. Those are his credos. :) I mean, that wilton vice, will pay thrice it's price in two decades. Guaranteed. Already, mine, the next step down, if i wanted, i could sell it for just over twice the price of admission.

      I once purchased a set of Heavy duty sawhorses at a farm auction. Beam was a 10 x 10 H beam 3/8 web and legs were 4 x 4 x 1/4 angle they could have supported the front of the space shuttle if need be. Farmers never overbuild anything They just make it strong enough to hold anything they may be able to move with whatever they may own.

    Great build Jer, enjoy your videos a lot. If you have not come up with a way to move the table around yet, consider drill/tap a couple holes in the center and one in line and towards the vise for lifting eyes. Your floor hoist will straddle the legs and make it safe and easy to move around. If you don't want the holes left open you can insert allen head set screws in them until time to move again. Just a thought.

    • @aserta
      @aserta 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Usually you pour concrete inside. A heavy one where the aggregate is scrap metal. But if you really want to do it right, you go and buy lead and pour it inside. It's dead easy. You make sure one end is sealed and put as much lead scrap inside as you can fit, then, you heat up some lead (don't boil it) and pour on top. The lead inside will melt with the poured one and form a solid chunk. Saves time and minimizes the risk of vaporizing the lead, which is the only thing besides putting it in your mouth that you don't want to do.

    I've been trying to decide where to mount my vise for awhile, now, and thanks to this video I... still have no idea. But the design is great and the execution is even better. The combination of meticulousness where it pays off and the eyeballing where it doesn't... really good info. I tend to get paralyzed when building something this.... expensive and permanent.... trying to figure out how to not mess it up. You seem to always get it done properly start to finish.

    The best anchor you can use for mounting those big vices are big flywheels. We had 1 of those big Wilton vices in our shop mounted on a stand with a large diesel flywheel somewhere around 24 in. in diameter & 8 to 10 in. thick. It took quite a bit of force budge that thing. If you wanted even more weight then that you could also use the crankshaft instead of a big pipe.

    • @Jer_Schmidt

    I bought a used manual fork lift for 400Euros (500$). A bit stiff for stuff moving, but since there is no electronik or stuff, I can weld on it and don't have to worry about anything. If you don't want to spend money, a stack of pallets can do the job also (I used that method before the fork lift). My workbench weighs about 3/4 tons and it moves when I bend heavy stuff, so now I am thinking about a post vice ancored in concret to solve the issue.

    Machine grey paint on the legs, no paint on the top, just lots of oil and wire brushing when needed. That's what we use on our welding benches onboard our ships, and they hold up well that way. Nothing is worse than a painted top on a steel workbench. Paint will eventually chip under regular (ab)use, and those chips always wind up getting into everything.

    You do excellent work young man! My only suggestion for future metal topped tables is let the top be free floating by not welding it directly to the frame. I've built many large welding tables, some with 1" thick tops and welded pieces of threaded rod through the table with plates capturing the frame to allow for expansion and contraction. You'd be surprised how easily plates warp.

      I stressed over how to fasten the table down for longer than I’d like to admit. But this plate was bowed badly enough to begin with that I figured it wouldn’t get a lot worse if I welded it down. Good idea though, for sure if you have a flat plate to begin with.

      @@Jer_Schmidt I understand what you mean. With your table being the size that it is you shouldn't have any problem. Your work is excellent! Especially considering your age. Keep the videos coming .

    I think you should chain the vise oposite side of the table to the floor, just to avoid any inclination of it when pulling the lever

    Awesome (entertaining as well as informative) build video! I'm also happy you posted this, as I found an old Wilton swivel vise at work that I want to restore, ( I work in a recycling center). I don't know what model it is, but it weighs approx. 70 lbs. Now I'll definitely buy it!
