Belive it or not i learned how to fish like that as a kid here in the states with a beer can. Also those popsicle bags you are supposed to just cut the corner and suck on the corner lol.
Many expats are part of local communities, not just only hanging out with other expats. Many also do speak local languages half decently. We are traveling expats moving around all the time and we rarely hang out with other expats. That said, you are always an outsider… depending on the country. Locals have a hard time relating to expats and often vice versa

I guess unless you share the same values and lifestyle you'd never feel as family, especially in bloody Asia. This part of the world is nice tho you aren't treated like an alien if you integrate.
@@EllisWR well if you met us, we’d be the 4th and 5th because we always try to be like locals and we stay long enough to fit in even though we move on after a month or so. We shop at local market, seek out places to eat that look like locals are at, drink with locals and spend time with them often when they are done work to share life experiences. Perhaps we are different than the rest. There is no sense going to other cultures to not try to get involved or at least try and understand it and fit in as best possible.
I definitely agree with your point, Ellis, about the ex-pat enclaves. I'm a Brit and live in Monterrey, well Guadalupe, and I'm the only non-Mexican in my neighbourhood. You enjoy life a lot better when you are among Mexicans, enjoying the local market, taco stands and corner shops.

I love your humble attitude toward the gentrification going on in Mexico. I remember the older version of Mexico and my fear is that these expats are going to diminish the beauty of Mexican culture. I’ve seen many videos on YT of people who ONLY want a cheaper lifestyle, and MOAN about Mexico, its food and don’t integrate.

It is also most definitely despicable to move to a country, be ignorant and entitled, think you can treat people however you want as you have some money, not learn the language or integrate, live in a colony of your own kind excluded from reality, drive up prices for locals and push them out of their homes and businesses. The list goes on. If anybody disagrees with that then they can eff off. Respect is paramount in life.
As the classic saying goes...'fit in, or f off'... I also cant stand those who move countries for a 'better life' and then insist on changing that country to suit themselves...we have a handful of foreign politicians who do this here in New Zealand and it pisses me off no end lol
Much better to stay in a local area. I live in a small village in Thailand. I can go a month and not see a farang. Much nicer, chilling with the Thai people. Cheaper as well. lol. When I work in Angola I cut about with the locals. Cheaper as well lol.
